Locke should never be the smoke monster!
He was too mysterious and important to die the way he did, half way through the show.
If he was supposed to die, he would do it in the end, as an ultimate sacrifice to save the island.
He was the conductor in the Season 1 UK Promo, when everybody else is dancing, for crying out loud!

Charlie should be the smoke monster!
Why? He was found by Jack and Kate HANING FROM A PALM TREE for a while and simply got back up after some CPR maneuvers? No. He died and the smoke monster took his form.
After the incident, he didn't used drugs anymore, he killed Ethan, got more attatched to Claire and Aaron. Why? He would use the baby for something.
Maybe furhter up the story, the actual ghost of Charlie could be seen by Hurley and warn him.

Walt should've returned to the island, even after Michael's death.
They spent the first half of the series saying how much he was special, and then he simply disappears, back to school in NY and that's it.
Widmore should bring him back to the island, because he could be the only one to stop or contain the smoke monster.

Tom Friendly was another character that should've lived longer!
His back story was great! Friendly was gay?? I wanted to know more about that! Was he actually gay? Was he pretending? Too bad it was shown in a flashback after his death and it wasn't explored anymore.

Shannon was a shallow, naggy, useless, skinny bitch! Only when her character was begining to become interesting facing her brother's death and starting a relationship with Sayid, she dies!
Legend says that Maggie Grace asked to leave Lost to be in the 2005 version of The Fog. Hm... Everyone would win if she had chosen Lost.

Mr. Eko was also someone who could face fearlessly the smoke monster. He should be around for much longer than he actually did.

Bernard should be exactly as he was, only he should appear in more episodes.
One of the greatest moments of the series was when he, Sawyer and Sayid were in their abandoned beach camp waiting to ambush the Others and it all goes terribly wrong.

The exactly same thing I said about Bernard goes for Rose as well.
Rose was so sweet, a motherly figure for everyone there, specially Charlie I think. It would be a very dramatic moment when she found out that he was the smoke monster.

Nikki and Paulo's story line adds absolutely nothing to the main one.
Pure filler. Well done filler, but, still filler.
What could be done differently? Take away their story altogether. Give more space for development of other characters, like Locke, Sawyer, Ben, Desmond, Sayid, Eko, Widmore.

Rodrigo Santoro is a great actor, and makes me proud to have such a talented and charismatic Brazilian actor in Lost, but I must admit, he was a wasted character.
I only wish he mattered more to the main plot of the show.
Although, it was cool to see Billy Dee Williams' cameo in the episode that tells Nikki and Paulo's back story: Exposé.

Frogurt (or Neil) was funny. Sawyer liked to pick on him, he wasn't pleased by it.
He made me feel kinda sorry for him. No one liked him, not even Hurley. Then again, he wasn't a very likable character. Lots of space for comedy there.
His death scene was very cool! Extreme, painful and unexcpected.

The smoke monster wanted to leave the island all along! I don't think it was a good idea for the PILOT OF PLANE to be its first victim.

Captain Gault (the captain of the ship Widmore sent to the island in season 4) should have lived longer. He could be a major badass character.
Most people don't remember him, he appeared in only three episodes, but deserved much more. He had potential.

Needless to say that this list will have many spoilers, so see it, only if you have seen it already or you don't mind knowing stuff about the show. But I guess if someone didn't watched it yet, well, then you don't mind.
But I digress, back to the subject: Many people didn't liked the end of Lost. Personally, I did. The ending (and season 6 as a whole) pleased me. Yet, seasons 4 and 5 were a bit lost (no pun intended) in the whole mess of the writer's strike, the show was severely damaged by it.
Here's a few things I think should be different, some that shouldn't.
