Succession (2018)
And the Nominees are...

*Better Call Saul
*Euphoria
*Ozark
*Severance
*Squid Game
*Stranger Things
*Succession
*Yellowjackets

And the Emmy goes to...

**Succession**

This feels like it's coming down to Squid Game vs. Succession. The Netflix phenomenon was a pop-culture stalwart for, at least, three months last year, holding stronger than most of the streamer's series. It's won multiple accolades, including four major Creative Arts Emmys. It's never beaten Succession in a series matchup. HBO's hit won every major precursor (DGA, PGA, SAG, WGA), and lead the field with a whopping 25 nominations. It only won one Creative Arts Emmy, but it's casting win is one of the most predictive of a series winner in the field. Feels likely.

Power Rankings
1. Succession
2. Squid Game
3. Severance
4. Ozark
5. Better Call Saul
6. Euphroia
7. Stranger Things

And the Nominees are...

*Abbott Elementary
*Barry
*Curb Your Enthusiasm
*Hacks
*The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
*Only Murders in the Building
*Ted Lasso
*What We Do in the Shadows

And the Emmy goes to...

**Abbott Elementary**

I still think Ted Lasso could easily win this, and/or Hacks could swoop in and steal it, but Abbott Elementary has such momentum that it feels like it'll CODA it's way into a win. It's a big-hearted, lovable network comedy that has the underdog narrative on lock. Extremely close race, though.

Power Rankings
1. Abbott Elementary
2. Ted Lasso
3. Hacks

Surprised with it's overall nomination haul (20), including overwhelming support for it's actors. Won five Creative Arts Emmys, including Casting. Dopesick's the only show that's close, and it's not even that close.

Hacks (2021)
And the nominees are...

*Rachel Brosnahan- The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
*Quinta Brunson- Abbott Elementary
*Kaley Cuoco- The Flight Attendant
*Elle Fanning- The Great
*Issa Rae- Insecure
*Jean Smart- Hacks

And the Emmy goes to...

**Jean Smart- Hacks**

Brunson is tracking up, but I'm not sure that'll be enough to beat returning champ Smart in the role of her career, in the beloved Hacks That said, this is a category with a high rate of turnover. Outside of Julia Louis-Dreyfuss's six straight wins, nobody has won consecutively here since Patricia Heaton's wins in 2000 and 2001. If they go that route again, Brunson likely benefits.

Power Rankings
1. Smart
2. Brunson
3. Brosnahan

*Oscar Isaac- Scenes from a Marriage
*Michael Keaton- Dopesick
*Himesh Patel- Station Eleven
*Sebastian Stan- Pam & Tommy

And the Emmy goes to...

**Michael Keaton- Dopesick**

This one feels like Keaton's already won. He took all of the precursors, and his show is only one of two nominated for top prize (it would stun be if they went with Stan).

And the Nominees are...

*Jodie Comer- Killing Eve
*Laura Linney- Ozark
*Melanie Lynskey- Yellowjackets
*Sandra Oh- Killing Eve
*Reese Witherspoon- The Morning Show
*Zendaya- Euphoria

And the Emmy goes to...

**Zendaya- Euphoria**

Zendaya's probably winning her second. After a surprise win for the first season, Euphoria's stock has soared, scoring a drama series nod (it also won five creative art awards, tied for the most). She had a lot of big awards-baiting moments, and she'll likely be rewarded for it. Lysnskey's a real threat though, with Yellowjackets clearly touching a nerve with voters. It's a strong performance, and a way to reward a frequently overlooked talent. Linney, for her last shot at Ozark, has a shot as well.

Power Rankings
1. Zendaya

And the Nominees are...

*Donald Glover- Atlanta
*Bill Hader- Barry
*Nicholas Hoult- The Great
*Steve Martin- Only Murders in the Building
*Martin Short- Only Murders in the Building
*Jason Sudeikis- Ted Lasso

And the Emmy goes to...

**Jason Sudeikis- Ted Lasso**

It's Hader or Sudeikis. Martin and Short are strong, but I think they're both so strong that they split votes (though I'd give the tip to Martin's deadpan work). Glover, essentially, had an extended cameo in his own show. Hoult, a strong player, doesn't have a show with as much love overall (maybe next time). Hader won two straight before Barry's hiatus, and Sudeikis won last year. Both give strong performances that, weirdly, have less screen-time than previous seasons (Sudeikis's absences in his series second season were a bit more glaring). Either could win, but posterity typically wins out (this is a category that goes heavily for repeat winners), and I think voters will have an easier time going for the eternal nice guy Ted Lasso over the increasingly brutal Barry Berkman.

Power Rankings
1. Sudeikis
2. Hader
3. Martin

*Julia Garner- Inventing Anna
*Lily James- Pam & Tommy
*Sarah Paulson- Impeachment: American Crime Story
*Margaret Qualley- Maid
*Amanda Seyfried- The Dropout

And the Emmy goes to...

**Amanda Seyfried- The Dropout**

Seyfried is the safe bet here. Qualley scored all of the precursor nods, but Maid missed a pretty easy miniseries slot, unlike James and Garner. James has the physical transformation aspect and Garner is a multi-Emmy winning darling, but The Dropout scored more broadly with directing (two) and writing nominations. Maybe an upset, but she seems pretty solid.

And the Nominees are...

*Jason Bateman- Ozark
*Brian Cox- Succession
*Lee Jung-jae- Squid Game
*Bob Odenkirk- Better Call Saul
*Adam Scott- Severance
*Jeremy Strong- Succession

And the Emmy goes to...

**Bob Odenkirk- Better Call Saul**

Strong is the returning winner with another terrific showing and Jung-jae has a breakout, SAG winning role in phenomenon Squid Game. Both have great shots here, and are probably the favored picks (Jung-jae, specifically, seems the frontrunner), but I think the rapturous response to Odenkirk's work in Better Call Saul's final season will finally give him the push to win here. Maybe they wait until next year to reward him, but the series is hotter in voters minds. If the Emmys had take place a few months ago, then I'd probably tip towards Jung-jae, but Squid Game came out so long ago, and so many other series have genuine momentum, that I'm just not sure his work is as fresh. Strong has a similar problem, but I'm swayed more by the fact that his costar and co-nominee Brian Cox had stronger material to contend with than he did in the series' second season, and Strong had less. It's a very close race, but I think Odenkirk finally has it.

Power Rankings
1. Odenkirk

*Julia Garner- Ozark
*HoYeon Jung- Squid Game
*Christina Ricci- Yellowjackets
*Rhea Seehorn- Better Call Saul
*J. Smith-Cameron- Succession
*Sarah Snook- Succession
*Sydney Sweeney- Euphoria

And the Emmy goes to...

**Julia Garner- Ozark**

Probably Garner. She's won twice before, in categories just as strong as this, and this will be the last time to recognize her for her career-making work in Ozark. There's a coolness to the series this time though, despite several nominations. Snook would, likely, be the spoiler (even if she should go over to lead), but watch out for SAG winner Jung or Seehorn, with some heat for the ending series. I'd even wager Sweeney has a decent shot (she's got two nominations this year). Could be fun.

Vote-splitting could be an issue (which would benefit Rogen, Pam & Tommy's only nominee), but I think Bartlett is the clear Lotus standout, having scored nominations everywhere else (including SAG). Probably his to lose.

*Sheryl Lee Ralph- Abbott Elementary
*Juno Temple- Ted Lasso
*Hannah Waddingham- Ted Lasso

And the Emmy goes to...

**Hannah Waddingham- Ted Lasso**

I can't make heads or tails. James or Waddingham? James is coming in very hot, but this category goes heavily for repeat winners here. With that in mind I'll take Waddingham, for posterity and the possibility that James's costar Ralph could siphon votes. Waddingham's got costars nominated, but she's the clear favorite, whereas I think Ralph's been around so long, and is so good on the show, that it'll split support.

*Matthew Macfadyen- Succession
*John Turturro- Severance
*Christopher Walken- Severance
*Oh Yeong-su- Squid Game

And the Emmy goes to...

**Kieran Culkin- Succession**

There's a lot of vote-splitting potential here, for everyone but Crudup. This, likely, scored him his first win for The Morning Show's first season two years ago. His series lost a lot of momentum this time out though, where as Succession is the hottest show here. Culkin and Macfadyen are both strong, and could split, but it feels like support has firmed around Culkin, scoring precursor nominations everywhere important (including SAG). Crudup did, too, but, as mention, Succession's got the heat.

**Jennifer Coolidge- The White Lotus**

There's a big potential for vote-splitting here, but Coolidge is so far in front of her costars that I don't think she'll have trouble standing out. If the five Lotus women split, look for Dever's painful work in Dopesick to slide in.

*Tyler James Williams- Abbott Elementary
*Henry Winkler- Barry
*Bowen Yang- Saturday Night Live

And the Emmy goes to...

**Brett Goldstein- Ted Lasso**

Despite uncertainty in other places, Lasso should prevail here. Goldstein's been a breakout for the series, with his Roy Kent proving a consistent force in the show's wobbly second season. That, aided by the appearance of no clear spoiler (I'd go with one of the Barry guys, but I'd wager they're splitting votes) and the Apple hit still having fans (20 noms is a lot) lead me to believe in this category's first repeat winner since 2008.

Severance (2022)
And the nominees are...

*Jason Bateman- Ozark ("A Hard Way to Go")
*Hwang Dong-hyuk- Squid Game ("Red Light, Green Light")
*Karyn Kusama- Yellowjackets ("Pilot")
*Mark Mylod- Succession ("All the Bells Say")
*Lorene Scafaria- Succession ("Too Much Birthday")
*Ben Stiller- Severance ("The We We Are")
*Cathy Yan- Succession ("The Disruption")

And the Emmy goes to...

**Ben Stiller- Severance**

Succession has, likely, cancelled itself out. While dual-nomination series have a pretty solid history here, more than two is something of a death sentence; NYPD Blue in 1994 (where it took four nominations), Hill Street Blues in 1981 and 1984, Lou Grant in 1980 and Roots in 1977 are the only positive examples. If one of them were to pull it off, it'd probably be Mylod's "All the Bells Say", the finale and DGA winner. This one is, likely, coming down to Dong-hyuk vs. Stiller, and I'm giving the edge to the once and possibly future Zoolander. Dong-hyuk directed the entirety of Squid Game, which has been a real boon for Emmy-nominated directors lately. This category isn't as kind to series-long directors though, as Dong-hyuk would be the first to win here. First-season series rarely win, too, but the ones that do (Boardwalk Empire, The Handmaid's Tale, House of Cards, Lost, True Detective, etc.) all set a distinct, singular tone. Severance's cold, slow-burn intensity is the most unique in the field (though Kusama's "Pilot" also has this). I think this'll win out.

Power Rankings
1. "The We We Are"
2. "Red Light, Green Light"

*Mary Lou Belli- The Ms. Pat Show ("Baby Daddy Groundhog Day")
*Cherien Dabis- Only Murders in the Building ("The Boy from 6B")
*MJ Delaney- Ted Lasso ("No Weddings and a Funeral")
*Bill Hader- Barry ("710N")
*Hiro Murai- Atlanta ("New Jazz")

And the Emmy goes to...

**Bill Hader- Barry**

I think it's Hader's, but I've been wrong before. "710N" is another filmmaking achievement, in a season full of them (Hader directed five of the eight episodes). Barry just doesn't have the heat that the others do though, so it's possible that he'll be passed over again. Only Murders snagged two nominations, which has been a curse for series here for the past 10 year (no series with multiple nominees has won this category since 2012, and only twice in the past 20). That said, "The Boy from 6B" is a distinct achievement (no dialogue) that it could steal Hader's thunder. Returning winner Aniello could, also, reap the love for Hacks to score another. Hell, Ted Lasso could even surprise, now that it only has one nominee (it had three last year). Hader feels the strongest, but not a lock.

*Yellowjackets ("F Sharp")- Jonathan Lisco, Ashley Lyle & Bart Nickerson
*Yellowjackets ("Pilot")- Ashley Lyle & Bart Nickerson

And the Emmy goes to...

**Jesse Armstrong- Succession**

He's got stronger competition than last time, but I expect Armstrong to win his third straight. Succession's still THE show here, and his bitter and bruising screenplays are key to that. Erickson's got a strong shot, as Severance is an original and unique vision with layers upon layers. I just wonder if more voters are going to view the Apple hit as more of a directorial achievement than a writer's. Same for Squid Game, which is more more of a visceral viewing experience than a storytelling powerhouse. "Plan and Execution" could get a boost from Saul's goodbye love, but I think he'll have to wait until next year for a last shot.

I think this'll be Brunson's consolation prize. Smart's just so strong in Lead Actress that it's a tall order to call an upset there. Hacks is pretty damn strong here, too, having won last year, and continuing to rack up a huge nomination haul. I just think that voters might not think that Abbott will score anywhere else, but still want to give the creator/star some respect. It's very tight though.
