Julia Stiles: Being that I did Julia's glam for the Emmy's, I'm partial. Makeup Expert Brett Freedman Says: Classic Hollywood w/a touch of edge. Get the look: Smokey, pewter eye shadow: MAC Sketch w/Idol Eyes applied w/damp brush over top.

Makeup Expert Brett Freedman Says: Jayma Mays: A pop of color on the lips done right. Great shade matched with a sleek liquid liner framing a crisp lash line. Get the look: Maybelline's Fifth Avenue Fuchsia. Shiseido Automatic Pen Liner in Black.

Makeup Expert Brett Freedman Says: So fun of her to sport a sheer and natural make up look. So unusual for a Hollywood blonde. Loved how she wore multi-colored nails. Very young, fun and total self expressive. Get the look: This one's easy...go in your nail polish drawer and mix up some fun!

Makeup Expert Brett Freedman Says: Love the soft lift of color to her skin. Tawny but not tan. Get the look: Vanitymark's Summerskin body bronzer. Elizabeth Arden's loose bronzing powder. Both have a touch of pink for the most natural finish.

Makeup Expert Brett Freedman Says: I'm a huge fan of body bronzer but Miss Jane looks a little too baked. The effect is striking...but feels a little 8 years ago. JLo circa 2003.

Makeup Expert Brett Freedman Says: Big fan of her crisp neutral eye with a hint of bronze and lashes for days. Smudged powder shadow with a cream-like texture: Get the look: Clinique quad in Teddy Bear.

Makeup Expert Brett Freedman Says: Gorgeous dewy skin with a classic arched brow and bold red lip. Get the look: Revlon lipstick in Fire and Ice. Vanitymark brow pencil in Dark Choco.

Makeup Expert Brett Freedman Says: So glad she did something other than the over the top glam thing. Love the unique mango lip color matched with the bronzed, smokey eye. Get the look: Lancome lipstick in Coral Ribbon.

Makeup Expert Brett Freedman Says: Bronzy plum is one of my favorite combos. Martha played up her eyes and gave her lips and cheeks a subtle wine glow. Get the look: Lipliner in Plumberry and lipstick in Amaretto. Both by Laura Mercier.

Everyone always pines over the dresses and fashion of the Emmys, but when you think about it, it’s the natural beauty of the actresses that can make or break a look. What’s the point of a killer couture gown if your face isn’t equally done up? Well, that’s why we have enlisted makeup expert and Vanitymark creator Brett Freedman to take a look back at the 2011 Emmys and pick his favorites and not-so-favorites.
There was a lot of understated elegance this year, and Brett took a liking to some of the subtle looks that television’s leading ladies took. From Julia Stiles to Kate Winslet, the makeup was on point and looking fabulous. As for the two starlets who made Brett’s worst list — or as he said to us, “stinkers” — there’s always next year to mount a major comeback in the makeup category!
