Relationships

Billy Fordham — Buffy developed a crush on Ford in the fifth grade, but he was a "manly sixth-grader" who had no time for younger girls. They became friends at Hemery High, where Ford secretly discovered that Buffy was the Slayer. In 1998, he showed up in Sunnydale and told Buffy that his father had been transferred and that he would be attending the local high school. In fact, Ford had months to live and was there only to find a vampire leader to arrange a deal: the blood of Buffy and his followers in exchange for eternal life. Buffy was devastated by Ford's betrayal, though moved by his cancer. When he rose as a vampire, she staked him without reaction; the Ford she knew and loved had already died

Oliver Pike — Pike was Buffy's main romantic interest before arriving in Sunnydale. Classmates at Hemery High, they initially hated each other as Buffy's superficial valley girl perspective was at odds with Pike's working class ethics. However, after both losing friends to Lothos, the two grew closer and Pike aided Buffy in killing the vampire king and burning down the school gym full of his minions. Following Buffy's expulsion from Hemery, she and Pike spent time together in Las Vegas, but eventually broke up as Buffy moved to Sunnydale without him. Buffy later told Willow and Xander that she no longer kept in touch with Pike

Angel — Angel initially loves Buffy from afar, watching her as she is called to her destiny as the Slayer; this experience inspires him to move to Sunnydale and become a useful ally in the fight against evil. Buffy loses her virginity to Angel (in the episode "Surprise"), an experience which triggers the loss of his soul. As Angelus, he attempts to destroy her life, as well as the world, until his re-ensoulment; because of his actions, Buffy is forced to send him to a hell dimension to save the world. When Angel returns, Buffy takes care of him and they try to be friends, but they continue to be drawn to each other. Angel eventually moves to Los Angeles to give Buffy a chance at a more normal life, although they keep in contact. Sparks again fly when Angel comes into contact with demon blood that makes him human again; however, Angel decides that he cannot abandon his fight against evil and prevails upon the powers that be to rewind time, leaving Buffy with no memory of their recent happiness together and restoring him to his vampire form. In the Buffy series finale, Buffy admits to Angel that she does still look into the future and leaves him with hope that they can be together at some point in that future. However, Buffy apparently loses trust in Angel after he takes control of Wolfram & Hart. Angel and Spike seek her out in Italy, but never catch up to her. When Angel meets her again after his identity as Twilight is exposed- during which he explains that his actions as Twilight were a ruse to allow him to coordinate and limit the damage that the anti-Slayer organisations would otherwise cause-, he implies that there is a reason for their feelings for each other, stating that they have such a connection that they will never be able to be happy with anyone else.

Scott Hope — A fellow Sunnydale High student who had a crush on Buffy. Scott asks Buffy out several times during Season 3. Although Buffy is interested in Scott, she is still overwhelmed by her heartbreak over Angel and repeatedly turns him down. Eventually, Buffy decides to date Scott ("Faith, Hope & Trick"), but Angel's return from Hell distracts her. Buffy and Scott are only together a few weeks; Scott breaks up with her because he is tired with dealing with her ongoing preoccupations. Years later, Buffy learns that Scott had told classmates that they had broken up because she was a lesbian, and has ironically come out as gay himself in college.

Parker Abrams — An attractive, older student whom Buffy met in college. Parker was the second person Buffy had sex with. However, he was only interested in having "a good time" and, not wanting a romantic commitment, ignored Buffy after they slept together ("The Harsh Light of Day"). Buffy is devastated by his behavior, and maintains a brief hope that they can reconcile. While under the influence of enchanted beer, Buffy saves Parker's life when he is trapped in a burning building. In the aftermath of the rescue, Parker apologizes to Buffy for his actions, and she responds by bashing him on the head with a wooden club.

Riley Finn — Buffy's main love interest for Season 4 and part of Season 5. Buffy met Riley when she started at college in the episode "The Freshman". They begin a serious relationship after discovering each others' demon-fighting secret identities. Riley sacrifices his career and friends to be with Buffy, but is continually disappointed by her unwillingness to be truly open and vulnerable with him. Also Riley felt that he wasn't strong or aggressive enough to satisfy Buffy the way that dangerous vampires did. He begins drifting away, and Buffy is repulsed to discover that he has been visiting vampire prostitutes and allowing them to drink his blood to get a rush from the intoxication of the blood loss. Although Buffy ultimately tries to stop him, Riley rejoins the military, where he is able to continue demon slaying, and leaves the country, returning to Sunnydale only briefly to track down a dangerous demon, with his new wife.

Spike — Spike and Buffy become reluctant allies. Spike falls in love with Buffy in Season Five; she does not return his feelings, and is unsettled to discover his growing obsession. Buffy is moved when Spike withstands significant torture to protect her and her sister, and they reconcile and fight side-by-side until her death. After her resurrection in Season Six, Buffy begins a violent sexual relationship with Spike. She breaks things off, admitting that she is only using Spike and the relationship is "killing her". Spike later attempts to rape an injured and weakened Buffy (she fights him off), and then leaves town in search of his soul. Spike's loyalty to Buffy continues after his ensoulment, and she eventually tells Spike she loves him (in the episode "Chosen") as he is about to sacrifice himself to save the world (to which Spike replies: "No, you don't. But thanks for saying it."). Spike chooses not to contact Buffy after he is resurrected in L.A., wanting her to remember him as a self-sacrificing hero; however, as revealed when they reunite in "Last Gleaming," Buffy had known all along that Spike was still "alive," but merely could not find the time to get in contact with him. Though she still has feelings for Spike, she does not act on them.

Satsu — As Buffy trained newly activated Slayers, a young girl named Satsu became her closest ally. Satsu fell in love with Buffy; when Amy Madison put Buffy in the influence of a sleep spell, which could only be broken by the kiss of true love, it was Satsu who awakened Buffy from her mystical sleep. Realizing this, Buffy talked to Satsu, telling her that she was flattered to know she felt that way about her, but was not gay herself. Despite this, Buffy ended up having sex with Satsu, in a moment she described as a "wonderful night" but claimed would go no further. However, Buffy did spend a second night with Satsu as a "goodbye."

Notable Powers
In addition to the common powers and vulnerabilities of vampires, Spike possesses many qualities unique to himself:

■Advanced age gives him physical abilities superior to most other vampires and demons.
■Highly skilled in both armed and unarmed combat.
■Capable of operating a wide variety of vehicles.
■Fluency in several languages (such as Latin, Uganda, and the Fyarl demon language).
■Temporarily had the ability to phase through solid objects as a ghost.

Relationships

■Drusilla- Drusilla is Spike's main love interest. His main motivation is to help her recover from an illness that leaves her bedridden. However, Drusilla begins to cheat on him with Angelus while he is stuck in a wheelchair, prompting him to betray Angelus and escape Sunnydale with Drusilla against her will. Drusilla cheats on him with a chaos demon, prompting Spike to return to Sunnydale to create a love potion. He later changes his mind and decides that torturing her will win her back, though this too fails. After Spike gets the chip in his head, Drusilla returns to Sunnydale in hopes of reforming their "family". However, finding that Spike is obsessed with Buffy, she gives up on him and leaves. They are briefly reunited when Drusilla works with demon hunter John in his warped belief that Spike has his soul, Spike briefly transferring his soul to Drusilla to protect it before he takes it back as he recognises that her mental state cannot cope with the guilt that his soul is causing her.

■Harmony Kendall- After becoming a vampire, Harmony begins a relationship with Spike. However, he sees her more as a sexual plaything and a nuisance than a true girlfriend. He is willing to stab her with a wooden stake to test the Gem of Amarra. They break up when Spike is captured by the Initiative and begin an on-and-off-again relationship which finally ends when Harmony is scared off by Spike's obsession with Buffy. The two are reunited at Wolfram and Hart where they have a brief but disastrous fling and again break up. Later on, they are able to have a civil, humorously heart-to-heart conversation in which Spike alleviates some of Harmony's insecurities (Harm's Way) though their sexual relationship is never rekindled.

■Buffy Summers- Spike's interest in Buffy begins as a one-sided, stalker-like obsession, and Buffy cuts him out of her life and alienates him from the Scoobies when she discovers his feelings. However, Buffy is moved when he endures torture at the hands of Glory to protect Dawn's identity of the Key, and accepts him back into the fold. Their relationship evolves after Buffy is ripped out of Heaven and begins a reluctant sexual relationship with him. Ashamed, Buffy makes several failed attempts to end their relationship before finally revealing it to her friends. When she finally manages to say no to Spike, he makes an aborted attempt to rape her. Ashamed, he leaves Sunnydale and undergoes several dangerous trials to restore his soul, earning Buffy's trust. As Spike prepares to sacrifice himself to close the Hellmouth, Buffy says that he loves him, but he says she doesn't and thanks her for saying it. He subsequently declined to tell her about his survival and return to life in Los Angeles as he felt that it would cheapen his sacrifice (Although she found out on her own anyway), and has since apparently moved past the more intense feelings aroused by her presence.

Quote
Angel: "What is your problem?"

Spike: "You are, you ponce! You're my problem. You got it too good! You're king of a thirty-floor castle, with all the cars, comfort, power, and glory you could ever want. Here I save the world, throw myself onto the proverbial hand grenade for love, honor, and all the right reasons, and what do I get? Bloody well toasted and ghosted is what I get, isn't it? It's not fair!"

Angel: "Fair?! You asked for a soul, I didn't! It almost killed me. I spent a hundred years trying to come to terms with infinite remorse. You spent three weeks moaning in a basement, and then you were fine! What's fair about that?!"

Relationships

Jenny Calendar — A computer science teacher at Sunnydale High, Jenny was a techno-pagan. Giles saw her at first as a symbol of the encroachment of sterile technology into the organic world of books, but they grew closer after cooperating to defeat the demon Moloch in the episode "I, Robot... You, Jane." When Angel lost his soul in the second season, Jenny was found to be part of the Gypsy clan who had cursed him with a human soul in 1898. She had been sent to Sunnydale to keep an eye on him, not knowing about the loophole in the curse that cost Angel his soul. Angry at not being told the truth, Giles initially joined Buffy in ostracizing Jenny. They eventually reconciled, but Jenny was soon murdered by Angelus in the episode "Passion," devastating Giles. He admitted to Buffy that Jenny was the first person he ever had to bury that he loved. Her death causes Giles and the rest of the Scoobies to distrust Angel when he is re-ensouled.

Joyce Summers — As Sunnydale's adult population came under the influence of magical chocolate in the episode "Band Candy," Giles reverted to his rebellious teenage persona, Ripper. He got intimate with Joyce Summers twice, including once on the hood of a police car. They were too embarrassed afterward to be romantically involved again.

Olivia — Whilst unemployed during Season Four, Giles saw this "old friend," a black English woman with whom he seemed to share a casual, albeit sexual, on-again off-again relationship. Olivia seemingly met him during his Ripper era, the 1970s, as he had once claimed to her that he had been a founding member of Pink Floyd, as well as being into the occult. She was last seen in reality in the episode "Hush ." Olivia is seen once more in a dream state in the episode "Restless," in which she appears pregnant as she and Giles take Buffy to the "demon carnival."

■Skilled at translation of foreign languages, notably Sumerian and Turkish.
■Temporary mystical transformations: formerly a giant, a centaur, and a living porcelain doll with inherent physical traits; strength as giant was disproportionate to her size

Relationships

Xander Harris — Dawn harbors a crush on Xander into her adolescence, feeling that he is the only one who treats her like an adult. Xander is both well-aware of and very flattered by her crush, exhibiting notable jealousy when Buffy informs him that she has moved on to Spike. Although she eventually outgrows her romantic feelings for him, Dawn and Xander remain extremely close, bonding over the fact that neither has any real "superpowers" ("Potential"). Xander surprises himself and is shocked that he unknowingly found Dawn attractive when dancing at the Bronze ("Him"). As a young adult undergoing a series of mystical transformations, Xander is Dawn's only real confidante between Willow's absence and with Buffy's global Slayer duties. Throughout, he is there to comfort her and allay her insecurities. By the time she is a human again, and despite the possibility of romantic interest from Buffy, Xander and Dawn kiss ("Retreat").

Kenny — Dawn dated this boy for some time, although Buffy, Leah and Giles warned her that he was a "Thricewise". He apparently disappeared after Dawn became a giantess, which Buffy believes to be a side-effect of losing her virginity ("The Long Way Home").

Relationships

Willow Rosenberg — After a brief romantic involvement in elementary school, Xander and Willow were best friends for years. Xander shared a moment of tenderness with Willow during the boring summer of 1997, which was ended by Buffy's return. In the show's third season, Xander and Willow began a secret romance while he was dating Cordelia and she was dating Oz. This ended when Cordelia and Oz rescued Xander and Willow, who had been kidnapped by Spike, and discovered them kissing. However, at some level, Xander retains deep feelings for Willow - these feelings are what he reaches out to in order to turn Dark Willow from her path of destroying the world, simply by refusing to leave as she commands him and bringing up all the incidents in their life they had shared and the friendship between them.

Buffy Summers — Seeing her on her first day at Sunnydale High caused Xander to crash into a railing, literally falling head over heels. Buffy, however, saw Xander only as a friend, and over time, they became surrogate siblings (the only exception to this was in the episode "Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered",
Xander's love for Buffy turned a strong friendship.
Added by SinceWeChangedTheWorldsee below). In issue two of Buffy Season 8, Buffy dreamt of them being in a relationship, a dream in which Buffy attempted a more than platonic kiss (which resulted in Xander's still talking head popping off his shoulders), and it is implied that they have slept in the same bed.

Cordelia Chase — Cordelia and Xander met as children and were antagonistic from the beginning, making their romantic relationship in high school all the more bewildering. They faced several obstacles, including peer pressure from Cordelia's clique (she was ostracized from her social circle), Cordelia's self-involved and insensitive manner, and Xander's unresolved attraction to Willow, Buffy, and Faith. When Cordelia discovered Xander and Willow kissing in the basement of an abandoned factory (where they were being held prisoner), she ended their relationship for good. By the end of Season Three, they had settled into a hesitant friendship (for example, Xander bought her a prom dress after he discovered that her family had lost its wealth). After graduation, their lives took different paths; he remained in Sunnydale and fought evil with Buffy, and she moved to Los Angeles to become an actress and later to "help the helpless" with Angel.

Faith Lehane — Some weeks after his relationship with Cordelia dissolved, Xander found himself helping Faith fight a demon one night in the episode "The Zeppo." After the battle, an adrenaline-fueled Faith took Xander back to her apartment and had sex with him; this was Xander's first sexual encounter. Weeks later, after Faith had gone rogue and killed a man, Xander confronted her about her actions. Faith started to rape Xander and then to strangle him before being hit in the head with a baseball bat by Angel. Faith mentions that she never wanted a relationship like Xander thought that she did, and was merely with him for the sex. During Season 7 of Buffy, when some Potential Slayers complained about Anya mentioning her sex-life with Xander, Faith said that whenever she hears Anya talking about sex, she reminds Anya that she was Xander's first, which makes Anya shut up.

Anya Jenkins — Xander's most long-term relationship, despite such problems as Anya's total disregard for normal social conventions such as not talking about sex in public. Despite this, however, the two fell deeply in love, coming very close to getting married, and retained strong feelings for each other. The two officially remained broken up, but once Xander lost his eye, Anya began to care for him more. The two became swept up in the moment when overhearing Willow and Kennedy, and Principal Wood and Faith, respectively, having sex. Before going into the final battle, Anya and Xander wished each other luck. Anya fought alongside Andrew, but she was killed by a Bringer. As the school was crumbling, Xander frantically called out Anya's name, but didn't notice her body lying on the floor. When Xander asked Andrew what happened to Anya, he was told that she died protecting Andrew, to which Xander replies 'That's my girl, always doing the stupid thing.'.

Renee — Renee was a young Slayer who had a crush on Xander. Directly before the attack by Amy's
Added by Areggie45army of the undead, she and another Slayer were talking about Renee's feelings for him, which she denied. Later, she and Xander joked with each other and he comforted her about feeling like she was doing a poor job as a Slayer. The pair traveled together to Dracula's castle and then to Japan to help Buffy get The Scythe back. Before they departed for The Scythe rescue mission, they shared a kiss and she asked Xander on a date. During the mission, however, Renee was killed by Toru, leader of the Tokyo vampires. After the mission, Xander spread her ashes on a Japanese garden.

■Vengeance demon form granted her superhuman strength, some form of invulnerability, telekinesis, teleportation, regenerative powers, the ability to assume human shape, the power to grant wishes, the psychic ability to "hear" the "cry of vengeance" of wronged women and sense the presence of souls, and the capacity to manipulate reality.

Relationships

Xander Harris — Anya returned to Sunnydale several months later, still infatuated with Xander. She persuaded him to sleep with her in the hopes of getting him out of her system, but it didn't work and instead they began dating. Xander invited her to a Halloween party and she decided to wear a bunny suit as her scary costume. When the demon Gachnar attacked the party, Anya saved Xander and his friends by going to Giles for help. Worried that Xander did not really care about her, Anya was moved when he mistakenly believed that she had been killed by Spike and proceeded to beat the vampire up. The couple began to argue over where their relationship was going, but when a party they were attending was attacked by a poltergeist, Anya risked her life and braved painful injuries to rescue Xander from being drowned. Anya's lack of social skills soon made her unpopular with the rest of the Scooby Gang, particularly Willow, who had little trust for the ex-demon. However, she continued to help them for Xander's sake, and was eventually accepted as an official member. Anya supported Xander during the brief period when Spike's manipulations created a rift between the Scoobies. Soon after Giles took over The Magic Box, a local occult store, Anya was hired as an employee because of her talent at finances. When Giles briefly left Sunnydale, he reluctantly left Anya in charge of the shop. During an argument, she and Willow accidentally released Olaf the troll from a crystal. It was revealed that Willow and Anya's mutual dislike stemmed from the fear of each that the other would hurt Xander. When Xander protected both women equally from Olaf, they finally came to an understanding and worked together to banish Olaf to the Land of the Trolls. As the Scoobies prepared to confront the hellgod Glorificus, Anya provided crucial advice by suggesting that they use the Dagon Sphere and Olaf's hammer in the fight[13]. During the battle with Glory, Anya heroically saved Xander from falling rubble and was knocked unconscious, while Buffy sacrificed her life saving Dawn and the world from a dimensional rift; Anya later played a part in the spell to resurrect her.

Relationships
Xander Harris — Willow "dated" Xander when they were five, until he stole her Barbie. She continued a hopeless, unrequited crush on her lifelong friend into high school. Her moment of tenderness with Xander ended when Buffy reappeared after having been gone all summer. Willow and Xander begin a brief affair though they were each involved with someone else. Willow's bisexual vampire alter-ego also had a long-lasting relationship with her universe's Xander after each of them were turned into vampires. She wrote angst filled love poems about Xander as a teen, but when she mentioned them, she politely told Xander, "Over you sweetie." Willow reminisced upon having found Xander very attractive during her teen years. Ultimately, even though the two of them were not in love, they do have a great deal of love for each other; this fact saved the world when Xander pointed this out repeatedly and stopped Willow from ending the world.

Daniel Osbourne — Willow dated Oz, a guitar playing-werewolf for almost two years, losing her virginity in the process. However, their relationship ended when she learned of his affair with Veruca, a female werewolf. After Oz killed Veruca to save Willow from her, he left to try to find a way to control his lycanthropy.[11] When he returned to Sunnydale months later hoping for a reconciliation, Willow had begun her relationship with Tara. However, her feelings for Oz had remained strong, and she told him, "I feel like some part of me will always be waiting for you."

Tara Maclay — Willow's first lesbian relationship initially started as a friendship but quickly developed into something more. Willow met Tara in a Wicca group during college, and began a relationship which eventually became sexual. They were portrayed as each others' "soul mates". People outside the main group of Scoobies, such as Spike, Faith and a recently returned Oz, would recognize the relationship and Willow's lesbianism almost immediately after meeting Tara, whereas close friends Willow spent most of her time with, such as Xander and Buffy, remained utterly oblivious until Willow accidentally came out to them. Tara briefly left Willow because of her inappropriate use of magic to erase part of Tara's memory, but they soon got back together just in time for Tara's shocking death.

Kennedy — Willow continued her recovery from Tara's death as she embarked on a relationship with this Potential Slayer. Andrew stated that Kennedy and Willow were living together in South America. Following her month-long mystical death, they decided to take things slow but broke up after the destruction of the Seed of Wonder. Due to the End of Magic, Willow was without her abilities and came to the conclusion that Kennedy was mainly interested in her because of her powers and felt that her skill with computers didn't "do it" for Kennedy. During the same conversation with Buffy, Willow also stated that she was in love with someone else and that it was someone she will never see again. This could be a reference to Aluwyn or even Tara as she did not name the individual.

Aluwyn - Willow first met Aluwyn when she arrived to the spirit world to look for a guide to help her control her powers. On their first meeting, Aluwyn told Willow that she was her guide and that she would help her better control the power that dwelled within her; however, Willow quickly learned that Aluwyn was not her guide and the other goddess had appeared and told Aluwyn to leave Willow alone. With Aluwyn gone, the other goddess offered Willow to have Tara be her guide on her journey toward improving her understanding of her powers. However, Willow surmised this would either be robbing Tara of her afterlife or an illusion, and instead chose Aluwyn. At some point during Willow's training, the two began an affair and even began to sleep together.

Tara is an accomplished and exceptionally knowledgeable "natural" witch with an inherited talent to manipulate magical forces, allowing her to:

■Perform spells and rituals alone or with the aid of others
■Project and perform spectacular magical feats such as aura-reading, telekinesis and levitation by sheer force of will
■Fluency in Latin.

Relationships

■Willow Rosenberg — Tara met Willow in a Wicca group during college, and began a relationship which became sexual (cf. "The I in Team"). Unlike the heterosexual couples on Buffy, the two were very rarely shown in remotely intimate situations with each other, not kissing on screen until the season 5 episode "The Body", nearly a full season after they came out. They were portrayed as each other's "true love" throughout the series, shadowing Willow's Season Seven relationship with Potential Slayer Kennedy. During the episode "Tabula Rasa," in which the Scoobies fell victim to an amnesia spell, there was still a heavy attraction between Willow and Tara, reinforcing the message of true love.

The common powers of the Slayers: these include superhuman strength, accelerated healing, prophetic dreams, enhanced intuition, and innately superior fighting skills.

Relationships

Xander Harris — After his relationship with Cordelia ended, Xander found himself helping Faith fight a demon one night in the episode "The Zeppo." After the battle, Faith took Xander back to her motel room and had sex with him; taking Xander's virginity. In "Consequences", after Faith had gone rogue and killed a man, Xander felt like he could talk to her because they had a connection, which Buffy disputes by saying that the evening probably meant more to Xander than to Faith. He did confront her but Faith was extremely annoyed that people were trying to reach out to her. She started to rape Xander and then to strangle him before being hit in the head with a baseball bat by Angel. Faith mentioned that she never wanted a relationship like Xander thought that she did, and was merely with him for the sex. During Season 7 of Buffy, when some Potential Slayers complained about Anya discussing her sex-life with Xander, Faith tells them she reminds Anya that she was Xander's first, which as she claims "Makes her shut the hell right up."

Robin Wood — After Faith's return in Season 7 to help Buffy and the Potential Slayers fight the First Evil, Buffy also enlisted the help of the principal of Sunnydale High School, Robin Wood. Robin's mother was a Slayer and after she was killed he was raised by her Watcher. Robin became interested in Faith and the two become physically intimate in the episode "Touched." Although it appeared that the two continued seeing each other, Faith has no interest in anything serious. Prior to the final battle in the episode "Chosen," Robin expressed his annoyance that Faith viewed men as mere sex objects and her claims that all men would eventually leave. Faith apoligized if it seemed like she was blowing him off (which she appearently intended to do.) When Robin claimed their experience didn't 'rock his world' Faith got rather upset, then Robin promised to surprise her if they survived and she agreed to let him try. After the battle against The First Evil, Robin lay in the bus with Faith by his side and briefly passed out. Faith reached out to close his eyes and he surprised her by surviving.

■Willow Rosenberg — Willow continued her recovery from Tara's death as she embarked on a relationship with this Potential Slayer. Andrew stated that Kennedy and Willow were living together in South America.[19] Following her month-long mystical death, they decided to take things slow but broke up after the destruction of the Seed of Wonder.

Rupert Giles - A computer science teacher at Sunnydale High, Jenny was a techno-pagan.

Relationships

Buffy Summers - Buffy found some normality in Riley, but she also found someone to whom she could relate.
Initially, each kept the other from knowing of the secret lives, but the truth came out when monsters called The Gentlemen stole everyone's voices. Buffy and Riley fought demons together and continued saving each other's lives and the world, although Riley was never quite let into Buffy's inner circle.Riley began to see himself as beneath Buffy in strength, so he began to push his body well past its limits in the hopes that he would catch up to her. After learning that the drugs Maggie Walsh had given him were causing his pain receptors to shut down and his heartbeat to spike, Riley initially refused medical treatment from the government out of paranoia, but Buffy eventually managed to convince him. Seeking thrills, and wondering what Buffy found so appealing about vampires -having allowed both Angel and Dracula to drink her blood- Riley began to let vampires feed from him, which Buffy discovered with Spike's help. His behavior, as well as Spike's manipulations and a sense that Buffy would never truly love him, led to their breakup. Despite Buffy's best efforts to stop him, Riley rejoined the military and departed.

Samantha Finn - Riley met Sam in South America. Together, they forged a strong duo of demon-hunting super-spies; soon they were happily married, Sam returned to Sunnydale with Riley while they were tracking demon eggs that were being traded by the mysterious 'Doctor'.

In addition to having the common powers and vulnerabilities of a vampire, Angel possesses many qualities unique to himself:

■Advanced age grants him physical abilities superior to those of most other vampires and demons.
■Psychic links with his sired progeny allow him to experience vague dreams based on their recent deeds and sense their presence.
■Temporary precognitive visions granted by the Powers That Be passed down to him from Cordelia and Doyle.

■Fluency in several languages (such as English, Korean, Tibetan, French, Italian, Spanish, German, Greek, Latin, Romanian and Russian).
■Master of both physical and psychological torture.
■Superior knowledge of demonology and history due to his long lifetime.
■Experienced in witchcraft and sorcery, adept with glamours, rituals, and exorcisms.
■Photographic memory.
■Skilled sketch artist.
■As Twilight, all of his pre-existing powers are greatly enhanced, in addition to being able to fly and possessing a degree of invulnerability.

Relationships

■Darla: The vampire who turned Liam into Angelus, Angelus and Darla were lovers for over a century- Darla even leaving the Master to live with her 'dear boy'- until Angelus' transformation into Angel drove them. Although he briefly tried to redeem himself in her eyes by continuing to kill humans- Angel even admits that he initially sought Darla rather than redemption after he first gained his soul-, he eventually left her when he was forced to accept that he didn't have it in him to kill innocents any more. Because Darla sired Angel, he sees her as something of a maternal figure, even feeling something for her when his soul was restored, although he nevertheless denies any claims that he loved her as Angelus as he regards his demon as being incapable of feeling love. During Darla's brief moments of humanity - when she is resurrected by Wolfram & Hart - Angel goes above and beyond in trying to help her atone, but later admits to her and himself that this was more out of a desire to prove that he could save himself rather than a desire to save Darla. When Darla becomes pregnant with her and Angel's son, Connor, Darla tells Angel that their son is "the only good thing" that they ever did together; she then stakes herself in order to allow Connor to be born.

■Buffy Summers: When Angel first sees Buffy, he realizes that he wants to be someone and his faith in humanity is inspired. When they sleep together for the first time, Angel loses his soul, becoming Angelus. Buffy is forced to kill him, to save the world, even though Willow has just ensouled him. After he returns from Hell, he and Buffy still love each other, and attempt a relationship. After realizing this relationship is unfair to Buffy and he needs to begin his path to redemption, he leaves. Buffy comes to L.A., and for a brief time, Angel becomes human and they spend one blissful day together; but ultimately, he has to rewind the day because his humanity will eventually lead to Buffy's death and undermine their attempts at helping people. After he is turned back, only Angel himself has any memory of their day together and what they could have had. Later on, their relationship becomes strained, partly because of Buffy's new boyfriend but also because of the fact that Angel tries to help Faith, the ex-rogue slayer. When Buffy's mother died during season five of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" Angel came to comfort her and they shared a kiss before he left again, much to the pain of both of them. After Buffy dies in the fifth season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel spends months away at a monastery in Asia, feeling guilty that her death has not ended him. Also, shortly after Buffy's resurrection, they met somewhere between Los Angeles and Sunnydale as they both felt they needed to see one another - this, however, occurs off-screen. Buffy would describe this encounter as "intense." He comes to help Buffy in the Buffy series finale and provides aid to Buffy in the final fight against Caleb. He gives her an amulet that proves important in the final confrontation with the First. He goes to seek Buffy out in Italy during the last season of Angel, albeit unsuccessfully. Angel and Spike's relationships with Buffy are left on even grounds with Andrew saying Buffy loves them both. Buffy stated in "Selfless", "I loved Angel more than I will ever love anything in this life." She also expresses that she sometimes still thinks about a future with Angel in "Chosen", but it will be years, if ever. When Angel meets her again after his identity as Twilight is exposed, he implies that there is a reason for their feelings for each other, stating that they have such a connection that they will never be able to be happy with anyone else, although his subsequent period under Twilight's control leaves their relationship in greater trouble.

Cordelia Chase: Friends for years, Angel and Cordelia eventually realize that they have fallen in love with one another, only to be torn apart by her ascension and transformation and his imprisonment underwater by Connor before they can tell each other. Upon their subsequent returns, they do not pursue the relationship; Cordelia instead, under the control of Jasmine, forms a relationship with Angel's son, which results in her falling into a coma when Jasmine uses her body to create an independent host for itself. In Angel's perfect day dream-sequence, Angel ends it by consummating the relationship, but calls out "Buffy!" as he is losing his soul. Later, Cordelia returns to put Angel back on track to stopping the Apocalypse. She does this and just before she dies, Cordelia and Angel share their first and only real kiss. In doing so, one last vision (which is only a one-shot deal) showing Angel that the Circle of the Black Thorn are the Senior Partners' most powerful agents on Earth, is passed to him, helping him to stop the Apocalypse from the inside.

■Nina Ash: A werewolf who Angel saves from being eaten, she develops feelings for Angel and he is eventually convinced to give a relationship a shot. This relationship establishes that Angel is able to have positive sex (unlike his "perfect despair" moment with Darla) and still keep his soul. The two break up when Angel attempts to send her away to save her from the Senior Partners' inevitable revenge.

Relationships

Devon MacLeish — The charismatic lead singer of Oz's band, Dingoes Ate My Baby, was unhappily dating Cordelia in Season Two's "Halloween."

Xander Harris — After repeatedly being thrown into life-or-death situations together, Cordelia and Xander began a physical relationship that eventually became a real romantic attachment. Cordelia briefly broke up with him in the episode "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered" because of the negative effect that their relationship was having on her social standing, but after he showed how much he cared about her, she agreed to date him again. Their relationship was permanently ended roughly a year after it began, when she caught him kissing Willow Rosenberg (although they later became friends again, as seen by Xander secretly buying her prom dress after he learned about her financial issues).

Wesley Wyndam-Pryce - Cordelia was attracted to him during Season 3 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and constantly flirted with him, likening him to James Bond. In the Season 3 Buffy finale "Graduation Day" they shared an awkward kiss in the High School library. They are reunited as members of Angel Investigations but their infatuation is never rekindled- with an exception in "Parting Gifts" when Cordelia kisses Wesley to get rid of her visions before registering his identity-, the two falling into a more familial role.

Allen Francis Doyle — Cordelia first dismissed him as a badly-dressed loser, but as they spent more time together, she began to consider the possibility of a relationship; she was even prepared to date Doyle after learning about his half-demon nature, despite her typical disdain of demons. Cordelia and Doyle kissed shortly before his death, which gave her his visions from The Powers That Be.

Groosalugg — He met Cordelia in the alternate dimension Pylea when she was made a Princess because of her visions. "Groo" (as she affectionately called him) was meant to mate with her and receive her visions, but Cordelia refused, because she didn't want to lose the visions and risk being useless to Angel Investigations. Cordelia and Groo fell for one another and when the Pylean government collapsed, Groo found a portal to Los Angeles and sought his Princess out again. They carried on their relationship and were able to become intimate once Cordelia bought a "mystical prophylactic" from a demon bordello that prevented her from losing the visions with intercourse. At first, it seemed as if this really could be happily ever after, but Groo chivalrously stepped aside and left town when he realized that Cordelia's heart lay with Angel.

Connor — Cordelia and Connor bonded after she returned to Earth with amnesia, as he was the only one didn't lie to her. Connor developed romantic feelings for her, but Cordelia was reluctant to pursue any such avenues until she really knew who she was. After the being who would later be known as Jasmine took possession of Cordelia's body, it used her to seduce Connor. When her memory was intact and she was in control of her body, Cordelia generally served as more of a mother figure to Connor, Connor reflecting after his 'true' memories were restored that their relationship was fundamentally oedipal.

■Angel — Cordelia noticed Angel before she found out he was a vampire (her exact words on seeing him were "Hello, salty goodness!"), but he was interested in Buffy then. After moving to Los Angeles, she saw what a kind, good-hearted man Angel was, that would fight for good no matter what, and fell in love with him. However, various events (particularly Cordelia's possession by Jasmine) kept them from admitting their feelings to each other, although shortly before Cordelia died, the two shared a single kiss, and she died loving Angel, knowing that Angel loved her back. In After the Fall #12, Cordelia comes to a dying Angel to ease him into death. He tells her he loves her but cannot go with her. However, when he sees a vision of himself apparently on the side of evil in the final battle, he was prepared to leave with her, only for Cordelia to bring him out of his mood by informing him that he could never allow himself to be what he saw in the vision.

Relationships

■Virginia Bryce — The two met and slept together in the Angel episode "Guise Will Be Guise" under the false pretense that Wesley was in fact Angel (Virginia's father had been attempting to hire Angel as a bodyguard for her, with Wesley posing as Angel due to the real Angel currently being away on a 'spiritual retreat' due to his recent obsession with Darla). However, the two continued in a fairly serious relationship for the rest of the second season, but Virginia left because she didn't feel capable of coping with Wesley's lifestyle.

■Lilah Morgan — Lilah and Wesley's relationship initially began as simply physical but eventually grew into something more. Wesley broke off the relationship after realizing that he could no longer bring himself to ride the line of good and evil.

■Winifred Burkle — From the beginning of Season 3 until the end of the series, Wesley was quite clearly in love with Fred. This set him at odds with Charles Gunn. Even after the others broke ties with him, Wesley continued to help Fred when she needed it. In the episode Lineage, Wesley shot to death who he thought was his father in order to protect Fred. Fred began pursuing him in the episode Smile Time (though he was completely clueless to her hints), and their relationship would last about a week. Wesley was the only one with her when she died. Alexis Denisof described Wesley as being obsessed with Fred and that he viewed her as his soulmate.

■Illyria — Though not a romantic relationship, Wesley felt drawn to Illyria as she was all that remained of Fred. Although they were mostly at each other's throats for a long period, Wesley took a keen interest in helping Illyria navigate Earth, and was easily the person who understood her eccentricities the most. For her part, Illyria treated Wesley as a trusted guide and adviser. At the very end, Illyria took Fred's shape and gave him a moment of comfort before he died. Illyria had also grown to like him enough that she admited concern for him and came to aid him out of concern for his well-being. Illyria was also enraged by his death and avenged him, but wanted to do more violence as a result of her rage.

Relationships

Angel: Fred's relationship with Angel was an interesting one: when Angel saved her from Pylea he "vamped out", but rather than his face changing like usual, due to the unusual nature of Pylea the demon inside of him came out completely. After killing two guards—but notably simply sniffing Fred before leaving—it tried to kill Gunn and Wesley, until Fred, her right hand soaked in blood, lured the demon back to her cave. Fred cared for Angel as he recovered, and remains the only person who wasn't scared by Angel's demon after learning about his vampire nature. When Angel brought Fred back to L.A., he took her in and was the only member of the team that didn't seem unnerved by her state of mind. She had a crush on him for a time after her arrival, but eventually got over it when she learned about the curse on his soul. Fred cared for his son Connor (she was the only other member of the team who was present at his birth), both when he was a baby and when he reappeared as a teen (until he betrayed Angel, at which point she tortured him with a taser and knocked him out). When Fred was being devoured by Illyria, Angel considered but discarded a plan that would kill tens of thousands to save her. And ultimately, as Angel's soul had been ripped out of his body to make way for the demon, her soul had been ripped from her body to make way for Illyria. Though their relationship wasn't romantic, Fred did kiss him once to fool passersby into thinking they were just a random couple. When she asked if he thought they bought it, he replied "I did."

■Charles Gunn: After Fred gets over her crush on Angel, she and Gunn two fall in love and start a relationship that lasts for about a year, before they break up after Gunn kills one of Fred's old college professors to prevent her doing it herself. Despite the evident discomfort in their relationship after this event, it is implied that feelings continue to linger afterward.

Knox: Fred's assistant in Wolfram & Hart; the two date briefly, but Fred ultimately decides that the two of them should only be friends. Knox's bizarre obsession with Fred causes him to use her body as Illyria's new form because he thought she was the only person "worthy" of a such a "gift".

■Wesley Wyndam-Pryce: Wesley had been enamored with Fred from nearly the beginning. Wesley's first chance to be with Fred was shot down when he tried to kill her while affected by the misogynistic Billy. He was very hurt when Fred chose to be with Gunn, but always came to help when she was in danger, especially after he had been ousted from the gang. Fred and Wesley date after she breaks up with Knox, a relationship that ends prematurely following her death and possession by Illyria.

Relationships

Cordelia Chase - Angel and Cordelia were close to starting a relationship when Groo unexpectedly appears in Los Angeles. He explained that he had been deposed in a revolution on Pylea, and decided to find Cordelia again. The feelings that Cordelia had for Angel were immediately put on hold, and instead she chose to rekindle her romance with Groo. She even went as far as to find a mystical spell which allowed her both to have sex with Groo and retain her visions, and gave him a makeover to have him resemble Angel right down to his hairstyle. Angel was jealous of Groo for many reasons, including that Cordelia chose Groo over him and that Groo was just as formidable a fighter as himself. For a time, Angel was concerned that Groo would replace him, since he possessed equally dangerous combat skills while he lacked most of Angel's weaknesses, but Wesley assured Angel that he remained their reason and drive for fighting the good fight in the first place. Despite proving his continued worth to the group with a victory against a life-sucking tree demon that Groo could never have defeated himself, Angel gave Cordelia money and asked that she and Groo go on an extended holiday since he was unable to stand being witness to their relationship. When Cordelia and Groo returned, they found that some terrible things had happened in their absence, such as Connor being stolen by Holtz and Wesley having betrayed the team in an attempt to protect Connor from a prophecy that seemed to foretell Angel killing his son. Cordelia immediately began to pay more attention to Angel, and Groo started to realize that Cordelia did not love him but rather Angel. Groo finally mustered up the courage to tell Cordelia this, and he then leaves Los Angeles for parts unknown.

Team Angel (ally)
Notable Powers
■Werewolf physiology grants him the potential to transform into a berserk, lupine creature with enhanced strength, speed, stamina and sense of smell. Unlike most werewolves, who change into animal form on the nights around the full moon, Oz has control over his form, no longer changing due to the phases of the moon because of releasing the energy of the wolf into the earth.
■Heightened sense of smell when in human form and the ability to identify others by scent.

Relationships

■Angel — After becoming a werewolf, she voluntarily came to Wolfram and Hart every month during the full moon in order to be caged, a similar arrangement that Daniel Osbourne had in the Sunnydale High library. Angel eventually realized, with the help of Wesley Wyndam-Pryce, that it was time to pick up the pieces of his turgid love life and ask Nina out for coffee. This was hindered by the fact Angel had morphed into a puppet, but regardless, he overcame his fear of dating. Nina was referenced as being Angel's girlfriend often (usually by Wesley) and the pair had eventually had sex, prompting her to joke about whether or not Angel was perfectly happy. She tried to get closer to Angel, who, worried about the impending apocalypse at the hands of the Senior Partners, attempted to send Nina, her sister, and her niece away.

Notable Powers
Darla had the standard powers and vulnerabilities of a vampire, though her bloodline and advanced age gave her physical abilities superior to those of most other vampires and demons.

Relationships

■Angel/Angelus: Darla was Angel's sire. The pair were lovers until Angelus' transformation into Angel drove them apart, although he briefly tried to redeem himself in her eyes before recognising that he couldn't be what he had been before. As Angel viewed Darla as something of a maternal figure, Darla viewed Angel as her "darling boy", although Angel later rejected the idea that Darla and Angelus had ever loved each other as Angelus lacked the ability to love without a soul. During Darla's brief moments of humanity (after being resurrected by Wolfram & Hart), Angel went to great lengths to try to help her atone, something an ensouled Darla acknowledged and respects about him. When Darla became pregnant with her and Angel's son, Darla told Angel that their son was "the only good thing" that they had ever done together; she then staked herself in order to allow their son (Connor) to be born.

Werewolf physiology grants her the potential to transform into a berserk, wolf-like creature with enhanced strength, and speed and sense of smell during the nights of full moon. Unlike "younger" werewolves, she retains full memories of her experiences in her werewolf state.

Relationships

■Oz: She sensed immediately that Oz was a werewolf, though he did not realize she too was a werewolf until much later.During one of Oz's wolf nights, he escaped from his cage and copulated with a female werewolf, who turned out to be Veruca. Veruca tried to convince Oz to embrace the werewolf instead of fighting it and locking himself away while he transformed. She claimed that, because they shared this affliction, they should be together, free. Oz attempted to protect people from Veruca by locking her, along with himself, in his cage, a place in which they mated again. Their affair was discovered by Willow, who tried to use her magic to curse both of them, but could not bring herself to hurt Oz. Veruca sought Willow out with the intent to kill her and almost succeeded. However, Oz, in his werewolf form, fought and killed Veruca
