In a bid to deeper explore the world of music, we bring you a journey through the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It's probably the last list we'll do on Listal... at least for a while, because it's been an absolute nightmare to put together. I hope the few people who wander this way get something from it.

------
KEY SONGS
------

We decided when we started this list that we needed common rules for key songs on the performer entries, so this is how we worked things out.

------
THE 660 SONGS THAT SHAPED ROCK AND ROLL
------

This is a list of songs compiled by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's chief curator, James Henke, with the help of writers and critics. There were originally 500 songs on the list, but another 160 have since been added.

------
THE GRAMMY HALL OF FAME
------

The Hall of Fame was established in 1973 to honour significant recordings that are at least 25 years old.

------
ROLLING STONE'S
'500 GREATEST SONGS OF ALL TIME'
------

Rolling Stone first published this list in 2004. before revising it in 2010, and then completely remaking it in 2021. We've only used the latest offering for our listings.

------
RIAA CERTIFICATIONS
------

We had to establish a rule early on with regards to what qualified as a key song. We considered using chart position, but that can be as much about luck as anything else because it depended on what else was released at the time. We also had concerns about how older songs were quite often divided between the main pop chart and the R&B chart and didn't want things to get too messy... so we settled for certification as a way to deal with the sale side of things. This unfortunately ruled out many older tracks, because the record companies didn't always request certification - we hope that these gaps have been plugged by the other criteria.

------
ISSUE
------

We still have some artists with no songs listed under them, but using a common rule for the list makes things difficult when it comes to the likes of Laura Nyro and Willie Dixon, who are better known by the number of artists who have gone on to cover their songs..

------
RELEASE DATES
------

Dates for some tracks differ from one list to another so we used both Wikipedia and Discogs to try and work things out.

------
ALBUMS
------

It was decided (after already doing a fair chunk of what was supposed to simply be a song list) that we should include album information. So I set about trying to add a section. In hindsight, it would've been better to have gone about it in the same way as the key songs, but it is what it is now. We decided not to include compilations at first but later added any that have achieved Diamond certification, because this suggests lasting appeal with the buying public.

------
MUSICAL EXCELLENCE
------

We weren't sure how best to represent those inducted for musical excellence because their body of work is usually large and varied so we simply opted to look for one often cited example of what they do best. We hope that this is enough.

------
AHMET ERTEGUN AWARD
FOR NON-PERFORMERS
------

I thought that this section would be the easiest, but it turned into something of a nightmare as I worked out what to include in their entries.

------
MULTIPLE INDUCTEES
------

Band members who have been inducted elsewhere are displayed in bold.

------
NOMINEES
------

Personal information has been left out on these entries because you can never be sure which members of a band will actually be inducted if they are ever chosen.

------
SOLO/BAND WORK
------

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducts artists either for solo work or as part of a band. For this list, we have combined all of an artist's work in each listing - so while 'The Beatles' displays all of the work as a band, the entry for John Lennon lists all of his work with 'The Beatles and his own solo work. This has led to quite a bit of repetition, but since not all bands an artist has worked for have been inducted to the Hall of Fame, it does offer a more complete view this way. It also helps to demonstrate when an inducted artist may not have been a part of an inducted band. For instance, Eric Clapton was a member of 'The Yardbirds', but was not part of the band when they released 'Shape of Things'... which instead appears in the listing for Jeff Beck, as well as in that of the band.

------
FINAL ADDITIONS
------

When the list information was complete and all we needed to do was finish watching and linking the videos (since this as much a musical journey for us as anything), we decided to add Hollywood Walk of Fame stars and Grammy Award counts. There has been a little discretion here: Carlos Santana for instance, has a star but the only listing here is for the band, but we've included it anyway. John Lennon has two stars... one with The Beatles and another in his own right, so we've included both.

We've noticed quite a few errors as I've add further information to entries, and it's quite likely that there are many more. This was put together as a musical journey rather than a factual document, and since we copied one entry to another before editing it, it's incredibly easy to forget to alter something. If you do spot an error, let us know and we'll look into it.
