NOTE: First screening in the refurbished downstairs screens, in this case what used to be an IMAX yet was reverted to a regular screen but with recliner seats. The redevelopment shows when you’re sitting in the back row and the barrier blocks your view as you recline.

2021 was a truly bananas year as far as moviegoing progress could take me. Five agonising months trapped in my bedroom watching all media on the same screen, trying my hardest not to switch on the second screen and multitask, willingly suffering through virtual festival after virtual festival, because socially distanced cinemas were less safe than hairdressers according to Boris, then five more months of unbridled chaos in which moviegoing turned from with H&S measures intact the safest place to be into a risk of passing through an ongoing terrorist attack involving white men chanting without protection about football and sticking flares up their backsides, into a risk of sitting directly between a bunch of maskless chatterboxes.

And even with the ill-timed de-mandating of masks and social distancing, I managed a couple of entire film festivals in venue, tried out lousy blockbusters that weren’t Marvel rubbish, cured my streaming fatigue by going out to revisit some of the decade’s highlights almost as if lockdown never tampered with their release, took all the way home the first poster in a decade I’ve felt was suited for my wall, sat next to the same moviegoer five times, survived the aforementioned football-inspired terrorist attack just for a immaculately sound-proofed double feature of The Croods 2 and Hedwig and the Angry Inch and, in a very unusual change of pace for the UK, ended the whole thing on a print screening of Licorice Pizza with my cousin. Which in turn had its trailer premiere on celluloid in front of my screening of Beavis and Butt-Head Do America. And in a global pandemic, I managed 200 first-time screenings throughout the year for a third time. And I never once caught the coronavirus.

2021 was a year that in picking up 2020 postponements united most of the great auteurs: Spielberg, PTA, Almódovar, Sciamma, Shyamalan, Ridley Scott (twice!), Katie Mitchell, Wes Anderson, Joachim Trier, Lana Wachowski, etcetera, etcetera. If anything, this year, or at least these seven months outside of lockdown, could have given conclusive evidence that art can truly heal the world, except that celebrities are now using pictures of ugly monkeys to literally hurt the planet, people are bickering about movies on Twitter for all the wrong reasons and there’s a good chance the newest live-action Spider-Man might have been a superspreader just because the audience recognised a few characters.

And though it’s a cliché to expect little from any year, 2022 so far appears to be a year in which cinemas, despite some 2020 holdovers suffering even more delays and major festivals having to cancel in-person events, are bouncing back the best they can in spite of Omicron. No longer is it unnatural to get to see a new Pixar on the big screen, the HBO Max deal is done and dusted, and for better and for worse, we’ve seen that movies can still cross a billion, as long as they’re the only IP audiences will risk their very life to go out and point at. So with fewer festivals at risk of cancellation as long as we get our crap together and (slightly) less chance of noteworthy, theatrical-bound movies heading to streaming, how can 2022 write itself as any more significant than 2021?

probably another lockdown i dunno
