He taught Arya to fight and protected her with his life. He was her friend and a mentor, not to mention awesome and badass.

He protected Arya, and gave his life to protect her and Gendry. He was a good man, likeable, and he died a total badass.

He may be brutal, but he's smart. A capable fighter and a competent commander. Some of his methods may be extreme, but usually there are good reasons for it. He's not some "vicious idiot" like Joffrey.
Plus he's funny.
