Alex Kidd in Miracle World - Sega Master System

My parents decided to bought my sister and I the master system II console when I was a child, the version which included this game internally. I don't remember exactly when it was, but I remember pretty well the times we spend playing together. It was really fun for us, the whole family, trying to guess the paper, scissors, stone game, and taking notes about it for the next plays.

The game itself is pretty good and I have played it sometimes through my life and I still enjoyed it. Some tracks have been in my mind all these years and I still enjoy a lot some stages, like the castles (specially the last one), and the ones where you could ride bikes and helicopters.

A superb game indeed, and one that brings me a lot of good memories.

Day 2 - Your Favourite Character: Vivi Ornitier

Final Fantasy IX - PlayStation

There are so many good characters in most of the games I've played, and a lot of them have a place in my mind, so it has been very difficult to determine only one.

His evolution through the game, since you meet him in Alexandria with his ticket, to the very end of the game; the sad moments when he’s trying to find answers in the ones like him; the memories of his “grandpa”; the relationship with Steiner; the very ending itself… There are many things that make Vivi a memorable character.

Day 3 - A game that is underrated

People who added this item 60 Average listal rating (34 ratings) 5.9 IMDB Rating 0
Chaos Legion - PlayStation 2

This game got a lot of bad reviews because all people was saying it's monotonous and boring. Well, I had a really good time playing it, and it's still one of my favorite Beat 'em ups.

It has a common story, common characters and so on. Also a similar aesthetic to Devil May Cry, and I think this is what “killed” this title: people won’t stop comparing both Capcom games. They are different games!!! If you love DMC it’s ok, but this shouldn’t diminish the value of this game itself.

I enjoyed a lot the Legion system during all the fun hours which the game provide me. The music was above average for tension moments and I got really frustrated for its difficulty sometimes.

I hoped for a sequel that should have solved its flaws (obviously it has them), because it would be a really great title for sure, but I stopped thinking about it long ago. This reminds me for another Capcom title that right now it’s somewhat underrated too: Dragon’s Dogma. Because I think it’s a similar case, but I have better hopes in a sequel from this one.

Day 4 - Your guilty pleasure game

People who added this item 24 Average listal rating (12 ratings) 7.5 IMDB Rating 0
SingStar Rocks! - PlayStation 2

I’m not particularly ashamed of any of the video games I play, because I really don’t care what people would say about any of them. But I confess that sometimes it feels a little silly, me playing this game alone. I mean, it’s more fun if you sing in group, and I usually do that way, but sometimes I can’t help it, so I end up singing some songs by myself.

Day 5 - Game character you feel you are most like

Gabriel Knight

I should have said many loner and silent characters, such as Vincent from FFVII, but Gabriel Knight it's more a real person than others I may think.

A hard-going writer with tons of sarcasm, and who can't stop giving an humor line. That's it.

Day 6 - Most annoying character: Trouble Bruin

People who added this item 31 Average listal rating (22 ratings) 7.7 IMDB Rating 0
Dynamite Headdy - Sega Genesis and Mega Drive

Seriously, when I was a chikd I hated this guy. You keep on beating him but he comes back eternally... Facing you once again with some strange new machine. By the way, Baby Face is also annoying (and way too hard to beat), but at least he only appears in one stage.

I will present also a runner-up for this category, as Amy Rose also gives me the creeps in some Sonic games (What's wrong with her?!)

Day 7 - Favorite game couple: Cecil & Rosa

People who added this item 59 Average listal rating (24 ratings) 8.3 IMDB Rating 0

They are a couple before the opening of the game, and they don't hesitate a moment through it. Also, I remember a moment when Cecil doesn't want Rosa to go with him beacuse it will be dangerous and she asks something like: "and who would heal your wounds?".

A curious fact: in the SNES game was a scene when the sprites kisses and it was censored in the USA version, although it's really hard to see beacause of the graphics.

Day 8 - Best soundtrack

People who added this item 123 Average listal rating (60 ratings) 7.3 IMDB Rating 0
Trine - PC Games

Since it's very difficult for me to decide, I put one of the latest game soundtracks I've been addicted to. The music of Trine is simply involving; it submerges you perfectly in the medieval fantasy world that the game depicts. Also, it’s really compact and coherent, I mean, all of the songs belong to the atmosphere, and they’re varied, they’re not at all repetitive.

I hope Uematsu sensei doesn't get angry, because any of the FF titles could fit this category. Other titles that could have ended here are Braid, Shadow of the Colossus, Heavy Rain, Wild Arms... And, of course, the Silent Hill series.

Day 9 - Saddest game scene: FFX Ending

People who added this item 1460 Average listal rating (1376 ratings) 7.5 IMDB Rating 0
Final Fantasy X - PlayStation 2

One of the most sensitive moments in gaming. I don't want to give any more spoilers (maybe the picture is one already), but I have to say it's a very japanese-like ending, and so I love it. And the reason which I dislike FFX-2...

Day 10 - Best gameplay

People who added this item 63 Average listal rating (23 ratings) 7.8 IMDB Rating 0
Dragon's Dogma - PlayStation 3

RPG elements as leveling, lots of equipment and items, character classes, passive and active abilities that make you think about which set is better to equip depending on the occasion, battle interaction as an Action RPG... and greatly made monsters, awesome monsters that get you experimenting with all the above elements to beat them. The combat is simpy thrilling and addictive, so I couldn't stop playing for hours and hours.

Also the pawn system is very interesting, because they are characters made by other people, but controlled by the AI, so it's not a MMORPG but you can meet people.

And one more element: the night. It can sound silly, but the first time I went out of town at night I was scared. You have to listen the sound effects rather than seeing the scenery to have a glimpse of what's going on... and what's coming up to get you.

The game itself has its flaws, like the simple story or poor npcs, but they do the work to present the world. And I hope these worse elements get improved on the sequel...

Day 11 - Gaming system of choice

People who added this item 203 Average listal rating (121 ratings) 8 IMDB Rating 0
Sega Dreamcast - Game Hardware

After years of playing the PSX in friends and relatives' houses I got my own modern video console, on the christmas holydays it was released.

It had a lot of exclusive titles and introduced the online gaming in the console environment, which I think it was a really great step in the industry. It had a short life but I still recall gaming moments from that time.

Great games (and IPs) that made their first appearence in Dreamcast (although most of them have been released in other platforms, and many came from sega arcades): Shenmue (1 & 2), Sonic Adventure (1 & 2), Jet Set Radio, Skies of Arcadia, Grandia II, Resident Evil: Code Veronica, Toy Commander or Crazy Taxi.

Also, I enoyed a lot of multiplayer games (both offline and online) like Soul Calibur, Power Stone 2, ChuChu Rocket, Phantasy Star Online, Virtua Tennis Wacky Races or Gauntlet Legends.

Day 12 - A game everyone should play

People who added this item 87 Average listal rating (47 ratings) 8.6 IMDB Rating 0
Shenmue II - Sega Dreamcast

Maybe it has aged, but this game introduced a lot of elements that are being still used in a lot of modern games (such as QTE).

The premise is simple, live the life of Ryo Hazuki in his quest for vengeance, but what makes the game special it’s that it is literally: live his life. You have to earn money (work, gamble,… ) in order to be able to maintain yourself while your following the clues that have to lead you to Lan Di. And you can spend the whole day playing the arcades if you want.

This is the game where I have felt most the sensation of living in, really, and where I have felt most freedom. Most modern sandbox games don’t give me the same feelings, thought they have liberty to do tons of quests, explore, and so on. That is the main reason why I’m recommending Shenmue II to anyone. Although I know many people dislike the game, give it a try, try to live it.

Day 13 - A game you’ve played more than five times

People who added this item 32 Average listal rating (18 ratings) 6.8 IMDB Rating 0
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 - Sega Master System

I have played a lot of classic games more than five times, but I’ve tried to think back on the game I’ve beaten the largest number of times. I think it’s this one.

I can recall a lot of the stages, and I believe that I could find all the hidden emeralds if I played now, so I think it must be one of the games I’ve played most.

Other candidates were: Sonic 1 (Genesis), Double Dragon, or the Alex Kidd which appears already in this list; and some more modern games as Resident Evil 2 or Metal Gear Solid 2.

Day 16 - Game with the best cut scenes

People who added this item 139 Average listal rating (75 ratings) 7.7 IMDB Rating 0
Resident Evil CODE: Veronica - Sega Dreamcast

At first I had no idea what to put in this category, and I started to think about it deeply. In the process I realized many memorable moments as cut scenes where from this game. It was the first RE to have a cinematic style, and so the cut scenes were really captivating. A few examples are (without giving spoilers): the intro where Claire is escaping, some monsters' appearance, Chris climbing the cliffs, the first Wesker Matrix-movements in the series, the speeches of the Ashford brothers, and... a particular moment with Steve Burnside's persecution.

There are probably more modern games with better cut scenes, but it seems I got pretty impressed with some of the ones from this title.

Day 17 - Favorite antagonist: Miles Edgeworth

People who added this item 490 Average listal rating (333 ratings) 7.8 IMDB Rating 0

Since the introduction of the character in the game, he has a strong personality, and the game results on an adjusted battle of wits between Phoenix and him. I'm pretty sure the beginning of the sries wouldn't have been the same without him, although I really like the other prosecutors a lot, such as Godot.

He evolves, and you can explore even more of him in his own spin-off series. A pity that the second game seems it’s not having an official release out of Japan...

Day 18 - Favorite protagonist: Laharl

People who added this item 258 Average listal rating (112 ratings) 8 IMDB Rating 0
Disgaea: Hour of Darkness - PlayStation 2

As always I had a difficult time picking one protagonist, because there are too many to choose from.

Laharl is an arrogant and powerful character, and he evolves without losing this traits. It could fit with another game antagonist personality, and this is one of the main reasons I have chosen him. The other one is his relationship with Flonne as the game progresses.

Runner-ups for this category would be: Ryudo (Grandia II), Solid Snake, Marona (Phantom Brave), Adam Jensen (Deus Ex: Human revolution), Cloud Strife, Wander (Shadow ot Colossus), Vyse (Skies of Arcadia), or even Sonic.

Skies of Arcadia - Sega Dreamcast

A whole world of floating island waiting to be explored. Amazing ships to fly the sky. And, of course, the ideal would be enrolling the Delphinus crew under Vyse's command!

I was tempted to say Pokemon, but that was more an idea from my childhood.

Day 20 - Favorite genre: RPG

People who added this item 117 Average listal rating (71 ratings) 8.1 IMDB Rating 0
Final Fantasy V - Super famicom and SNES

I have predilection for the JRPG classics, but I enjoy any kind of RPG video game.

I prefer linear stories and the sensation the game is telling me a story, rather than you're a silent character and can do as you please (I know it's for the sansation YOU are the character, but for that I prefer paper and dice RPG). But I love in-depth worlds strongly depicted as the Baldur's Gate saga or Planscape Torment.

Also, I like getting engaged with the growing up system, learning its tricks and trying to master it. That's why I put FFV, because it has one of my favorite personalization systems.

Day 21 - Game with the best story

People who added this item 601 Average listal rating (472 ratings) 8.6 IMDB Rating 0
Silent Hill 2 - PlayStation 2

I could have put many of my favorite RPGs in this list, but I think Silent Hill 2 deserves this.

It's a game with a mature storytelling and good narrative techniques (and well applied). James Sunderland evolution during the game tells you that he’s for real, that he’s made of bone, flesh, and all the good and bad things that we all are made. The other inhabitants, and Silent Hill itself as a character, are creepy, and make a strong atmosphere, in many cases through weird dialogues and scenes.

A really good example that video games can make good and mature narrative.

Although, as usual, I will add some runner-ups, to keep my mind in peace...: FF VI, VII, IX, MGS, SotC, Persona 2: IS, BGII, GK: SoF, or Portal.

Final Fantasy X-2 - PlayStation 2

I really enjoyed the battle and personalizing systems (I have a thing for job systems), I think they’re pretty good. But I never got the new characters or the changes in Yuna. Also, the story was silly and not deep at all. Yeah, a lot of mini games and stuff… but that’s not what I wanted.

And what’s more important, the simple premise of Yuna searching for Tidus broke the great ending from FFX, and that’s outrageous.

People who added this item 555 Average listal rating (321 ratings) 8.1 IMDB Rating 0

Heavy Rain is one of the games that got me more astonished when playing it. It has a great level in definition and the animations are really great. This, along with the sceneries depicted, makes the game feel very real.

Day 24 - Favorite classic game

The Lost Vikings 2 - Super famicom and SNES

This is one of my favorite games of all time. It has a really impressive level design, well-made dialogues including a lot of humor, and a superb soundtrack that, along with the colorful, makes a great atmosphere. Many puzzles got me pretty stuck back in my childhood, and some of them still do it when I replay the game from time to time.

It was one of the games that showed me a fun side of the video games, the use your brain side, and now I really like this type of games.

Shadow of the Colossus - PlayStation 2

Every colossus battle

First there is the calm along the exploration, then you find the impressive colossus and start to think how can you get to it. And then, when you're doing it right, starts a piece of the magnificent soundtrack.

For me, this was a totally different level of epicness depicted in videogames.

Day 28 - Favorite game developer: Level-5

People who added this item 106 Average listal rating (55 ratings) 8.5 IMDB Rating 0

If any recent developer has taken my attention, this is Level-5. They seem to be on a very good path and haven't gone astray yet.

Some of the very good games I like from them are: the Layton franchise, Dragon Quest VIII and IX, Dark Chronicle

And some of the titles that I'm awaiting to play are: Ni no Kuni (PS3), Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright, Time Travelers or Crimson Shroud.
