"You play a good game boy, but the game is finished, now you die."

Now this movie is far from perfect and it has a ton of flaws. Certain aspects of this movie haven't aged well, the acting is pretty cheesy and the kid in this movie was annoying at times, but the movie makes up for it with it's creative storyline, bizarre visuals, a kick-ass villain and a complete shocker of an ending. It's not perfect and people who are very critical are likely to hate it, but I still enjoyed this movie and it's a good way to start the month.

Re-watch

"Telekinesis... thought to be the ability to move... or to cause changes... in objects... by force of the mind...?"

Since I read the book not too long ago, (Which was the first book I've read from Stephen King.) I thought I'd revisit this movie and see how it holds up. While it's only been a few years since I first watched this movie, I got more out of it this time since I had forgotten a few things from this movie and because after reading the book, I appreciate this movie more. Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie were both perfect for the roles they were given, there's a lot of tension and suspense which makes this movie effective when it comes to horror and the cinematography was fantastic. Not to mention that the ending still made me jump even though I knew it was coming this time.

While I haven't seen the TV movie which I'm probably not missing out on although I might watch it sometime for the hell of it, I feel like this adaptation is the only one that got it right. I'm not going to compare this to the remake too much because I already did that last year, but now I can say that it fails as an adaptation and it fails as a horror movie. The movie and a book was a product of it's time, so having the story take place in a modern setting doesn't make sense in my opinion. Now this movie isn't perfect. I can't say I liked John Travolta's character and he was miscast and a few scenes drag on for a bit too long, but other than that I think Brian De Palma did a great job with turning this into a movie and it wasn't an easy task considering that the book was written in a non-linear way.

"What the fuck are you doing, man? Come on, that's my dad!"
"CPR, man! I saw it on Baywatch, man!"

This was a decent movie. I wasn't expecting much from it, but it really was a good mix of horror and comedy. The story is kind of weak, but they still handle it well and they make the most out of it.

"The rest of your nine lives are going in one lump-sum."

This was a good anthology movie for the most part. The first story is the weakest one as it's not really scary, but it's still entertaining and it's interesting to see Christian Slater, Steve Buscemi and Juliane Moore all in the same segment. The second one is easily the best one mainly because George A. Romero is involved with it and he manages makes a story about a killer cat into something really creepy. The third one is decent and it has a good premise, but it doesn't really get interesting until near the end. I also wasn't sure how to feel about the scenes in between with the kid being locked in a cage. Those scenes were just weird. Overall it's a good anthology movie, but nothing too special.

"We came here from a dying world. We drift through the universe, from planet to planet, pushed on by the solar winds. We adapt and we survive. The function of life is survival."

I haven't seen any of the Invasion of the Body Snatchers movies and I decided to start with this one. I'll probably even watch all versions of this movie sooner or later just to compare. This was a really weird movie. It had an interesting story, a good cast and a really strange ending which is pretty much what makes this movie. I thought the majority of this movie was great, but that ending is what makes it stand out.

"You're so dumb you wouldn't know rabbit turds from Rice Krispies."

Before anyone asks, yes this is an actual line from the movie. Again this is one of those times where I have to thank MST3K for it's existence otherwise this movie would've been painful to watch. The acting was terrible, the writing was lazy and this movie was so poorly-made. Even as a b-movie it fails and while it comes close to being a so bad it's good movie, it's not unintentionally funny enough for it to qualify as one. All this movie should've been is a campy movie about giant spiders attacking, but the movie manages to even fuck that up and we don't get anything close to a spider invasion until the end of the movie. This movie was just awful and it's not worth watching as a standalone movie.

"The soil of a man's heart is stonier, Louis. A man grows what he can, and he tends it. 'Cause what you buy, is what you own. And what you own... always comes home to you."

This movie is pretty good and it comes close to being a great one, but it just misses the mark. It has a decent story and it's executed very well and this movie is even scary to some extent, but I think it starts to fall apart near the end of the movie. The problem with this movie is how well known the evil kid is in this movie, yet he only shows up near the end of the movie and he doesn't get nearly enough screen time despite all the build up towards him. He still delivers an impressive performance for such a young kid, but I wanted to see more of him in his evil form. I thought that was disappointing. It's still a solid movie and I'm glad I finally watched it, but it's not one of the best Stephen King movies.

Chopping Mall (1986)
October 5

"Look, I'm sorry if I made you angry, Linda."
"It's not you, Ferdy. I'm just not used to be chased around a mall in the middle of the night by killer robots."

This movie caught my attention just for the title alone which I thought was a decent pun for a horror movie, but unfortunately the title is also very misleading. You'd think a movie called Chopping Mall would be... um I don't know, a slasher movie, but no it's a movie about killer robots at a mall. The alternate title for this movie is Killbots which is a much more fitting title. Enough about that though, how does the movie stand on it's own? It's mildly entertaining, but the characters are neither likeable or unlikable, none of the kills are memorable and there's really nothing in this movie that stands out. It's just an average movie with a good title that turned out to be misleading.

"You polish them?"
"I'm sorry?"
"The mirrors. They're so clean."
"Oh, no, that's Gary. Gary Lewis. The fella who's been working here before you. He was completely obsessed with these damn mirrors. Spent the entire night cleaning them."

This movie was a nice surprise. I didn't really know anything about it going into it besides the fact that Kiefer Sutherland is in it and the movie I got was really entertaining. It had a very creative concept, some really disturbing death scenes and a good performance from Kiefer Sutherland. I really liked his character and that's what really makes this movie work as they could've easily had this movie just focus on the death scenes. It's a pretty good movie and it's a little bit underrated.

"Did I hear that code red or am I losing my shit?"

I should say that I was not expecting this movie to be anywhere near as great as 28 Days Later. I was just expecting it to be an entertaining zombie movie, but it barely works as just that. This movie does have it's interesting kills and the movie is never TOO boring, but the reason this movie doesn't work is because I didn't care about the characters. They aren't terrible characters, but I just didn't care about their fate and if they were going to live or not and the character development is what made the first movie great. Instead this movie just focuses on the zombie action. This whole movie felt like I was watching a weak episode of The Walking Dead that's stretched out to feature length and drags on for too long. I love zombie movies and there aren't too many of them that I don't like, but this is one of the few exceptions. After seeing this I think they should've just left the original movie alone and that it didn't really need a sequel.

"I refuse to say anything twice. Repetition is death... When you repeat something, you are reliving a moment, wasting it, severing it from the other end of your life. I believe only in new impressions, new stimuli, new life!"

This was a decent Roger Corman movie. It's nothing special today, but it's still a good dark comedy and it's definitely worth watching even if you're looking to kill an hour since it's very short.

"Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary, / Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore. / While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping, / As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door./ "'Tis some visitor," I muttered, "tapping at my chamber door. / Only this and nothing more."

I decided to end the night with another Roger Corman movie and I had a hell of a good time with this one. Vincent Price is still great as he always is and Peter Lorre and Boris Karloff does a great job with their respective roles too. It was also interesting to see a young Jack Nicholson before he was famous. While this movie is undeniably campy at times, that's what makes this movie so fun. It's got an interesting story, a good sense of humor and even though the special effects are dated I still thought they were cool. This was a great movie and it might be the best movie I've seen from Roger Corman so far. (Still deciding if this one or Tales of Terror is better.)

"I am a night bird. I am not much good in the daytime."

This is the best movie I've seen from Roman Polanski so far. This movie is just as funny as it was back then and there are certain parts of this movie that had me laughing hard. It is a great vampire movie that deserves it's cult status. Also my younger brother walked in right when the movie was starting and he wanted to watch it. I was surprised that he actually enjoyed watching it with me and a few days later he wanted to watch another horror movie with me.

The Dentist (1996)
October 8

"Three times a day, and no candy! Say it!"

This was a pretty underrated movie and the main reason this movie is so effective is because of the main character. Corbin Bernsen does a great job of playing a sadistic dentist and he is so fucked up that he makes the dentist from Little Shop of Horrors look normal. The dental scenes are so hard to watch and they really do a good job of showing how mentally unstable he is. It's close to being a great movie, but it kind of falls apart near the end and the cop characters kind of dragged this movie down as they weren't very interesting. Still this is a very good movie that I can easily recommend. Just don't watch it if you have an upcoming dentist appointment.

"Let's let our friend here rest in peace... while he can."

This was a decent remake, but at the same time I can't help calling it weak in comparison to the original. It does have some good acting as Peter Cushing is as great as usual when it comes to monster movies and Christopher Lee was good as the monster although he's nowhere near as great as Boris Karloff was. I also liked the way they told the story in this version and I did like the technical aspects of this movie, but in the end this movie didn't leave a huge impression on me. It's good in it's own right, but as a remake it's hard not to compare it to the original.

"But you only shot him once, right? Maybe you gotta shoot him more times. Like four- or six- maybe you gotta shoot him six times?"

This movie delivers exactly what it promises. It's a really fun slasher movie that does a good job of paying homage to the classic slasher movies, it has a really good villain and it even pokes fun of the cliches of the genre at times. It's definitely one of the better slasher movies in recent years and I could see myself watching it again.

So when they started riffing in this episode I was like "Hey this movie isn't too bad, but what does this have to do with giant leeches and what's up with the setting this movie takes place in?" and it wasn't until it ended that I realized that it was a serial they were riffing and that it wasn't the real show. Anyways, this particular movie wasn't bad, but it wasn't good either. It does have it's moments and for the most part it's cheesy in a good way, but the characters and the dialogue was dull and the actual giant leech aspect of the movie is where I got the most enjoyment out of it. The riffing for this movie though was hilarious and it's one of the funniest episodes of MST3K I've seen so far.

"He went for a little walk! You should have seen his face!"

So my younger brother asked if he could watch a scary movie with me and since I didn't want to pick something too scary, I chose this one. I tried watching it a couple days ago, but I wasn't in the right mood for it then. Nearly 15 minutes into the movie my brother said he wanted to go upstairs because he was tired and because he thought the movie was boring. After I finished watching the movie all I can say is that I don't blame him. This movie starts off really promising, but it keeps getting more dull as this movie goes on. Boris Karloff is great as always and this movie does have a good story, but this movie just goes nowhere and it just doesn't have that suspense or tension that the other Universal monster movies have. Now this movie does have quite a bit to like about and I was so close to giving it a 7/10, but since the movie left me underwhelmed I just can't justify that rating. It's not too bad, but it's easily the weakest Universal monster movie I've seen.

After watching The Mummy I wanted to watch a movie that was guaranteed to entertain because how can you go wrong with a movie called Dog Soldiers? This movie definitely delivers what it promises. It's a really fun movie, it doesn't take itself too seriously and it's a strong directorial debut from Neil Marshall. I hope that he goes back to horror movies instead of typical action movies because this movie and The Descent actually rely on creativity while Doomsday and Centurion just rely on action.

"Yeah, he's a professor... OF BEING A DOG! OOOH, FACED!... Scratch moded!"

I wasn't really expecting much from this movie since the first movie I saw from Eli Roth which was Hostel failed to impress me. I was expecting this to be the same kind of movie as Hostel because of it, but instead I got a different kind of movie. I thought it would just be a generic cabin in the woods type of movie and while it kind of is, there is a bit of a twist to it. The characters have some likability to them and I really liked Eli Roth's cameo and I just really liked how they handled this plot. It's far from being the clever horror classic it wants to be, but it's a good effort and it's better than I thought it would be.

"I will feast on your soul!"
"Feast on this, motherfucker."

I have been on and off about this remake before I saw it. At first I thought it was a bad idea and that The Evil Dead doesn't need a remake, then when I actually saw a trailer I thought it looked awesome and then when it came out the reviews kind of kept me from seeing it and I was also skeptical about this movie. After seeing it I thought it was good, but it is very flawed. It does have some really good gore effects and this movie does get credit for actually using practical effects instead of CGI and in a way it captures the spirit of The Evil Dead very well, but I think the biggest problem is that it does take itself too seriously. While the original Evil Dead movies were dark, they still had a sense of humor which helped break the tension and crazyness. In this movie though there is barely any humor in this movie and that why this movie doesn't work as well as it should. As much as I didn't like how toned-down Army of Darkness was, I can still say that I prefer that movie over this one. It is still good as far as remakes go, but it could've been better.

"I desire the SOUL of Christine Brown. We will FEAST upon it while she festers in the grave!"

This movie doesn't deserve some of the hate it gets. It's not Sam Raimi's best movie, but it doesn't try to be anything it's not. It's a very effective horror movie with some really creepy visuals and it does have some humor. It's one of those cases where PG-13 horror actually works (Although for the record I saw the unrated version, but there's probably not that much of a difference.) and it's better than it's credited for. "No one's going to believe me, cause I'm a kid, and they never listen to kid."

This movie was just OK. It's certainly a lot better and more competent than The Giant Spider Invasion, but I still wouldn't call it good. The movie had it's comedic moments, but the laughs are very inconsistent and the action really started to get repetitive and boring after a while. In fact from what I remember, there were more spiders being killed that there were people which made the characters seem invincible. The characters aren't very great either and they are pretty much cliche character stereotypes. While this movie is entertaining at times, it's just not as fun as it could've been.

"If I do something bad, will you still love me?"

This Stephen King movie tends to be written off as average, but I don't really agree with that. Now I have yet to read the novel that this was based on and it's possible that this movie may seem weak in comparison to the book, but for what it is, it worked very well. Drew Barrymore was amazing in this movie as the girl who has this supernatural power, but she doesn't know her own strength with this role. Another part of what makes this movie work is the father/daughter relationship is really well done and the characters is what makes this movie so effective. I don't want to give too much away just for anyone who hasn't seen this movie, but all I will say is that the last 10 minutes of this movie is scary and awesome at the same time. It's one of the most underrated Stephen King adaptations I've seen so far and it's much better than the scores make it out to be.

This was much better than the original. Unlike the 1932 version, this one actually has tension to it and the acting manages to be better in this movie. Peter Cushing is still great as usual and Christopher Lee manages to deliver a great performance without even saying one damn word. Cronos (1993)
October 14

"In 1536, fleeing from the Inquisition, the alchemist Uberto Fulcanelli disembarked in Veracruz, Mexico. Appointed official watchmaker to the Viceroy, Fulcanelli was determined to perfect an invention which would provide him with the key to eternal life. He was to name it... the Cronos device. 400 years later, one night in 1937, part of the vault in a building collapsed. Among the victims was a man of strange skin, the color of marble in moonlight. His chest mortally pierced, his last words... Suo tempore. This was the alchemist."

This was a pretty effective horror movie and that device was very creepy due to how mysterious it is, but it has this one problem that keeps it from being great. It's not a frequent problem, but it happens enough for it to be grating. That would be how this movie would sometimes go back and forth from English language to Spanish. The biggest offender is Ron Perlman who is one of the two English speaking characters in the movie and he talks to one of the foreign people in English and yet somehow the people who speak Spanish understand what he's saying. It's not a big enough problem for it to ruin the movie for me, but it was still very distracting and it's just a pet peeve of mine when movies do that. Just pick a language and stick with it throughout at least 95% of the movie. I also thought it had the potential to be scarier and I think having the characters more fleshed out would've benefitted this movie more, but it's still a pretty good horror movie.

Ugh, why did I watch this movie? This was a very stupid movie and it's pretty much The Blair Witch Project meets the world wide web. Hell, it has all the same problems that The Blair Witch Project had. The characters are unlikable, most of the movie is nothing but yelling and it's not scary. Now some might say that the characters aren't supposed to be likeable, but if this movie was well-written and all it wouldn't be so much of a problem. I will say that I get what this movie is going for. I do like the risks it takes by having the whole movie take place on a computer screen and there were a couple clever things this movie had to offer, but all the problems kill any sort of satire that this movie has to offer. All this movie has to say is that teens are stupid which isn't an original observation and it's really just more ironic than anything because this movie is making fun of it's target audience. Overall this was a terrible found footage movie and it's one of the reasons why this sub-genre of horror gets so much ridicule.

"I love wolves. because they love deeply, but they don't know how to express it, and they're often very violent and, quite frankly, murder the things that they love, and inside of the wolf is this beautiful heart. And yeah it's misguided, and yeah occasionally it murders things and this little wolf was so cute, it reminded me of you, honestly, You know, that moment I scared you in the woods. and it was - There was murder in your eyes, but it was like, it was baby murder, you're not ready to accept that yet, and I want to encourage you to embrace your inner wolf, so take the wolf and enjoy it, and more importantly, take the knife, and don't be afraid to murder it, because when you stick a knife in something, and you gut it and you really dig inside, I don't know man, there's all this beautiful stuff. and um... I got a little surprise for you in there. See ya soon, Buddy!"

I decided to watch this movie because it was a Netflix Instant Project recommendation and had I known this was a found footage movie, I wouldn't have watched it after Unfriended. Fortunately it wasn't too long until this movie was able to interest me and while I knew there was something wrong with the character right from the start, Mark Duplass does a great job of selling that role. He's also very funny at the same time and he was just a very interesting character overall. I thought this was a great found footage movie because it's far more realistic and believable than something like Unfriended, Cloverfield or Paranormal Activity because it's something that could actually happen which makes it much more effective. This movie is not going to appeal to the typical movie-goer because as far as scares go, it's more scary on a subtle level than it is with jumpscares, so people who are looking for those will be disappointed unless they love fake-out scares. I was kind of annoyed by the few fake-out scares this movie has, but at the same time they were funny, so they didn't bother me too much. The ending is kind of predictable and I saw it coming, but what really makes it work is that while I knew he just used Aaron for a snuff film, I didn't expect him to have a ton of tapes and CD's of his previous victims. So like I said, this movie is not for everyone, but if you're looking for a found footage movie that's more than a gimmick then you'll probably enjoy it.

While it's not the best movie in the series, it's a whole lot better than the last two sequels. This movie has the reputation as one of the scariest movies of all time and in a way I agree. To me this movie is more scary on a psychological level and it doesn't get under my skin nearly as something like Halloween, but I still think this is a fantastic movie that is well-written and it's the best horror movie to involve satanism. I like the majority of James Wan's movies, but this was just stupid. It had a ridiculous premise, over the top acting and it wasn't scary at all. Even Child's Play was a better movie than this. While I wasn't a fan of that movie and I prefer the majority of the sequels over the first one, but at least in that one Chucky was at least threatening. Here though the dummy in this movie is about as scary as Howdy Doody. Now this movie does have some interesting ideas and despite how stupid the plot is they did execute it as best as they could, but I just couldn't take it seriously and I find it hard to believe that the same James Wan who made The Conjuring, Insidious and Saw also made this scare-free mess.

"I think she bit it."
"She who?"
"Dawn."
"A baby bit into your finger?"

So today was the Canadian election and after nearly a decade we finally get a new prime minister. While everyone else was voting, here I was watching a stupid Canadian movie about a girl with a toothed vagina. While this movie does have a laugh every once in a while, it tries way too hard to be funny and disturbing and it just doesn't work. It's just one of those movies that confuses disturbing with disgusting. It's not a terrible movie, but it's just so boring and I should've just stayed away from this film.

"You're crazy."
"Yeah, I know. Crazy for you."

This was a very fun movie. Even though it's mainly just a cash-in on movies like Halloween and Friday the 13th, I still thought it was a really well-done slasher movie. I think what makes this movie stand out is the gore effects done by the great Tom Savini. While it's mostly a standard slasher, it's still a really fun movie and it's one of the better movies that tried to cash-in on Friday the 13th.

Hey, how about some interviews? You know, students react to the tragedy on campus."
"Okay. I am saddened, and moved by the tragic..."
"This was someone's life Paul. Did you even spend one minute thinking about that?"
"No, I didn't. But because of my story, three-thousand five-hundred students will. I think that's enough to help me sleep at night."

This was an average movie that tries to cash in on the teen slashers like Scream. This movie had some decent kills and a few good laughs like the cop character who's a Pam Grier wanna-be, but in the end there's nothing to special about it. I think the worst thing about this movie is that they were able to get Robert Englund, but he's barely in the movie. He's just in this one scene and that's it. He was the only reason I saw this movie in the first place, but in the middle of the film I thought that maybe he would be the killer, but unfortunately the killer is Rebecca Gayheart's character. While I didn't guess that she would be the killer, it was still a stupid ending because she is such an uninteresting character and it would've been much cooler if Robert Englund was the killer. Sure it would've been obvious, but at least it would've been a better ending.

"Suppose what your faith has said is essentially correct. Suppose there is a universal mind controlling everything, a god willing the behavior of every subatomic particle. Well, every particle has an anti-particle, its mirror image, its negative side. Maybe this universal mind resides in the mirror image instead of in our universe as we wanted to believe. Maybe he's anti-god, bringing darkness instead of light."

This was a very enjoyable movie, but it's not John Carpenter's best work. It does start off slow with a dragged out opening credits sequence, but it does really pick up from there. It does have an interesting premise and for the most part it's executed well, but I think that there's so much more that could've been done with it. It's still a solid movie, but like I said it's not John Carpenter's best work.

"Eloquent, Sheriff. You make us look like an inbred mining community."
"We are an inbred mining community, Ben."

This movie is a prime example on how modern slasher films should be made. It's a fun movie that never takes itself too seriously, has a ton of gore and it just delivers what it promises. I haven't seen the original movie yet, but it's a really good remake and I doubt the original is as good as this one.

"Well I guess that's what brains look like... Sort of like... Lasagna... Kind of... Okay, I'll shut up now."

This remake is better than the reputation it has due to it being a remake of a beloved classic horror movie. It wasn't a remake that needed to happen, but the good thing about this one is that it doesn't try to copy the original the original movie and it has some new elements like R. Lee Ermey's character. While he mostly plays the same character he usually does, he still does a good job of playing that character. For the most part this movie serves it's purpose with what it wants to be and while it's not as good as the original, it's good in it's own right.

"Why don't we crawl in the sack?"
"Why don't you fix the fire?"
"There's no wood."
"We're in a forest!"

This movie is like a lazy dog, it's boring and neutered. The kills are very tame and they barely have any blood and the movie is boring to watch because of it. This movie is like a PG-13 sequel to an R rated movie, except it still has an R rating because of the MPAA's standards with other things. I doubt this movie would've been much better if it added the gorier kills to the final cut, but at least it would've made it slightly more interesting. This is one of the worst movies in the series and if I ever do see the other sequels I'm pretty sure it will only get worse from here.

"You unlock this door with the key of imagination. Beyond it is another dimension: a dimension of sound, a dimension of sight, a dimension of mind. You're moving into a land of both shadow and substance, of things and ideas. You've just crossed over into... the Twilight Zone."

I haven't seen that much of the show and before I saw this movie I only saw the first two episodes, but I promised to myself that by this month I would watch the episodes that these segments were based on before I see the movie. Before I get to the actual movie and talk about how it compares to what I've seen from this show, I'll just do each segment individually first.

Time's Out: The original episode this one was based off of was the weakest episode,(Which was still great by the way.) so it was nice to see that this segment was an improvement. I like how it was mostly loosely based on the original as it adds more twists to the character and I thought this episode was more effective of making us dislike him. It's a really great start to this movie and it's still a great segment despite the tragedy that happened behind the scenes. 10/10

Kick the Can: This is the weakest segment out of all of them. I still loved it and it was very well-made, but when it ended I just ended up wanting more and I think Spielberg could've done better with this one. 9/10

It's a Good Life: This is my favorite segment out of them all. It's even better than the original episode and I thought the kid was much more creepier in this version. I also loved the insanity and special effects this movie had to offer and this was overall the scariest segment. I loved every minute of this one and Joe Dante did a great job with this one. 10/10

Nightmare at 20,000 Feet: The original is the best episode I've seen of the show so far, so it's no surprise that this segment made it in the movie. This is easily the second best segment as it's really scary and yet again it has great special effects. I can't say that it's better than the episode, but it's at least on the same level. 10/10

This is probably an unpopular opinion, but I love this movie just as much as I love the show. I thought it captured the feel of the show very well and I thought it had it's benefits of being a movie as it was able to have stuff like darker storytelling. All of these segments were great and even the weakest one was still really good. I loved this movie and I don't think the tragic death of Vic Morrow and the two kids should ruin the quality of this movie.

"They had this look in their eyes, totally cold, animal. I think they were young Republicans."

This was a fun movie. It isn't anything special, but it had a decent cast, some funny moments and I had a good time with it and I really wasn't expecting anything more from this movie besides that. It's not one that will stick out in my mind, but it's a decent time-waster.

"Is this your wife? What a lovely throat."

This movie is just as good as it's reputation makes it out to be and it's the best version of Dracula I have seen in a movie. Now this was made in the silent era, so because you couldn't hear what the actors were saying, they had to act in facial expressions and body language and in that sense of the word the acting was great, but the actor who stands out is obviously Max Shreck. He is part of what makes this movie work and the chilling atmosphere of this movie also helps. In some ways it's dated, but in most respects it holds up very well and it is easily a horror classic.

"In my practice, I've seen how people have allowed their humanity to drain away. Only it happened slowly instead of all at once. They didn't seem to mind... All of us - a little bit - we harden our hearts, grow callous. Only when we have to fight to stay human do we realize how precious it is to us, how dear."

Now that I've watched the original, I still think that the remake is the superior version. Don't get me wrong this movie is well-written and entertaining, but it just falls short of being a great movie. This movie is still a classic and I can see why people would love this movie, but in the end I prefer the darker feel of the 1978 version and the ending in that movie was better.

This was a very interesting anthology movie. Just like The Twilight Zone Movie, I'm going to review the separate segments first.

Dumplings: This is probably the weakest one out of the three. It's still very solid and it has a weird storyline, but when you compare them to the other two it's nothing too special. 8/10

Cut: While I didn't love this one either, I still admired the overall story of this segment and I really thought it was well-made. It's definitely an interesting one, but it's not my favorite segment. 8/10

Box: It's no surprise that Takashi Miike's segment would be my favorite out of all of them. It's not perfect, but I thought it was the scariest segment out of all of them, it was well-acted and it had a lot of interesting ideas. It's the best segment out of all of them and it was a great way to end the movie. 9/10

So this was a pretty solid anthology movie overall. It's not the best of it's kind, but it's definitely interesting and it does have a lot of creative ideas. It's a movie that I would probably watch again if not only for Takashi Miike's segment.

"See, the bright light... it ain't heaven, son. It's just a muzzle flare."

I thought this movie would be interesting because it's a movie featuring Nazi zombies, but no it was really boring. The characters were not interesting in the slightest, the dialogue was weak and there was barely any zombie action. Now I get that this movie was going for something different, but this movie fails at trying to be a character-driven movie. This movie is about Nazi zombies for crying out loud, have fun with it. This movie isn't the worst thing I've ever seen as it had a few good aspects and it was a little interesting at times, but for the most part it was an uninspired movie that isn't as fun as it should've been. I'm glad Dead Snow exists because that movie is everything that this one isn't.

"Yeah, they're dead. They're all messed up."

This was a decent remake, but it is nowhere near as good as the original. I think the best thing about this movie was how different Barbara was in this movie. In the original she was pretty wimpy, but in this version she's a strong woman who can fight for herself. Everything else in this movie was good enough, but I feel like most of this movie had room for improvement. One of the problems I had is that besides Barbara, the characters really aren't that sympathetic and I just didn't think they were that interesting. Another problem I had is that this movie felt all too familiar. Yes it's a remake so of course they have to make it similar to the original, but it felt so identical to the original that I felt like I could've been watching the original. Also this is more of a minor problem, but I think the gore effects could've been much better. They were fine for the most part, but I just feel like that if they could get Tom Savini to direct it then I feel like he should've done the special effects too as it would've suited his vision better. In the end it's a decent zombie movie in it's own terms, but it falls short as a remake and I think it relied a bit too much on the original's success while the Dawn of the Dead remake managed to be it's own movie despite having the same scenario. So, I'm glad I watched this movie, but I probably won't watch it again.

"What is that word you're thinking? What is empathy?... So if I have felt pain I should be able to identify with others who feel pain."

This movie was weird and I don't really mean that in a good way. The main problem is how the movie is executed. The movie is mostly not very interesting and this movie feels like it takes itself too seriously and not serious enough at the same time. The acting was alright for the most part as the kids did a good enough job with the material they were given, but Christopher Reeve's perfomance was stiff... I mean weak... I mean wooden... I mean... ah fuck it, you know what I mean. This movie has it's moments that work and it started off so promising, but the final product it just a confused mess that doesn't know what it wants to be. Even though I wasn't the biggest fan of They Live, at least that movie had some memorable parts. This movie just has nothing that stands out and so far it's the weakest John Carpenter movie I've seen.

Re-watch

"Whatever you do... don't fall asleep."

This movie is just as scary as it was the first time I saw it. While this series has spawned a few good sequels, none of them have ever matched the same level of greatness that this movie has. Even though they made Wes Craven change the ending, even that still works and in a way I'm glad they made it into a series as the concept was so creative that there had to be at least one sequel to it.
