Movies the giraffe watched in 2014: September

Sort by: Showing 30 items
Decade: Rating: List Type:
The breakdown: 30 movies watched - 24 via Netflix instant, 2 in the theatre, and 4 on DVD; of those 21 were first views, 9 were re-watches, and they came from the following decades: 50s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s, and 2010s.

Well, it appears that having no focuses at all yielded excellent results productivity-wise as I managed to watch a film a day on average. Of course it also helped that Netflix removed 9 films in all from my queue, all of which I managed to watch before they left. I managed to make it to the theatre twice this month, on the first and the 30th so that I ended up in the same place I began (and come to think of it, the films I started with were connected by their director, and the films I ended with had a shared contributor as well - director in one and actor in the other...interesting).

I'd intended to forego any horror this month, but about half the films Netflix chose to remove were horror and most of those I'd already planned to watch next month. Kind of annoyed about that, but on the upside that leaves more room for other films I can squeeze into my annual Horrorfest.

Best new-to-me film for September: All About Eve / Infernal Affairs (tie)
Best hidden gems: The Double, Journey to the West, The Signal, The Dark Half, Mr. Mom, Silver Streak ...this was a really good month for those
Worst film: The Keep

After watching Mood Indigo I decided I'd follow it up with more Gondry by checking out this documentary he made with Noam Chomsky. Basically it's him having a couple of long conversations with Chomsky, but instead of the camera watching them the whole time Gondry creates animated sequences illustrating what they're discussing. It's interesting enough, but not something I was deeply invested in. The animation was well done but not especially impressive to me, and I definitely wouldn't watch it again simply because overall it's not my taste.

Sling Blade (1997)
Re-watch - Sept. 2nd

Last November I watched the short film that spawned this one, and was left with an urge to revisit Sling Blade. So when I saw Netflix had added it I dove right in. And it's still an excellent little film. Thornton disappears into his character so completely you can't even recognize him most of the time. And yet as impressive as his performance is throughout he's nearly upstaged by Dwight Yoakum who goes for broke as the villain, a slippery snake forever coiled up waiting to strike. I'd almost forgotten just how believably evil he is in this. The rest of the cast is stellar too, and I dig how the story is a simple one of friendship and how difficult it is to return to the world after a long time being locked away from it. Watching it again now I like it even more than I did back in the late '90s, and I don't think I'll go as long without watching it again.

Actually I'd tried to watch this last week & was too tired to watch all of it. So I tried again today and it was decent. My co-worker friend loaned it to me in exchange for my copy of Duel, and in my eyes he got the better end of the deal. But hey, I got to watch something I'd never heard of & was consistently entertained. It's far from the best anime I've ever seen, and I felt like it borrowed a bit from films that preceded it (a little Akira here, a little Lensman there) but it was also far from the worst anime I've seen. Pretty middle of the road honestly, but I thought it was worth watching once.

Mr. Mom (1983)
Re-watch - Sept. 3rd

Michael Keaton double feature

So it turns out Netflix also added two of my favorite Michael Keaton movies this month, and I immediately decided to watch them back-to-back. And that turned out to be a good choice as both films have a couple of similar themes running through them. I haven't watched Mr. Mom in a long time, so I was pleasantly surprised to see Christopher Lloyd was in it (albeit briefly). And I'm pretty sure this film was my introduction to Jeffrey Tambor. Anyway, it's still a lot of fun from start to finish and having been a stay-at-home dad for a while I can better appreciate it now even if some of the situations are somewhat ridiculous (but hey, that's comedy). My only gripe is that for a film that takes place in Detroit there sure is a lack of ethnicity on display throughout (I can think of four characters in the whole thing that aren't white, and none of them have names either).

Just a thought: Pretty sure this is the first film I enjoyed that John Hughes wrote, and I never realized he was responsible before now.

Michael Keaton double feature

I loved this movie when it came out, still quote parts of it from time to time, and will continue to defend it for the foreseeable future. I've adjusted my rating from 9 to 8 because as comedies go it falls a little short of greatness for me now, but it's still a fun movie overall. Watching four Michael Keatons is highly entertaining, and he pulls off the tough task of making sure the audience can tell which one we're watching at any given time. There are plenty of memorable moments & lines, and some parts still make me laugh hysterically. There's some heart in it too, as well as a good message. It may not be quite as great as Groundhog Day, but it's definitely underrated.

I've never understood why people hate Multiplicity. If it's because they assumed it was about cloning & refused to see it, then that's their loss. If it's because they wanted Oscar-worthy cinema, they were clearly mistaken by looking here. The film makes no attempts to be the greatest thing ever, and as comedies go it's very satisfying. Perhaps it was simply ahead of its time. Here's hoping it eventually overcomes its reputation.

Supposedly this is Van Damme's best film, in which case I can continue ignoring all the others I've never seen. Dude's not much of an actor, but I won't deny he does have some talent physically. The whole plot is predictable the moment the characters are established, and if it wasn't entertaining despite that fact it wouldn't have been worth sitting through really. Fortunately I did get caught up in the proceedings, so there was some fun to be had. But I wouldn't call this essential viewing.

Just a thought: I really wanted Chong Li to go off on everyone about how he went up against Bruce Lee in Enter the Dragon and they all suck by comparison.

The Machine (2014)
First viewing - Sept. 7th

The trailer for this one intrigued me when I saw it last year, so when it popped up on Netflix I figured I'd give it a look. And for about half to two-thirds of the film's runtime it wound up being a smart sci-fi/action flick that worked well. Unfortunately the ending devolves into a cliche resolution and reveals the film never had anything truly worthwhile to say, which was pretty disappointing. I felt like they forgot where they were going with it and just ended it. Maybe the DVD extras include a better, alternate ending?

If I recall correctly this popped up as a recommendation after I watched Sleepless Night. It's a decent thriller that slowly unfolds to reveals all of its pieces. The cast is solid and I was pretty well entertained. Doubt I'd go out of my way to watch it again, but worth watching once anyway.

Just a thought: In several ways this brought The Vanishing to my mind.

The kiddo wanted me to watch this with her, and since I hadn't seen it since the early '90s I was happy to oblige. And apart from some of the effects that haven't held up well over time, the film as a whole is still as solidly entertaining as I recalled. A bit ridiculous perhaps, but still fun and I like the characters.

All that said, I'm rather reluctant to explore its sequels and can't recall anymore if I've even seen them before. Hopefully I can distract her away from them so I don't have to find out.

Another movie that's solidly entertaining but doesn't have much of anything to say. Is it too much to hope for some depth from a film? The acting is excellent for the most part, and the score is well done, but the story is obvious in some places and builds to an ending where I shrugged and wandered off. It's the sort of film that I'd never recommend no matter how much I liked it anyway though, but with the cast & all I was really hoping for more out of it. Ah well.

Infernal Affairs has been sitting unwatched on my shelves for a few years now, so I decided to finally dive into it. And it did not disappoint. There's so much going on in this film I can hardly begin to comment on it sufficiently, and it unfolds in ways that aren't easily anticipated. After the above string of let-downs this film won me over big time. And best of all since it's in my collection I can revisit it in the future.

Oh yeah, and now I can finally check out The Departed. I'm doubtful it'll measure up though.

Silver Streak (1976)
Re-watch - Sept. 10th

It had been far too long since I'd last watched Silver Streak, which paid off well as I got plenty out of it this time around. It's smart, it's funny, it's focused, the timing works throughout, and while I'd forgotten some parts others proved unforgettable. It's still one of my favorites.

Interesting how things are connected: A few hours after I watched this, the news came that Richard Kiel (who plays a thug here) died.

My co-worker friend hooked me up with this interesting little sci-fi flick, and it turned out to be quite a pleasant surprise. This is definitely one of those less-said-the-better cases, so I'll simply encourage you to check it out if you're into sci-fi and leave it at that.

I read the book this film was adapted from not too long ago, so when it popped up on Netflix I figured I'd see how it measured up. It definitely hits the book's main moments, and more or less captures the spirit of the novel. The main reason it's worth watching is for James McAvoy's performance which is quite something to behold. On the downside, the film flies by so fast I have a feeling those who never read the book would notice some gaps that were missing along the way. I know I was filling in details from the book in my head a few times. And the novel's main secondary narrative thread is mostly abandoned, which was pretty disappointing. To be fair, that thread makes more sense in a written format than a visual one, but it's such a key part that I'm surprised it was given such short shrift here. Still, this was worth watching once.

I doubt there's much I can say about All About Eve that hasn't already been said elsewhere & better. Suffice it to say, then, that the only thing missing here was that magical perfect 10 feeling, and I especially appreciated the fact that there were so many well-formed and strong females present here.

After being horribly disappointed by The Keep I wanted something short-ish to watch that would be more entertaining. And for whatever crazy reason, I picked this. And while I was more entertained by this than The Keep, it was still somewhat lame. The animation looked terrible at least half the time, the music was awful, and the only character I really liked was the wolf (thanks in large part to my undying love for Patrick Warburton). There are some really funny jokes here, but they're so scattered. I don't know, maybe I should've watched this with the kiddo instead, but now that I've seen it it's unlikely I'd encourage her to give it a shot. It had potential, but never fully realized it & thus wasn't worth watching in the end.

New Stephen Chow? Yes please. This film starts off going full throttle, and had it ended after the first series of events were wrapped up I would've instantly given it a perfect score. Instead, the film moves beyond that to follow our protagonist on the titular journey rather than resolving itself to be a short. Which is fine, and the whole film was solidly entertaining, but I felt like the rest never quite achieved the awe-inspiring effect of the opening. It's entirely possible that future viewings will result in a different rating, but on a first outing it fell just shy of crossing the line into greatness for me. That said, I'll gladly revisit it any time.

Saw this pop up on Instant last night, and decided to end the month with it which meant I went out on a high note. Richard Ayoade is definitely a director worth keeping up with, a conclusion I'd already come to after Submarine and reinforced after watching this. I loved the wicked sense of humor running throughout the film, and despite said humor I think it's a bit misleading to call The Double a comedy. You could call it a dark comedy I guess, but it's really more of a thriller overall. Eisenberg does a fine job here, the rest of the cast is solid, the score is fantastic, and it's sure to be the sort of film I'll need to revisit a few times to fully appreciate. I'm on the fence as to whether it actually crossed the line of greatness for me, but it came damn close.

Interesting how things are connected: I swear it wasn't my intent, but I wound up watching two films with Richard Ayoade involved in them in the same day.

Mood Indigo (2013)
First viewing - Sept. 1st

Kicked off September with a trip to Drafthouse to see one of my most anticipated films from this year, and it didn't disappoint. Gondry fills the film with astounding creations and visuals to the point I was left feeling like my own world is severely lacking & needs him to give it a makeover. The story is a good one too, mostly unpredictable and full of interesting characters. And while I dug the whole thing, something about the ending left me feeling like it fell short somehow. As such it failed to cross that elusive line into Greatness for me, but it's still worth watching & I'd recommend it. I think maybe I should watch it again in a year or so & see how I feel about it then.

Just a thought: At the very least I'd like to have a working replica of Colin's doorbell.

Took the kiddo to see The Boxtrolls after having her watch the trailer for it & she got excited about it. Turns out it wasn't entirely the best choice as I think she spent at least 1/3 of the film scared by the characters (the main villain especially), but by the end she decided she liked it & was talking about it the whole way home. She did say she's never watching it again at one point during the film though, so we'll see if that holds true. Heh.

I loved it, which makes Laika's record 3 for 3. The animation is stellar, the whole look & feel of the film is just amazing, there's some excellent humor throughout, and the story is one that hasn't been done to death told in a way that feels fresh. Best of all, it's populated with characters that are mostly unattractive in any conventional sense which you can't get away with in your typical Hollywood film. Fortunately there's nothing typical here.

And now I'm itching to revisit Coraline and Paranorman, though we'll see whether I watch them with the kiddo whenever I do.

An interesting film but definitely not a fun watch. The events here seem real enough, the cast disappears into their roles (probably helps I don't know any actor present), and it's a thought-provoking tale. I can't imagine being in the shoes of anyone on the boat, and no more often than I get on boats I guess this is as close as I'll ever come to experiencing something like this. I expected to be more emotionally affected than I was (not sure whether that's the film's flaw or my own though), and this is one of those films where despite its excellent execution I'll never have an interest in watching it a second time. Worthy of a look and a recommendation though.

Well, so much for my intentions of skipping horror movies altogether this month. On the 17th I looked to see what from my queue would be leaving on Oct. 1st, and found to my dismay 8 films on the chopping block and half of those are horror flicks. There really needs to be a rule that Netflix isn't allowed to remove any horror movies during September & has to hold onto them until the end of October. Jerks.

And it's especially annoying given how perfect this one would've been for my annual Horrorfest. It's fun, it's riveting, it's got mostly great effects, the story and acting is solid...and the whole thing is basically Stephen King's version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. It's amusing to me how much I enjoyed it too, because I was big into Stephen King during junior high & high school but The Dark Half was the book I didn't finish (doubtful I read more than 50 pages) & decided to take an extended break from his writings (I still haven't read another of his books since then). Unsure whether it's his doing or Romero's writing & direction here, but there was never a dull moment. And that ending, man, I loved it.

It fell a little short of being great, but I'd gladly watch it again and am pleased I finally sat down with it.

How does a Michael Mann film with Scott Glenn & Gabriel Byrne in it suck so horribly? I started watching it on the 19th, fell asleep partway through, then finished the rest on the 21st and would've been better off not finishing it at all. The plot is full of holes thanks largely to some undeveloped ideas, there's no on-screen chemistry between the characters, and the pacing is so slow it's no wonder I fell asleep. Not even making fun of it kept me going. Ugh.

I first saw this in the theatre with my parents and my grandma, and it's safe to say I hadn't seen it again until now. Turns out I was not only fine with having not seen it in so long, but my rating was accurate despite the fact I could only remember one scene in the entire thing. It's mildly amusing & there's enough going on that it held my attention, plus as a father I connected with it somewhat, but there's not much to recommend it. It's not especially funny, clearly not memorable given my experience with it, the emotional side doesn't run deep at all, and really I was left wondering why it wasn't a TV show instead. Oh wait, I think that was called My Two Dads. Or Full House. Anyway, on the upside I can now stop wondering whether it was better or worse than I vaguely recalled.

Believe it or not, this was my 2nd or 3rd time ever watching this one. And I like it well enough, Coppola's decision to include the book's narrative structure works well, the cast is mostly solid, the visuals are excellent, and it's consistently entertaining. The only trouble for me is that at this point I'm so familiar with the story that there are no real surprises here, which leaves me with a ho-hum feeling at the end of it. Plus I still think Keanu was miscast which kinda irks me. So yeah, not a favorite, but made well enough I don't regret the time spent revisiting it. That said, I doubt I'd revisit it again.

Double-header Double Feature

Since the only two baseball movies in my queue were slated to leave at the same time I figured it made perfect sense to pair them up. And honestly they wound up being very complementary, far moreso than I'd anticipated. It was a nice balance, having a male team and a female team as the focus, a drama and a comedy, and both framed to varying degrees by world wars. And I'd put them both on equal footing too, as it turns out.

In the case of this film, I've long been aware of the facts in the case of the Chicago Black Sox in a general sense but not on a deep enough level as to make this film remotely boring. It helps that it's all so well put together, giving us time to get to know the characters & their motivations and letting us go through their experience without pushing through it too quickly. It never quite crosses that elusive line of greatness, but it's definitely worth watching.

Just a thought: Movies are the only way I can watch baseball.

Double-header Double Feature

My long-time followers & friends around here have probably picked up by now on the fact that I have a tendency to avoid over-hyped films, and this was no exception. When it came out I was only mildly interested, but then everyone went on & on about it until I was turned away from it. Fortunately these days I don't hear much talk about it anymore, so I figured I'd finally give it a look. And yeah, it was worth watching. I liked the characters, dug the story, and was pleased all around. Much like Eight Men Out I wouldn't go so far as to call it great, but it was definitely better than I'd anticipated. I was especially impressed by the casting of Lynn Cartwright as older Dottie...she really looks like Geena Davis might some day. And man, Jon Lovitz gets some big laughs during his brief screen time, which reminded me how much I love that guy.

So yeah, if like me you've put this one off, you might give it a look.

Interesting how things are connected: Didn't realize it when I picked these two films to watch back-to-back, but both are based on real events and have David Strathairn in a major role.

This film wasn't at all on my radar until some fellow Listalites pointed it out to me. I actually tried watching it once before last year but wasn't in the right mood & switched it off about 15 minutes in. On this particular night though I was ready for it...well, mostly. Not sure what I was expecting from Don't Look Now, but when it ended I was a bit disappointed. I was engaged throughout the film as it rolled along, liked the characters that mattered OK, and was curious to see where it'd end up. But then it started to follow an obvious path to an obvious conclusion, and that's when it lost me. For what it is it's a decent film, but hardly worthy of the praise that got it passed along to me. Kinda bummed.

Heavy Metal (1981)
Re-watch - Sept. 24th

So in order to lift my spirits back up from Don't Look Now, I turned to Heavy Metal. I first watched this as a teenager, which is really the best time to watch it if you ever do. As its title suggests, it's all sex, drugs, and rock n roll, filtered through fantasy worlds in an anthology fashion. The animation is uneven in places, and certainly weak by today's standards, but you've got to realize that when it came out 33 years ago it was ahead of its time. And if you don't take it too seriously, there's plenty of fun to be had here. Course with a cast that includes John Candy, Eugene Levy, and Harold Ramis you've got to expect a sense of humor to run through the proceedings, though familiarity has led to my finding the humor more the sort to chuckle at than genuinely laugh heartily with. Still, it's not a bad way to pass an hour and a half, all things considered. I doubt I'd appreciate it as much had this been my first time seeing it, as it's pretty juvenile and its animation hardly holds a candle to what we see now, but fortunately that's not the case.

Still undecided as to which is my favorite sequence here...either the one with the war plane or the one where the guy and the woman get abducted from the Pentagon.

Just a thought: As Captain Sternn's list of crimes was read off I kept waiting to hear "motion picture distribution" among them. Blame the Zuckers & Abrahams.

Re-watch - Sept. 29th

It had been so long since I last watched this one I had kinda forgot how much of an emotional beating this is. They could've called it "Soul Crusher" instead, for all the tragedy piled on throughout its run-time. Fortunately it's also consistently engaging and wonderfully acted. I was so caught up in the storytelling I was willing to keep pushing forward with the film with no thought to jumping ship on it. Sure, some moments are predictable & there seems to be an intent early on to make sure everyone knows how attractive Brad Pitt is, but those are minor issues really rather than aspects that ruin the overall experience.

What did break me out of its spell though was the fact that I've seen so many of Pitt's movies at this point that there were moments where I saw other characters he has played show their faces for a moment. A flash of Tyler Durden here, a bit of Early Grayce there, a hint of Floyd from True Romance, and at one point I expected him to bare his fangs like he was Louis. By the end of the film I wanted to watch more of his movies but lacked the time to do so.

Anyway, I'm glad I finally revisited this one, and while it's possible I'd revisit it again some time it's unlikely it'll be too soon. Just too much tragedy to be worth watching often.
