While humans and orcs continue their endless wars against each other, a few individuals try to maintain hope for a brighter future. The story is about as forgettable as possible and there's nothing genuine about the film at all. It is mostly based on exhausting and overflowing CGI-battles and if there ever was any plot, it is as dead as one of those countless bodies seen in the film.

A movie theater Kino Regina in Helsinki is currently showing Spielberg's films and this time I got to see "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" which has always been my favorite film in the series. Seeing it at the cinema was a breathtaking experience and something I've been wanting to do for a long time. "Temple of Doom" is like a wild roller coaster ride in the form of cinema with exciting and exotic environments.

The eventful story proceeds quickly but not too quickly. Pacing in action scenes is almost perfect and there are no dead moments at all. The airplane crash, the jungles, the dark caves swarming with bugs, the creepy cult, the riveting mine cart chase, and of course the exciting suspension bridge scene at the end are all very memorable.

The film can be consireded a homage to 1950s adventure films but it also works very well as an independent film. A discerning viewer can notice some similarities between this and George Stevens's classic "Gunga Din". "Temple of Doom" also bears a resemblance to Fritz Lang's magnificent "Indian Epic" ("The Tiger of Eschnapur" & "The Indian Tomb").

It was fascinating to see "Conan the Barbarian" at the cinema. The film has always felt somehow hollow for me and the plot drags quite a bit but at least in its entirety it is still an emotionally striking experience. One of the problems with the film is also that Poledouris's famous composings are playing a little bit too loud in some scenes. Schwarzenegger can't act, he never could, but in this case it doesn't matter because his role only requires him to be and look impressive while holding a giant sword, and that's what he manages to do.

A movie sound recordist witnesses a car accident when he is recording sounds for a new movie. He saves a prostitute from a sinking car and befriends her. It is also revealed that the man killed in the accident was a famous governor. When the main character begins analyzing his materials he soon starts to suspect that he actually witnessed a murder instead of an accident.

"Blow Out" is definitely one of the best films by De Palma and one of the most memorable thrillers of the 80s. All the De Palma's best films seem to borrow something from older thrillers but they also always invent something new or use old methods in an exciting or surprising way. Not many movies use sound as a plot device as creatively as this movie. A little bit straightforward plot doesn't really bother because the atmosphere is very gripping from beginning to end and the ending isn't the most typical one.

The beginning scene of "Laukaus tehtaalla" ("A Shot in the Factory") is shocking and powerful: A middle aged man walks up to his old boss and shoots him with a shotgun without hesitation. The film by a Finnish alternative filmmaker Erkko Kivikoski examines all the events that led to this point. The director doesn't need any exaggarations when he is explaining the problems with capitalist system, because he merely needs to show it as it is. Mixing documentary style tricks with fiction work very well in the film and the end result is about as realistic as it gets without it being actually a documentary.

Fortunately, overall situation for the working class people is way better in Finland nowadays than what is was a couple of decades ago, but we should still remember that all the injustice presented in the film still exists in large part of the world. Kivikoski also manages to explain what socialism actually is without being preachy: it's about giving more power to ordinary people and that is scary to those political elites who only want to control the working class people and keep them oppressed.

Excalibur (1981)
11.5. 2019

John Boorman's "Excalibur" is undeniably one of the best films in his filmography, along with "Deliverance" and "The Emerald Forest". Boorman knows how to direct dynamic, eventful, and emotionally powerful spectacles. "Excalibur" includes everything a perfect and epic medieval adventure needs: a magical sword, sorcery, tragedy, romance, sword fights, and intense battle scenes, and these elements are supported by gorgeous cinematography and bombastic soundtrack. There's no unnecessary jabbering nor embarrassing sentimentality in the film, because it focuses only on relevant things. Some of the lighter and even comedic moments prevent the film from getting overly serious. Seeing a film like "Excalibur" at the cinema is a privilege that you're never going to forget.

A young boy witnesses a giant spaceship landing near his house but his parents aren't convinced when he tells them about his weird experience. Soon his parents and several other people start turning into some weird creatures which doesn't have a mind of their own. "Invaders from Mars" stars as a fairly interesting science fiction film but halfway through it shifts into a really clumsily made Cold War metaphor. Quality of the print is really bad but it's hardly any worse than stiff actors which, just like the martians in the film, doesn't show any human emotions.

A young finnish man Teemu is living in a gay relationship with a French-jewish Ruben, but when an old man gives Ruben a bag of money, Teemu forces Ruben to move out of their apartment. Ruben travels to France to live with his family but encounters some new troubles during his visit. The premise of the film is quite unique and easy to appreciate. Colorful cinematography and comedic elements reminds me of Pedro Almodóvar's films. "Let My People Go!" examines some interesting issues like Jewish views on homosexuality and gay issues, but it doesn't go as deep as it could.

This remake of an old 80s horror film is pretty much everything you'd expect it to be. The original film by Mary Lambert was so lousy and clumsily made that I expected nothing and that's exactly what I got. Special effects are better than in the original, like they should be, and actors aren't especially bad. Still, all in all this film is a cliché-ridden mess and it's only impressive for those viewers who are completely ignorant about horror genre.

Basically "The Lego Movie" is just a 90 minutes long toy commercial, and nothing else. Everything about the story is so unimaginative and tired that merely technically decent animation technique isn't going to save the entirety. The hysterically fast-paced movie also looks like it suffers from ADHD. This is possibly the most commercial movie ever made.

"The Heiress", one of the greatest films by William Wyler, looks like another standard melodrama that tells about class differences and romance, but it truly is something else. It can't be classified as a romantic film since there's no genuine romance in the film. "The Heiress" is more like an analysis of morally corrupt society instead of a traditional melodrama.

A strict and cynical father wastes all of his time on thinking about his deceased wife. His daughter falls in love with a young man but her father believes that the young man is only interested in her money and wants to get rid of him. This is the basis for an analysis of emotionally empty capitalist society. The overall impression is shocking: everyone uses each other for their own advantage and the way of life depicted in the film is dominated by loneliness, sadism, frigidity, and greed.

After a failed suicide attempt a woman wakes up at a mental institution and hears that she may have only a few days left to live anymore. I have no idea why anyone would classify this slow-paced and tedious film as some kind of a crime classic. The first problem of "The Italian Job" is its complete lack of character development. We have no idea who these potentially interesting characters are so why are we supposed to care what happens to them? Especially the first half of the film also suffers from rushed editing because some scenes just doesn't work at all. The director even managed to ruin the potentially exciting action sequence at the end, which could've been at least some kind of saving grace.

A little girl suddenly disappears on a one fateful day. Her father has determined to find her daughter, no matter how long it's going to take. Atom Egoyan's thriller isn't a carefully constructed masterpiece such as "The Sweet Hereafter" because it loses some of its power near the end, but it is still mostly a stable and underrated film in its genre. The film exposes some shocking secrets about repulsive underground child abuse rings and manages to do so without resorting to unnecessary violence and other typical vigilante film cliches.

"Regression" is the only film by Amenábar that disappointed me. It mostly feels just quite cheap compared to his other works. The film is a very basic psychological thriller that uses all the standard tricks like stormy nights, satanic cults, and blurring the lines between fantasy and fiction. There's only a very few scenes in the film that can be considered thrilling and the movie falls flat with a rushed and lackluster ending.

This is a movie about dinosaurs and their creator, a man known as John Hammond, a man who spared no expense, except maybe he did. However, Spielberg didn't do that when he was making this classic adventure film that still looks very modern although it was released over 25 years ago. "Jurassic Park" teached the general audience that dinosaurs resembled more like birds instead of lizards. The movie is mostly known for its magnificent computer effects but in reality there are only 14 minutes of dinosaur visual effects in the film. The movie mixed CGI effects with live action effects with monumental impact, and the rest is history. The cast is one of the most memorable ones ever because all the actors suit perfectly for their roles. Richard Attenborough is so natural as John Hammond that sometimes I've confused the actor with the character he was playing.

"Une femme mariée" sounds very simple since it basically is a film about ordinary married couple and their relationship. In a way, it may be a simple film but in a creative way. Godard's unconventional filmmaking methods proves that movies don't necessarily need to be based solely on a plot. This is something that everybody who really take cinema seriously should remember, because way too many people are obsessed about plots despite the fact that cinema is in fact a very diverse art form. Godard teaches that it is also a very diverse and practical language.

I had a chance to see this experimental film at a movie theater which was an experience I enjoyed quite a lot, although it was disappointing to notice that there were so few viewers watching the film. It's like people have something else to do during warm and beautiful day than watching experimental French films.

"Une femme mariée" is mostly based on short close-up shots which reveal characters' feelings and also almost all the parts of human body, which is refresing compared to those less fascinating melodramas that often feel too stiff and heavy with all their depressing limitations. Godard treats erotic elements of his film with respect and doesn't let anything to limit his will to say what he wants to say.

Admittedly, making a good and especially original comic book film is really difficult, but was it still really necessary to make "Black Panther" this bad? It's not only an extremely cliched movie, but it's also underwritten, badly paced, painfully slow, and irritatingly long. Since all the action scenes are just as boring as all the talking heads that just keep repeating their tired dialogue, I really don't know how anyone could find this movie in any way entertaining.

Jean Renoir's "Le testament du Docteur Cordelier" breaths new life into Robert Louis Stevenson's classical story. It's a perfect psychological horror film and a perfect film in general. It relies on tense atmosphere instead of some cheap effects like many other much more forgettable adaptations. The acting performances that feel astoundingly natural are integral part the general atmosphere of the film. When you are watching Jean-Louis Barrault's performance in the main role, you almost forget that you are watching an actor playing a role.

"Le testament du Docteur Cordelier" tells about unlimited power and its stunning impact. It reminds us that there are real and genuinely frightening monsters living among us instead of some ridiculous vampires and zombies that aren't in the least bit scary since we know that they are completely fictional.

The film makes you think about all those crazy people on the streets that are randomly attacking other people for no reason like the main character of Renoir's film. Are they naturally crazy or is there some more complex explanation for their behavior? All of us have our dark side but for some reason some people are better at avoiding their dark tempations than others, and it is ignorance regarding the true nature of our own dark side that is truly disturbing.

Heavenly Jayne Mansfield is Rita Marlowe, the sexiest and the most flamboyant film star in the world, who would do anything for success so she is an embodiment of artificial and shallow modern culture. Rockwell Hunter, a struggling TV writer, tries to get Rita to endorse a new lipstick but to do this he must pretend to be Rita's lover. "Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?" is a film that asks some serious questions regarding the mass media that provokes mass hysteria and the advertising world that promotes shallow substitute lifestyle. What's so great about this film is that Frank Tashlin manages to say everything he wants to say without ever sounding preachy or pretentious. Tashlin's film is mainly defined by clever satire and borderline absurd humor, and of course, Jayne Mansfield in a bathtub reading "Peyton Place" is also something that leaves an everlasting impression.

Kubrick's anti-war and anti-military masterpiece starts powerfully with a scene where a couple of young men are having their heads shaved. This is a metaphoric way of showing how individuals lose their identity when they become just meaningless and expandable parts of a brutal military machine. First half of the film tells how soldiers are made, and it isn't any less shocking than being in the middle of actual war. "Full Metal Jacket" revolves around the Vietnam War but it could be a movie about any war. The most important thing to know is the fact that humanity itself will always be the biggest casualty of war.

Ernst Lubitsch directed "Heaven Can Wait" when he was seriously ill but the director managed to turn his personal weaknesses into his strengths which you can clearly see in his last movies. "Heaven Can Wait" starts as a light fantasy film and later it develops into a sharp analysis of fragility of memories and true requirements for happiness. The film combines elements of tragedy and farce, and any perceptive viewer can see that Lubitsch managed to keep his unique touch as long as he was still able to make movies. This is also a sad film because it inevitably makes you think that its director left us way too early. Who knows what else he could have achieved?

Title in English: "Uuno Turhapuro in military service"
Uuno Turhapuro is a clumsy and lazy guy who somehow always manages to find an unique solution to almost any problem he encounters. In the plot Uuno's father-in-law Tuura becomes the Minister of Defence and orders the main character to fulfill his military service.

This is not a very original film or anything, but most of the jokes work and it still is one of the best films in this long series of awkwardly made Finnish comedies. Making fun of the military and its ridiculous rules is always enjoyable. This is also a kind of special film for me because it was filmed at Santahamina, which is a beautiful island in Eastern Helsinki and it's also the place where I grew up. It's fascinating to see what it looked like in the 80s and watching this film almost makes me miss it. A Finnish disco queen Eini makes a cameo in the film and introduces her song "Kesä ja yö" ("Summer and Night") which became a surprise hit.

Two old cowboys encounter lots of different kind of problems while trying to transport gold through dangerous territory. A young and unpredictable man joins them and instantly starts causing troubles when the group meets a beautiful girl who is about to get married. Peckinpah's film is actually a very basic western but it's easy to appreciate how the director carefully develops the atmosphere and handles all the basic themes like greed, betrayal, and romance. Gorgeous landscapes serve the story in a very impressive way. "Ride the High Country" is one of the more comedic films by the director but this doesn't lessen its value at all but makes it more colorful.

The first time when I saw "The Shining" I was in a hotel, which definitely was an appropriate place to watch it. Unlike most of the other horror films of its time, this one has aged very well and it feels fresh every time I watch it. Although Kubrick's famous horror masterpiece can be perceived as a traditional horror film that frightens you with disturbing and warped scenes, it is actually much more than that. The film is also clearly criticism against deluded upper class people. The main characters are living in a luxury hotel with basically unlimited resources. They have lots of personal space, more food than any normal person is ever going to need, and they are free to live their own lives with a very few restrictions. However, they are still living an isolated and unhappy life and not any amount of resources is ever going to change this fact. Danny, the child character in the film, has a special gift called "shining", which basically allows him to see the disturbing reality of their life, and he ends up witnessing horrors that would scar any little kid forever. The revealing last scene of the film directly suggests that one of the main characters have always been part of high societies.
