Finnish silent films are rarities and that's why they are always at least a little bit fascinating. This is a film about poverty, romance, jealousy, and loneliness. The story almost loses its focus at one point and everything is simplified but the film is still a decent melodrama that draws attention to those citizens who are less fortunate.

Limelight (1952)
17.2. 2020

An aged and forgotten comedian Calvero prevents a young woman from committing a suicide and encourages her to continue her career as a ballerina. Calvero himself desperately tries to become relevant again and his personal pride becomes one of his biggest obstacles.

"Limelight" is an incredibly rich film. It is obviously partly based on Chaplin's own life so basically he is playing two different characters: Calvero and himself. There are also some references to the Little Tramp which makes the film especially fascinating: it's like we are watching a documentary about the Tramp's life.

Aging and its inevitable consequenses are an integral part of the story. Everyone becomes old and there's absolutely nothing we can do about it - this is a fact of life. Chaplin doesn't exaggarate but he is completely honest when he is talking about this subject and this is absolutely necessary because aging is still a real problem that exists and we can't pretend otherwise. Chaplin proves that long and sad monologues aren't necessary. Just a close-up shot of Chaplin's face is more expressive than any amount of words.

Chaplin also accurately shows how unforgiving an entertainment industry can be: people are pressured to be relevant and popular. Also, working as an actor becomes harder with age because the entertainment industry favours younger people. Calvero, just like Chaplin himself, isn't bothered by younger people though because seeing a young and confident ballerina dancing with no worries clearly gives him joy. Maybe it's better for everyone to forget bitterness regarding getting older and focus on everything that gives joy to us and take advantage of all the possibilities that life has to offer.

A victim of a hate crime tries to survive his severe trauma by creating his own unique doll world. "Welcome to Marwen" has some potential and the main idea is interesting enough, but the execution follows the standard Hollywood formula. Steve Carell is mainly known for his comedic roles but he is also very talented as a dramatic actor.

A Man Escaped (1956)
12.2. 2020

Robert Bresson's masterpiece is a completely honest, truthful, and incredibly accurate film about a member of the French Resistance and his escape from a Nazi prison. It's especially impressive how Bresson uses sound to create unique atmosphere. The main character has been sentenced to death and he knows that he is going to get killed any time possible if he doesn't manage to escape. The film presents an interesting and depressing moral dilemma: Helping other prisoners to escape may make everything worse for the main character and the other prisoners if he gets gaught, so basically someone needs to be sacrificed so that some others could live. In the other hand, all the prisoners also understand that taking risks is necessary in order to survive. Bresson focuses exactly on the right things and the film isn't any longer than necessary. It manages to impress viewers without any hint of sentimentality.

There's nothing original or inventive about this film whatsoever. The third and the last film in the series tells about one giant battle between massive armies and nothing else. It's film full of forgettable dialogue, boring fight scenes, and shallow characters.

Margot Robbie plays an eccentric and sexy villain known as Harley Quinn who doesn't have any magical powers. Her best qualities are her psychotic nature and unpredictability, and they are the main reasons why the character is so fascinating. Margot has always been at her best playing these kind of characters. She is also entertaining, just like a harlequin is supposed to be, no matter what she does.

A colorful animation sequence explains Harley's background quite quickly and it's relieving to know that the film doesn't waste time on prolonged explanations. After ending her relationship with the Joker, Harley is now living alone in her modest apartment with a pet hyena. The main character ends up protecting a girl who is chased by an especially vicious madman Roman Sionis, also known as Black Mask. Later three superheroes Black Canary, Huntress, and Renee Montoya decide to help Harley for their own reasons.

There aren't many quiet moments in the fast-paced film, which is problematic because the film would be more stable if it would calm down once in a while. In the other hand, all the action scenes are very captivating and they are punctuated by enjoyably sharp, black humour so the film delivers what it promises. All the older and newer pop and rock songs also fit the atmosphere very well.

In the ultimate battle between good and evil, the famous superheroes have to defeat the famous supervillain and his henchmen. Several subplots collide in "Avengers: Endgame" and while the film doesn't really offer anything new or especially surprising, it has just enough action scenes, comedy, and drama to capture interest.

Another simplified variation of a classic story. "The Jungle Book" looks beautiful and it's fun and enjoyable while it lasts, but the film is over too quickly. Lack of character development is definitely the biggest problem. I have to say it's impressive though that the film doesn't look dated at all even though it was released over 50 years ago.

The main character of "Landscape with Many Moons" is a middle-aged man who seems to have lost his will to live. Why? I don't know, the film never tells us. It doesn't explain anything. This is obviously supposed to some kind of an experimental and surrealist film, but basically it's just another unimaginative small-budget drama film that tries too hard to be something special. Someone should tell the director of this film that there's a difference between being intentionally confusing and being genius.

Ripa ruostuu (1993)
1.2. 2020

Ripa, an unsuccessfull film director, is living reckless life but finally he has to face the consequences of his irresponsible behavior. These kind of stories rarely end well and the Finnish cinema is full of them so I highly doubt this truly impresses anyone. The amateurish camera tricks aren't able to hide the obvious flaws in the film like the complete predictability of the plot.

A female vampire wanders around the streets of Bad City until she meets a man who changes her life or something like that. The film doesn't tell anything significant or fascinating about its main characters so it doesn't really give viewers any reasons to care about anything that happens to them. If this incredibly dull and slow-paced film teaches something, it is the fact that a weird main idea itself doesn't make a film good. The film was shot in black-and-white but the story would be about as mundane even if the film was shot in color.

A group of American students travel to the location of "the Dyatlov Pass incident" in order to make a documentary and find out what really happened there but the students aren't prepared to face all the dangers and secrets that are waiting for them. The film starts as a typical but moderately exciting found footage film but the inconsistencies and the awkward explanations make the film fall apart near the end. I doubt that many viewers bother to watch this film more than once because it doesn't bring anything new to the horror genre.

Lost in Paris (2016)
29.1. 2020

A shy and awkward Canadian librarian meets a homeless man while searching for her aunt in Paris. "Paris pied nus" is abous as standard as these kind of comedies can get. There are some delightful moments in the film but most of the typical French cliches are just tiresome. The film doesn't try much, and it doesn't achieve much neither.

Patch Adams (1998)
28.1. 2020

Patch Adams wants to be a doctor but the "evil" doctors don't like him because they consider his methods too unorthdox. That's the main idea of the film, and it's also the only idea. Everything in "Patch Adams" is so sugar-coated, sentimental, and ridiculously black and white that it's hard to believe that it wasn't meant to be a parody. Of course, it wouldn't be a good parody either because parodies are supposed to be funny, but at least then it wouldn't be quite as pretentious.

The film is supposedly based on a true story but in reality it's just mocking the true story because the real Patch Adams denounced the film, and justifiably so, because he's actually very professional at his job. Some of the characters are completely made up and the messages the film is trying send are suspicious at least. The main character even establishes his own illegal hospital and when he needs more equipment he decides to steal some equipment from another hospital. That's nice, because it's not like the doctors and patients in that other hospital are going to need them or anything.

Like several other Robin Williams films, also this one ends with sappy and predictable speech. The main character makes one really odd and uncomfortable statement during his speech: he asks, "what's wrong with death, sir". What can you even say to that? What kind of a doctor talks like that? What's wrong with death? Well, you're not alive anymore, that's what's wrong with it. This is definitely one of the worst films of the '90s.

Hereditary (2018)
25.1. 2020

Kids with blank stares, creepy creatures staring at people in the dark, crazy psychics - haven't we seen all of these things million times before? When horror fans are going to get tired of these overused cliches? "Hereditary" isn't actually anywhere near the worst psychological horror films, but it's still only mildly better than average at best. "Hereditary" deals with some interesting issues, but the execution is quite messy because the film seems to throw lots of random stuff on the screen without any explanations which makes it frustrating to watch.

I was 11 years old when the first Independence Day film was released and seeing it at the cinema was an incredible experience. I had never seen as impressive special effects before because they weren't as common back then as they are nowadays. Of course the film has its problems but it offers some iconic scenes and all in all the first film doesn't take itself too seriously.

The sequel follows standard routines: the plot is mostly the same but everything needs to be bigger and more powerful, and that's the biggest problem with the film. Everything is way too exaggarated by any possible standards. It's a good thing that we have some actors from the original film, and these familiar characters played by such actors as Jeff Goldblum, Brent Spiner, and Judd Hirsch have some funny scenes. I also saw the sequel at the cinema and it was of course great to experience that awesome theme song on the silver screen once again.

Joker (2019)
23.1. 2020

The main character of "Joker", Arthur Fleck, has something to tell, but no one wants to listen to him. He's living in a corrupt society where basic human kindness is rare and selfishness is running rampant. He wants to be a comedian, a real clown who makes people laugh unrestrainedly, but he suffers from a mental disorder that forces him to laugh, often in inappropriate situations. It's a dangerous condition in a society where laughter is strictly controlled. In a way, the society forces him to laugh but at the same time it also forces people to become miserable - that's definitely a recipe for disaster.

"Joker" is not only a character study but it's also a poignant social commentary and accurate sociological examination. The main character is supposed to be understood, but not symphatized. He is one of the few genuinely scary comic book characters because you can see people like him everywhere. Reality is and always will be scarier than fiction. Arthur, who finally becomes the Joker after some shocking events, is actually just an awkward and lonely man, so he's easy to relate to. He is like a king's jester, and it's nothing new that a jester is always more reasonable but also better manipulator than the king.

It's an undeniable truth that the modern society embraces narcissism and exploitation and the film suggests how exploited individuals may only survive if they become power-seeking narcissists themselves. Another interesting theme in the film is mass hysteria that is connected to the other themes, like narcissism and media criticism. One of the characters in the film is a talk show host Murray Franklin, who shares some similarities with the Joker: both of them are charismatic figures who are able to create mass hysteria. Murray genuinely believes that he's a good guy. Joker doesn't suffer from that kind of a delusion.

A mysterious sceptre sends April to ancient Japan and the Turtles have to figure out the way to rescue her. Some ancient Japanese warriors are also sent to the modern-day USA which obviously leads to several comical situations. It's really difficult to make up a stupider story than this. Surely even kids' films should have at least some kind of quality standards? At first I though it was a bit odd that people living in ancient Japan can speak fluent English, but soon I realized that it's pointless to waste time to be worried about it because it's hardly the biggest problem in the film.

I thought Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was a dumb concept even when I was a kid. "The Secret of the Ooze" has a plot so shallow that it's difficult to describe which is not the biggest problem but it still would be nice that even something worth mentioning would happen. The main characters wouldn't be credible even as birthday entertainers and the whole film is just a collection of really bad puns and fight scenes - that's it. Weird fetishes represent the more suspicious side of the film: why one of the Turtles have a poster of a sexy woman on his wall? The film is actually telling us that a giant mutated turtle can be attracted to a human female. What kind of a perverted mind thought that up?

"The Neon Demon" is clearly meant to be a critical and rough depiction of the modeling word, but Refn's exaggarated stylistic choices feel too conceited which is typical for his films. There's way too much going on in this film. I guess the main plot involves these two superheroes, Ant-Man and the Wasp, working together with Dr. Hank Pym in order to save Hank's wife Janet from the quantum realm. The main characters have some comic relief characters helping them and there's also some random bad guys who are chasing the good guys for whatever reason. Like always, there's also FBI agents trying to stop the bad guys or the good guys, I'm not exactly sure because the plot is all over the place. "Ant-Man and the Wasp" isn't obviously meant to be a totally serious nor logical comic book film, but that doesn't change the fact that it's frustrating because it's confusing and it's also extremely ridiculous in so many different ways.

I saw Kubrick's swan song "Eyes Wide Shut" two times at the cinema last year, and recently saw it again when it was playing at another movie theater. It's been 20 years since it was released and it's an incredibly thought-provoking movie. I've probably seen "Eyes Wide Shut" about 30-40 times, I'm not exactly sure. I never get tired of this film, as a matter of fact, getting tired of this kind of film is impossible because I tend to notice some new details and hidden meanings every time I see it.

I've always been thinking about some things that the characters said at the end. What Alice meant when she suggested that their adventure or some parts of it may have been just a dream? I don't think she literally meant that the things that happened were any kind of a dream. She probably thought that their experiences were so psychologically damaging and scary that she wish that they were just a dream, and this kind of a reaction is, of course, completely understandable considering how the human mind works.

It's an obvious fact that the human mind was the most important character in the film: when we experience something we don't quite understand, it scares us, because we may learn something about ourselves we aren't prepared to handle.

"Leviathan" is a depiction of a cold society where people suffering from misfortunes and failures try to cure themselves with alcohol and where probelms are too often solved with violence and bureaucracy also causes problems. Rugged and bleak environment you see in the film was definitely the right choice for this kind of story. I'm not sure what the director wanted to say with this movie. It's clearly meant to be some kind of a satiric comedy, but mostly it's just pointless. Where's the satire? I didn't see it anywhere. Also, the director didn't know that comedies are meant to be funny but I didn't find a single good joke in this film. Most of the supposedly comedic scenes consists of the awkward characters yelling at each other and walking from one place to another. That's not funny nor entertaining to watch. Also, the whole film feels weirdly amateurish. All in all, flat characters and bland execution makes "The Death of Stalin" looks like an SNL sketch that was turned into a full-length film.

"Despair" is Fassbinder's one of the lesser known works and it's also one of the more confusing ones. It doesn't have a traditional plot nor lots of explanations for all the weird thing happening so assumably a viewer have to be especially patient and focused while watching the film, although I'm not entirely sure how much that helps to understand anything. The film seems to throw lots of random and obsucre things on the screen without a clear purpose, but the film also includes some fascinating elements and rarely discussed subjects. Basically "Despair" is some kind of a satire and political film but personally I think the most interesting thing about the film is that how it accurately tells about certain kind of eccentric individuals and their lifestyle in Nazi Germany.

"Phantom Thread" is probably Anderson's best film. His directing style actually reminds me of Kubrick's works that are just as carefully constructed as this film. The main character in the film is a respected tailor living in 1950s London. He is also well-known for being a womanizer but one day he meets a determined woman called Alma who changes his life. The tailor is played by incredibly charismatic Daniel Day-Lewis who is known for his versatility. I'm quite sure that nobody could've played this role better, and Vicky Krieps who plays Alma is an impressive young talent.

"Phantom Thread" manages to surprise viewers because it's not that obvious how the whole story is going to end. It's a dark but also a weirdly touching movie about perverted love but it's especially impressive how the director is faithful to his methods and artistic vision. You rarely see as emotionally powerful but also genuinely thought-provoking films nowadays. The story presents us a perfectionist who is used to control everything in his life, but his lifestyle has made him so delusional that he doesn't recognize the fact that in the end he is just as vulnerable as everyone else.
