The hero and his famous talking car save the day once again. The almost nonexistent story is set in year 2000, which is at least a little bit interesting detail in this otherwise totally irrelevant film. This is really nothing but just one TV episode stretched into a full feature film.

An old widow hires a private detective to find out the truth behind the disturbing film she found from her husband's collection. The film seems to depict a brutal murder of a young woman and the private detective ends up in all sorts of troubles while exploring the darkest side of humanity. Schumacher's thriller has many good elements but it feels unbalanced and somehow aimless. Near the end the film turns into a generic vigilante film but the atmosphere is still mostly quite captivating in a warped way.

"Spider-Man: Far from Home" shows Peter Parker doing what he always does: He fights against the bad guys while desperately trying to protect his identity. Only the locations are different than usual because now the main characters destroy famous European cities instead of American ones.

Three female agents who always execute their missions with incredible accuracy and smoothness confront an especially challenging enemy. "Charlie's Angels" is shot like a music video which is a bit distracting at times but the film still works as shamelessly shallow and light entertainment.

Bombshell (2019)
24.9. 2020

"Bombshell" tells the true story about three women who managed to pluck up courage in order to fight against their abusers. The film doesn't have anything new to say about media industry and its problems. It just presents some very obvious facts and that's about it.

Only a chef who is also a professional martial artist can save the day when vicious criminals capture a battleship. Seagal's best film doesn't have any dull moments although it has some gratuitous ones, not that they are necessarily problematic. There's also a nice balance between fast-paced action scenes and comical moments.

"It Came from the Desert" is a special kind of a science fiction film. It is a Finnish production that is based on the old 80s video game with the same name. One problem with the film is that it has a little bit too many bike driving scenes. Other than that, "It Came from the Desert" is quite predictable but somewhat enjoyable and it's probably the best film based on a video game along with the first "Resident Evil" film. Giants ants are quite impressive creatures.

I don't think the person who wrote the script for this film is a history expert: according to "One Million Years B.C." humans and dinosaurs existed at the same time. Human ancestors may have existed over million years ago but they certainly didn't look like Racquel Welch. Not that there's anything wrong with her. Obviously you shouldn't take a film like this too seriously and it actually provides at least some fascinating moments for viewers interested in camp cinema.

Deep Impact (1998)
21.9. 2020

A giant meteor is going to collide with Earth and people can do nothing but hope for the best and prepare for the worst. The director Mimi Leder made a surprisingly good film about a difficult subject. "Deep Impact" avoids the most distracting cliches: it is a touching film but not too preachy nor sentimental. It also has a good balance between human relationships and nightmarish catastrophy sequences.

Gladiator (2000)
20.9. 2020

Even though "Gladiator" doesn't have much to do with real history it is still easily one of the most memorable achievements by Ridley Scott. The film simply delivers what it promises. The bombastic and unforgettable soundtrack supports the action-packed story about a general who became a gladiator and political scheming is smoothly connected to the revenge plot. The ending is a great example on how the ending can be both sad and uplifting at the same time.

A bullied boy escapes miserable reality to fantasy world with a magical book. "The Neverending Story" feels like a bit too short but humour and charming old fashioned special effects manages to keep the film stable enough. This film could be classified as a statement against cynicism.

Once again a cyborg arrives from the future to protect John Connor while another even more technologically advanced female cyborg tries to kill him. "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines" provides some decent new laughs but the plot structure is mostly the same as in the two previous Terminator films. At least the ending is pleasantly surprising.

Snowpiercer (2013)
17.9. 2020

The humankind has failed to fight against the climate change and now all the humans are living in a train powered by a mysterious source. The train has been divided into two different classes: the poor people living in misery and the rich people living in luxury. Finally the poor people decide that they have suffered enough and they start to revolt in order to regain their power and dignity.

There's nothing new about the premise of "Snowpiercer" and the plot is so predictable and full of absurdities that it's hard to take seriously. The film is also unnecessarily slow at times. The high quality special effects aren't enough to save the film.

Bound (1996)
12.9. 2020

"Bound" is an erotic thriller that Hitchcock would've appreciated. The Wachowski brothers focus on thrills and atmosphere instead of talking and that's why the film works so well. This is definitely their best film and also one of the best thrillers of the '90s.

The directors don't waste time when they introduce the characters and the overall tone of the film is set early during the first scenes: A lesbian plumber Corky meets seductive Violet and her gangster boyfriend in the elevator and the women instantly know that they can't resist each other. After one intimate night they want to start a new life together but they need money and Violet's boyfriend have 2 million dollars that could be useful. However, stealing from gangsters isn't an easy task.

"Bound" doesn't have any specific message to tell but it revolves around themes that will always be relevant and inspiring. "Bound" is atmosheric and very captivating film without being too over the top and it accurately and shamelessly shows us how desire for sex and money controls people. It's also good that lesbian characters in the film aren't some walking stereotypes but real people.

Emmanuelle 2 (1975)
7.9. 2020

A horny French woman and her equally desperate husband are living in an open relationship which means that they can fuck who ever they want to without any consequences. That's also the only thing that happens in this awful movie. Officially "Emmanuelle 2" is a sequel but it is so repetitive that as well it could be a remake. The film embraces shallow lifestyle and racist stereotypes: all the Asian women are either prostitutes or masseuses and all the non-white characters are nothing but faithful servants for rich white people. Absolutely nothing meaningful happens in the worthless plot and suddenly the film just ends really abruptly before making any sense.

5.9. 2020

A tough L.A. cop searches for the merciless killer that leaves mutilated bodies everywhere while the city is being ravaged by territorial gang wars. "Predator 2" is almost as effective as the more famous first film and the city is just as thrilling environment as the jungle. It is a fascinating idea that humans with all their weaknesses and petty issues are really nothing compared to way more powerful species from the outer space.

4.9. 2020

A rescue team encounters an unfathomable evil in the jungle and a rescue mission suddenly turns into a bloody nightmare. "Predator" is one of the darker action films of the '80s. It doesn't explain much but the atmosphere is so tense that it's not necessary either.

The famous Terminator sequel isn't any more logical than the first film but it sends a honest message and smoothly paced action scenes makes you forget some irrelevant flaws. "Betoniyö" is a film that wanders around for a while and then it just ends. I'm not sure if anything in the film made any sense at all. I'm not sure if the director herself knew what she was trying to say. I guess you could say that the film looks good but that is such a mundane thing to say that it doesn't really mean anything. Painted white walls can also look good and watching them is about as interesting as watching this pretentious film.

An aged film director examines his past while planning his new film project. Almodóvar's film looks gorgeous but it is riddled with cliches and it isn't especially profound in any way. "Pain & Glory" is probably important to its director because the main subject is very personal to him but the film still seems kind of pointless and even repetitive at times.

A sexy and psychotic murderer wants to bring her killer doll boyfriend back alive so that they could finally get married and they force a young couple to help them. A Chinese martial art master meets a young black woman coincidentally and soon the two heroes find out that they are in the middle of a bloody gang war. Unbelievable martial art skills are obviously crucial when danger is lurking around every corner. The fast-paced and violent action film focuses on exaggarated fight scenes and mildly entertaining comedic routines. The plot is very basic and very thin which is a shame because Aaliyah and Jet Li could've actually been a really fun and unique couple.

A family survives an avalance but disagreements regarding the things that happened during the incident start breaking the happy family apart. The main message of the film is so obvious that some viewers might think that they missed something crucial but I don't think they did. Captain Sirocco is a pirate and a revolutionary who prepares to fight against a corrupt chief of police and save the people of Capri. The main character of "The Pirates of Capri" is like a pirate version of Zorro. Edgar G. "The Pirates of Capri" was entirely filmed in Italy which makes it especially authentic and unique cult classic.

A doctor becomes a vengeful and influential pirate after escaping from slavery. Curtiz's adventure film is a pleasantly balanced and still entertaining classic. The Vikings (1958)

The Viking Age isn't the most common subject for Hollywood films so at least the basic idea behind "The Vikings" is fascinating. The generic story offers no surprises. It's just that tired old story about two men who fall in love with a same woman. The story isn't especially bad though either and the settings and environments in the film are surprisingly authentic and quite impressive. Fleischer was clearly at his best when he was directing action scenes. Drama was never his strongest suit.

Three British soldiers encounter a creepy and violent cult while on a mission. They also meet Gunga Din, an Indian man who wants to be a soldier just like them. George Stevens's old fashioned adventure film preaches the message of comradeship and presents exotic locations. The film is dated and awkward in many ways, for example, the British imperialist army was in reality one of the most brutal organisations of all time and much worse than the thuggee cult presented in the film but this film just ignores that. I have to say though that comedic timing in the film is perfect and the action scenes are masterfully filmed as well.

Tarantino is certainly able to fill his films with tired popular culture references and irrelevant babbling but he still isn't able to edit his films properly. "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" would've been about 30 minutes shorter if only all the pointless and tedious driving scenes would've been trimmed. The film also focuses way too much on people smoking cigarettes and drinking booze. The film is assumably supposed to be some kind of a tribute to the old Hollywood with Tarantino's own twist but not everyone is interested in his pretentious twists. "Once Upon a Time in Hollyood" is more frustrating than provocative and it just doesn't have much to offer excluding some fine one liners and a couple of captivating scenes.

The director Haneke masterfully avoids typical cliches when he examines problematic human relationships and he diversely explores all the inducements related to disturbed behavior. Ash is fighting against evil spirits again. "Evil Dead II" is a loud sequel full of grotesque scenes, appropriate black humor, and overacting. An ancient Chinese emperor is awakened and the heroes from the previous film must prevent him from conquering the world with his gigantic terracotta army. "The Mummy Returns" recycles the plot from the first film and adds some new things: Bad guys awaken the body of Imhotep and again the heroes must fight against all kinds of weird mummified creatures. Now the main couple also have a son and Evelyn learns something interesting regarding her previous life.

Just like many other big budget sequels, "The Mummy Returns" tries to be bigger and more impressive than the previous film, which is questionable but not necessarily problematic. Overuse of CGI is still a problem but action scenes are smoothly directed. This film was made during a time period when action scenes weren't ruined with shaky cam and that's one of the things I like a lot about this film. It's really refreshing that you can actually see the action in action scenes.

Patricia Velasquez fortunately has a much bigger role in this than in the first film and she is dangerously attractive as a deadly seductress. She makes me want to forgive some awkward things about the film, like the Scorpion King. The Rock who plays the Scorpion King is actually a decent action star but the actor himself only appears briefly in the beginning of the film and later we only see a big and ridiculous CGI scorpion with his face.

It's been about 20 years since I saw "The Mummy" at the cinema and I can say that the film has aged relatively well. Especially the battle scene in the beginning and the awakening of the undead mummy are still impressive and exciting moments. The film is basically a comedic reimagination of the 1932 "The Mummy" with enormous amounts of CGI effects. It is a very traditional adventure film so it focuses on fast-paced action scenes and more or less awkward humor instead of anything especially serious, and it works somehow most of the time.

"The Goonies" is an obviously naive adventure film with some funny comical scenes and nice 80s atmosphere. Uncertainty of life is a cruel fact and it can confuse anyone regardless how confident one might be. It is also a rich source of ideas for auteur filmmakers like Rohmer who can create incredibly nuanced films about human relationships and "The Aviator's Wife" is one of the best examples of that.

Rohmer's film tells about a certain modern problem that is becoming more common every day: people don't seem to have enough time for each other. The main character Francois is deeply in love with his girlfriend Anne but he believes that Anne is cheating on him. Francois have to work during night which means that they can't spend time together as much as they might want. Apart from everything else Francois also has trouble staying awake because he often wastes his time on thinking about his problems instead of sleeping.

It is very admirable how Rohmer manages to be playful without compomising the overall serious tone of the film. One day Francois decides to spy his rival who is known as the aviator. Francois follows him and he learns that the aviator is dating some mysterious blonde woman. Francois also accidentally meets a very enthusiastic teenage girl who for some reason is very interested in what he is doing. She is as a matter fact so interested that it might be problematic for Francois and it is easy to laugh at the whole clumsiness of their situation.

None of the characters seem to know where their lives are heading. The only thing they truly know is that they have some serious issues and finding solutions to problems is usually easier said than done. Often solutions come from unexpected places: what if that random girl Francois met in the park actually changed his life forever? That is truly fascinating.

One day Frederic suddenly meets his old friend Chloe and begin to meet her in the afternoons, but Chloe has some erotic plans for them.

Rohmer's "Chloe in the Afternoon" is a fresh take on an old and always so thought-provoking subject. The film asks some simple questions and gives them some powerful answers. Rohmer isn't only interested in infidelity but conflicts between barbaric and civilized behavior in general. Even the most civilized people often have serious trouble with resisting their primal instincts no matter how hard they try to pretend otherwise. It is tragic but somehow civilized people just have to deal with it.
