Ingmar Bergman's powerful study of religion and depression tells about a priest who gives some inconsiderate advices to a depressed man. Before the priest realizes his terrible mistake, it's already too late. Bergman's realism is thought-provoking and hard-hitting. "Winter Light" is obviously anti-religious film but it also criticizes unhealthy dependence in general. One of the characters is an old maid who is desperately trying to flirt with the priest. In one of the most memorable scenes of the film the priest finally reveals his true feelings regarding the old maid and his revelation is both shocking and impressive in its honesty. Dependence on imaginary omnipotent being is just as harmful as being dependent on any disturbed individual.

Two lovers try to find happiness at the time of Cold War. Singing and dancing bring some joy to their lives during depressing times. "Cold War" is a beautiful film with nothing original to say. The story feels mostly aimless and the main characters are just bland stereotypes.

"Annabelle" is a typical modern horror film inspired by "The Conjuring", another equally predictable and cliched film. It tells about an ordinary middle class family that is terrorized by a creepy doll. Nothing much else happens in the plot. The best thing about "Annabelle" is that it reminds you of much better and more memorable horror films like "Rosemary's Baby" and "The Exorcist".

Humanity faces the biggest climate change crisis of all time and people must try to survive in extreme conditions while politicans pretend that they are doing something about it. "The Day After Tomorrow" tells about an important and current subject in an exaggerated way. This time US president is not an any kind of superhero that saves the humanity but just as clueless and incompetent character as he would be in real life as well.

A boy neglected by his father finds a mysterious board game and starts playing it with his friend with fateful consequences. 26 years lated two other kids find the game and they unsuspectingly release total chaos. "Jumanji" used to be one of my favorite films as a kid but nowadays it looks really clumsy and dated. It's probably possible to get some enjoyment out of it if you are able to shut your brains off for two hours.

An old sailor fights for his life at sea encountering all the possible challenges. Redford does a fine job in the main role but the film has zero originality. "All Is Lost" is based on a very simple idea which is not a necessarily bad thing but when all the ideas in the film have been recycled countless times before it's hard to get excited about anything that happens in the film.

"The Lost City of Z" isn't even nearly as exciting as it looks like. The main character is a British explorer who finds evidence of a lost civilization in the uncharted jungles of Amazon. He becomes obsessed with finding the lost city known as "Z" and even though many people mock him, he is determined to reach his ambitious goal. "The Lost City of Z" is based on a true story and that's probably more exciting than this heavy-handed film. It's almost like the director wasn't sure if he was making a drama or adventure film.

"Bergmál" is not a plot-driven film but series of totally random and bit confusing moments in the lives of Icelandic people preparing for Christmas. Just like ordinary life, sometimes those moments are confusing, sometimes dramatic or boring, but always at least somehow meaningful. The film is also a beautiful portrait of a cold but unique country.

"Ecstasy" by Gustav Machatý is a revolutionary melodrama that wasn't afraid to break boundaries. Machatý's rich and expressive style makes it truly powerful and memorable experience. Especially great thing about the film is that it is pure cinema, and by this I mean that there's nothing theatrical about it. It also doesn't look like a filmed book. The story is certainly classical story about tragic love but Machatý's methods make it shine in an inimitable way.

Four men are are enjoying a canoe trip until a shocking incident involving aggressive mountain men changes their life forever. "Deliverance" is certainly an exciting adventure film and also some kind of a thriller, but it is also a study of collision between civilized and primitive culture. Threatening and surprising situations in uncharted environment may turn even civilized men into savages. The film also has a sensible environmental message: the main characters decide to take a canoe trip simply because the river is still there and soon a dam project is going to destroy it.

"The Mask" heavily relies on Jim Carrey's energetic performance and completely absurd humour, which is not necessarily a problem but the special effects haven't aged well at all. The film also tries to explain how all of us actually wear some kind of a mask in our daily lives, but you can hardly expect any seriously thought-provoking psychological examinations from this kind of film.

A politician wants to celebrate her success but all the people invited to the party have their own problems and secrets which causes all kinds of problems. I'm not sure why this film was shot in black and white. It seems to be just a trick without any real purpose. The basis of the film reminds me of Ingmar Bergman's poignant human relationship films but it's too bad that this party stops right when it starts to become interesting.

A tough woman with criminal past must reluctantly protect a kid after his family got killed by gangsters. The two main characters have some fun and emotional moments together while they are escaping the gangsters but these few nice scenes don't save the film from awkward directing and aimless story. The ending is also disappointingly abrupt and it is not the only moment in this poorly written film that lacks proper explanations.

"Menashe" has lots of potential but it is disappointing as a critical film because it seems to stop before it properly even starts. Walter Hill's action classic "The Driver" is based on a simple but gripping premise: Ryan O'Neal plays a professional getaway driver who is one of the best at his job. An annoying and corrupted cop wants to catch him by any means necessary. No one could've played the main character better in this film than O'Neal. He is almost emotionless all the time and that's exactly why he is so impressive. His character isn't only fearless but also smart and it's almost impossible to guess what he is going to do next. "The Driver" is one of those rare admirable films that keeps you genuinely excited from beginning to end because it doesn't rely on boring cliches but more natural human behavior.

"Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb" is a movie so silly that it is actually hard to describe. There are simply no ideas that Hollywood wouldn't consider too moronic. This sequel repeats the ideas of the first film without any originality: the main character, who is a night security guard, have to defend the museum and its magical creatures and prevent total chaos. The jokes are lame and the messy story never goes anywhere. There are better ways to waste your time than watching this trainwreck of a movie.

The second part of Fritz Lang's "the Indian Epic" presents a miniature version of a capitalist society: rich and corrupted elite rules everything and troublesome sick people are forced to live in a cave under the luxurious palace. Political corruption and lust for life are both presented in the film as powerful forces that threaten even the most merciless leaders.

The film seems to depict a brutal murder of a young woman and the private detective ends up in all sorts of troubles while exploring the darkest side of humanity. Schumacher's thriller has many good elements but it feels unbalanced and somehow aimless. Near the end the film turns into a generic vigilante film but the atmosphere is still mostly quite captivating in a warped way.

Seagal's best film doesn't have any dull moments although it has some gratuitous ones, not that they are necessarily problematic. There's also a nice balance between fast-paced action scenes and comical moments.

"It Came from the Desert" is a special kind of a science fiction film. It is a Finnish production that is based on the old 80s video game with the same name. One problem with the film is that it has a little bit too many bike driving scenes. Other than that, "It Came from the Desert" is quite predictable but somewhat enjoyable and it's probably the best film based on a video game along with the first "Resident Evil" film. Giants ants are quite impressive creatures.

I don't think the person who wrote the script for this film is a history expert: according to "One Million Years B.C." humans and dinosaurs existed at the same time. Human ancestors may have existed over million years ago but they certainly didn't look like Racquel Welch. Not that there's anything wrong with her. Obviously you shouldn't take a film like this too seriously and it actually provides at least some fascinating moments for viewers interested in camp cinema.

The director Mimi Leder made a surprisingly good film about a difficult subject. "Deep Impact" avoids the most distracting cliches: it is a touching film but not too preachy nor sentimental. It also has a good balance between human relationships and nightmarish catastrophy sequences.

The bombastic and unforgettable soundtrack supports the action-packed story about a general who became a gladiator and political scheming is smoothly connected to the revenge plot. The ending is a great example on how the ending can be both sad and uplifting at the same time.

"Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines" provides some decent new laughs but the plot structure is mostly the same as in the two previous Terminator films. At least the ending is pleasantly surprising.

There's nothing new about the premise of "Snowpiercer" and the plot is so predictable and full of absurdities that it's hard to take seriously. The film is also unnecessarily slow at times. The high quality special effects aren't enough to save the film.

"Bound" is an erotic thriller that Hitchcock would've appreciated. The Wachowski brothers focus on thrills and atmosphere instead of talking and that's why the film works so well. This is definitely their best film and also one of the best thrillers of the '90s.

"Bound" is atmosheric and very captivating film without being too over the top and it accurately and shamelessly shows us how desire for sex and money controls people. It's also good that lesbian characters in the film aren't some walking stereotypes but real people.
"Bound" is an erotic thriller that Hitchcock would've appreciated. The Wachowski brothers focus on thrills and atmosphere instead of talking and that's why the film works so well. This is definitely their best film and also one of the best thrillers of the '90s.

Painted white walls can also look good and watching them is about as interesting as watching this pretentious film.
