Ferocious thoroughly tough and testosterone-loaded vampire-modern cowboy top-notch adrenaline-fuelled pulse-pounder action hard-edged, violent movie!
From beginning to end, Caleb (Adrian Pasdar as a James Dean-type ) is always all cowboyed out with boots with rowel spurs, hat, cigarette, and manly stud attitude.
Young cowboy Caleb is the male predator till he find Severen, a careless... read more

I'm in the mood for an old school vampire flick with some great actors. Oh did you say check out Near Dark? Sure don't mind if I do. I can't believe this is the directorial debut of Kathryn Bigelow. This is what boosted her into a career that produced Zero Dark Thirty and The Hurt Locker. It should be quite interesting to see what she started with. Eric Red who writes here is also known for a few ... read more

Near Dark is as good as the genre gets

The best thing about this film (and it Must have been intentional) is that there is no mention of the word 'Vampire' on the box, or in the movie.

The entire genre of suave, sophisticated vampires drinking blood from a wine glass while listning to Handel with their pinky fingers extended was boring by the time someone got done describing it to me. Near Dark is a more gritty, realis... read more

Description: One night, Caleb Colton (Adrian Pasdar), a young man in a small town, meets an attractive young drifter named Mae (Jenny Wright). Just before sunrise, she bites him on the neck then runs off. The rising sun causes Caleb's flesh to begin to burn. Mae comes with a group of roaming vampires and takes him away. The most unsociable of all the vampires, the callous and sociopathic Severen, wants to kill Caleb, but Mae reveals she has turned him into a vampire. Their charismatic leader, Jesse Hooker (Lance Henriksen), reluctantly agrees to allow Caleb to remain with them for a week to see if he can learn to hunt and become a trusted me ... (more)

Slant’s 100 Greatest Horror Films – 2018 Edition (100 movies items)

"The zenith of a career phase defined by sneakily subversive genre films, Kathryn Bigelow’s melancholic Near Dark remains a singular milestone in the evolution of the vampire myth. It’s a delirious fever dream grounded periodically by masterfully constructed scenes of carnage and the rooting of its mythology in the period’s twin boogeymen of addiction and infection. An excellent cast of pulp icons—Bill Paxton and Lance Henriksen are particularly unhinged—bring restless energy to the sto"

"Kathryn Bigelow got the cast of Aliens and made pretty great 80's vampire film. The soundtrack is just so 1980's and great. Bill Paxton was really great and gave one of my favorite performances of his in this film."

An average movie

“I wasn't really sure what to expect from this movie but since I have a weak spot for Kathryn Bigelow's work, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, even though this movie has become a cult classic following its release, I actually had a hard time to really care about the damned thing. I mean, the beginning was not bad and they managed to deliver a nice mood with a nice soundtrack but, from the moment that Caleb turned into a vampire, it became just way too pedestrian for me. Sure,  it was still watchable but, in my opinion, Bigelow didn't add anything really new or interesting to the genre. In fact, the biggest issue I had was with the 3rd act which turned out to be even more tedious. Basically, somehow, out of completely nowhere, the main character managed to find a cure against vampir” read more

2017 Horror Journal (47 movies items)

" Although it's drab, unoriginal and uninspired, this flick warrants a watch thanks to some strong performances and an absorbing climax. But if you want a great eighties vampire film you're better off sticking with The Lost Boys or Fright Night for a film with more personality."

" Easily the best 1980s vampire movie made (even if the vampire word is never said - their condition is a blood illness). The atmosphere is fantastic combined with Tangerine Dream's music. The breathtaking Jenny Wright with a ice cream cone and Adrian Paul's cocky cowboy are beautiful together and the vampire family of Lance Henriksen, Bill Paxton and Jenette Goldstein having a small "Aliens" reunion is a wonder to behold. A deserved cult classic and the first true glimpse of what enormous force "
