Another gem from Michael Mann. Visually spectacular, with a cool soundtrack and some high octane moments. Great cast too, with Javier Bardem, Jamie Foxx, Jada Pinkett Smith, Mark Ruffalo and Tom Cruise. Mann's singular style is on display once more.

Toby White's rating:

This is possibly one of the most beautifully shot films in recent years, particularly in terms of colour. Vittorio Storaro is a master cinematographer.
Kate Winslet delivers an excellent performance but the film as a whole is rather mediocre. Resembles more of a theatre production in ways.

Any Given Sunday (1999)
Took me years to get around to watching this. By now it is pretty dated. Watched it to see Pacino and Oliver Stone's direction. A pretty solid film with a classic Pacino speech.

Sea of Love (1989) (1989)
Rewatch
I've always loved this film. Love the title track 'Sea of Love' by Phil Phillips. There's something about the atmosphere in this that I really like. And Ellen Barkin is smoking hot. The fruit fondling scene at the supermarket is spectacularly cheesy. Great score too by Trevor Jones.

An awful mess of a film and a shitty end to a trilogy.

Poetry (2010)
A heartfelt film with an undertone of sexual tension and repression. Very peaceful despite the underlying horrific incident which haunts the film's atmosphere. Jeong-Hie Yun is exceptional in the lead role, delivering a very powerful but understated performance.

Zodiac (2007)
Rewatch
A haunting film that stays with you and keeps you wondering who's the Zodiac. The most disturbing thing about it is the absence of certainty and the failure of the law to capture and outsmart the Zodiac.

Really enjoyed this and think it was one of Spike Lee's best in a few years. Delroy Lindo is brilliant, the stand out performance. The premise is great. The mood shifts all over the place, in a good way.
Marvin Gaye's 'What's Goin On' dominates the film, its presence is felt throughout as its songs fade in and out at keys points. Delroy Lindo even sings a track Acapella. The film can be seen as a visual accompaniment to the classic album, a music video for the entire album.

Catwoman (2004)
An absolute disasterpiece. CGI is over the top. No saving grace for anything in this film. But Halle Berry is beautiful.
Toby White's rating:

Box of Moonlight (1997)
A tame, mediocre film with half-assed performances and a plodding aimless story.
Toby White's rating:

Radio Days (1987)
I can't say much about this one. Has all the usual traits of a Woody Allen film.
Toby White's rating:

The Age of Innocence (1993) (1993)
Beautiful to look at but extremely dull. One of my least favourite of Scorsese's.
Toby White's rating:

Spirits of the Dead (1968)
Atmospheric and visually interesting. Fellini's segment with the devil manifesting as a little girl is particularly odd. Could see elements of Fellini's influence over David Lynch on display here, in terms of visuals, atmosphere and sound design.
The Fonda segment has a haunting, ominous soundscape.

Toby White's rating:

The Flower of My Secret (1995)
An understated Almodovar, with less focus on dramatic action.
Toby White's rating:

Stylistically beautiful. Incredibly dark interiors and naturalistic soft lighting help to create a sombre mood. Civil war and sexual tension.
