The best monster movie ever? I seriously doubt that making such a claim would be false. Why? I plan to tell you. First of all, Gwoemul propably had the best plot I have ever seen in a movie of this genre. It all starts off seeming like some cliched Godzilla-copy, but the moment we meet our so-called main character, Kan-Du, his occasional dialogue and overall attitude prepare us for something diffe... read more

"Have any of you heard it? The heartbreak of a parent who's lost a child... When a parent's heart breaks, the sound can travel for miles. So I really need to say this to you. Be as nice to Gang-du as you can. Don't scold him, okay?"

Koreans are often renowned for their motion pictures, as Korean filmmakers produce horror films and action-thrillers with more verve and creativity than... read more

The movie started off really good, with the first 1/3 or so being some of the best monster action I've seen. The effects are great through out the entire movie (fire is hard to do so I won't count the ending). My only big issue with this movie is how it gets really hard to tell how much time has passed. A lot of things point towards the movie being set during a couple of weeks (the military respon... read more

1001 Movies ... my own version (2000's) (133 movies items)

" Notes: Eventually, I thought it was pretty good but, somehow, I still had some mixed feelings about the whole thing. Still, there was some really good stuff. For example, you get to see the monster almost right away which is quite unusual. The directing was also pretty good too. I don’t know, maybe, the problem was the fact that they tried to seamlessly combine a monster movie, a comedy and a drama. I mean, it was definitely a bold move and I have a lot of respect for the makers for at least"

"4.11. Bongin hirviökauhistelussa on omat hirviöhetkensä ja omat kauhunhetkensä. Syntytarina huvittaa, ja pa(r)h(a)immillaan elokuva muistuttaa Jokerin tavoin, kuinka we live in a society. Latteuksien alle on kuitenkin käykeytynyt ihan oikeinkin pätö tarina, jossa on ihan oikeita tunteitakin."

"15.2. DVD Satiiri on kovin paikkaansa sidottua ja hienosti peiteltyä, eikä kaikkineen varmasti aukea ilman perehtymistä, mikäli heikäläinen yhteiskunta on vähääkään vieras. Amerikkalaisten epäluotettavuus toki on universaali teema. Ulkopintaisesti vimmaisen mainio hirviöelokuva. Pinnan alla, em. lisäksi, perin outo komedia sekä yllättävän perinteinen perhedraama. En kyllä muista, koska olisin viimeksi nauranut näin kovaa tyttärensä menetystä surevaa isää, tämän sisaru"

Slant's 100 Best Sci-Fi Movies of All Time (100 movies items)

"Scott Wilson’s deliciously hammy presence as the American captain in the opening scene indicates that Bong Joon-ho’s The Host is, in the broadest sense, a politically charged diatribe against both American and Korean political cover-up machinations of misinformation. But that aspect is rather bland in comparison to what else the film has to offer. For, like any great monster movie, this isn’t a film strictly about a monster—or, for that matter, the monstrous countries that spawned it—b"
