Best Films of 2006

Sort by: Showing 1-50 of 100
Decade: Rating: List Type:
People who added this item 1281 Average listal rating (860 ratings) 6.6 IMDB Rating 7.1
Rocky Balboa (2006)

#100

It's better than the catastrophe of Rocky V; but nothing special and barely worth the effort.
Stehako's rating:
Nothing too special about the doc, but of course the music is fantastic.
Stehako's rating:
People who added this item 417 Average listal rating (237 ratings) 7.2 IMDB Rating 7.4
Jesus Camp (2007)
One of the scariest films of the year.

Stehako's rating:
People who added this item 113 Average listal rating (63 ratings) 6.7 IMDB Rating 7.2
The Aura (2005)

Love, murder and taxidermy
Stehako's rating:
People who added this item 1292 Average listal rating (779 ratings) 6.4 IMDB Rating 6.5
Step Up (2006)
I refused to see this one until my wife, who loves dance movies, convinced me. I must say, while it's nothing special, I did enjoy the dancing and the chemistry of the leads is obvious. The likability of the actors is what makes this watchable.
Stehako's rating:
People who added this item 5 Average listal rating (4 ratings) 6.3 IMDB Rating 7.4
A documentary about the rise of the sneaker industry.
Stehako's rating:
People who added this item 151 Average listal rating (65 ratings) 6.8 IMDB Rating 6.6
Bubble (2005) (2006)
Wow, this is a difficult movie to critique. I think Soderbergh is so cool, with his experimentations. Here he enlisted non-actors for all the roles, using very little scripted dialogue.
Stehako's rating:
The editing helps keep this film interesting as we are literally watching one conversation with one woman nearly the entire film. The dialogue could have been so much better with such a clever idea.
Stehako's rating:
People who added this item 112 Average listal rating (65 ratings) 6.8 IMDB Rating 7.4
A documentary about a man who lived multiple lifetimes with his life cut short. The title is a little bit deceiving as it was more about post-Beatles Lennon in general. I was hoping to learn a lot of new info but it basically rehashed most of what we generally know.
Stehako's rating:
People who added this item 139 Average listal rating (83 ratings) 7 IMDB Rating 7.1
Venus (2007)
O'Toole is the ideal cool.
Stehako's rating:

Stick It (2006)
Stehako's rating:
Oh Berenice!

Stehako's rating:

Sadly this is Altman's final film; but still an enjoyable one with some decent songs sung by good actors.
Stehako's rating:
People who added this item 2303 Average listal rating (1407 ratings) 6.6 IMDB Rating 6.4
I thought this was going to more of a modern/hip take on the story, with the way the cool trailer previewed it. I found it to be rather dull in the end.
Stehako's rating:
People who added this item 339 Average listal rating (213 ratings) 6.8 IMDB Rating 7.1
Wahlberg is still trying hard to make us like him and take him seriously.
I like the story (based on a true story), but it's so watered-down and wholly unoriginal in its filmmaking.

Still I'm a sucker for the underdog!
Stehako's rating:
People who added this item 435 Average listal rating (276 ratings) 6.4 IMDB Rating 6.9
Harsh Times (2006)
A frustrating movie that's tough to get into, considering how unlikable the leads are.
A different type of role for Bale that never seems to be put to good use.
But it is pretty bad ass
Stehako's rating:
People who added this item 4385 Average listal rating (2839 ratings) 6.7 IMDB Rating 6.9
This film will make you fall in love with Anne Hathaway and Emilie Blunt, will solidify that granite of a career of Meryl Streep, and make you realize Adrian Grenier will probably not have a career outside of "Entourage" for awhile.
Stehako's rating:
People who added this item 1695 Average listal rating (960 ratings) 6.7 IMDB Rating 7.1

A disappointing follow-up to the similar "Waking Life". I felt the actors' talents weren't used properly but the creative animation is still worth the watch, even if the story isn't entirely worthy.
Stehako's rating:
People who added this item 470 Average listal rating (313 ratings) 5 IMDB Rating 5.5
A great no-need-to-think comedy.
Stehako's rating:
People who added this item 135 Average listal rating (66 ratings) 5.4 IMDB Rating 6.3
One of Christopher Guest's weaker films but it is still filled with clever moments and a nice smack to the face of award-chasers and film industry. It's easy to do, but doesn't get done enough.
Stehako's rating:
People who added this item 105 Average listal rating (69 ratings) 6.7 IMDB Rating 6.8
Bon film.
Stehako's rating:
People who added this item 1951 Average listal rating (1255 ratings) 6.5 IMDB Rating 7
Déjà Vu (2006)
I feel like I've seen this Tony Scott film before.

Stehako's rating:
Documenting the unfortunate lives Sudani boys looking for a better life in the US
Stehako's rating:
People who added this item 1165 Average listal rating (747 ratings) 5.9 IMDB Rating 6.6
Idiocracy (2007)
The film Wall-E copied, with less stellar results; but an eerie, and sometimes funny, look into a probable future.
Stehako's rating:
People who added this item 1679 Average listal rating (985 ratings) 7.5 IMDB Rating 7.6
Volver (2006)
Cruz is sexy as usual, but the pace was a little slow.
Stehako's rating:
People who added this item 167 Average listal rating (96 ratings) 6.2 IMDB Rating 6.6
Factotum (2005)
Matt is a likable asshole in this non-empathetic story of a an unorthodox factotum.
Stehako's rating:
People who added this item 198 Average listal rating (128 ratings) 7 IMDB Rating 7.2
Glory Road (2006)
Stehako's rating:
People who added this item 1110 Average listal rating (675 ratings) 6.7 IMDB Rating 7.1

Probably my least favorite WWII film made in modern cinema era, but still decent and an important insight into the US's faulty propaganda schemes.
Stehako's rating:
People who added this item 1013 Average listal rating (679 ratings) 5.6 IMDB Rating 6
Miami Vice (2006)
Besides Phil Collins (modernized) and its setting, this is nothing like the TV show. But damn these guys are cool.
Stehako's rating:
People who added this item 1763 Average listal rating (1228 ratings) 6.6 IMDB Rating 6.9
Crank (2006)
A wild ride that is stylish but silly. Once I stopped taking it seriously I enjoyed it a bit more. I like the concept and I like some of the editing and style choices; but overall it's incomplete.
Stehako's rating:
People who added this item 874 Average listal rating (419 ratings) 6.4 IMDB Rating 6.5
Tideland (2006)
Stehako's rating:
People who added this item 1165 Average listal rating (774 ratings) 5.2 IMDB Rating 5.7
Nacho Libre (2006)
Jared Hess's follow-up to 'Napoleon Dyamite' was less than stellar; but Jack Black can certainly entertain under any circumstance. His two musical numbers are what put this into the top 50.
Stehako's rating:
People who added this item 196 Average listal rating (98 ratings) 6.8 IMDB Rating 7.6
This film will get you pissed off with how simple of an idea the Electric Car is and how we're wasting so much money and ruining air quality by not producing them.
Stehako's rating:
People who added this item 40 Average listal rating (20 ratings) 7.6 IMDB Rating 7.8
A tense documentary on an endurance yacht race in the 60s that didn't go... as planned.
Stehako's rating:
People who added this item 224 Average listal rating (105 ratings) 6.8 IMDB Rating 6.8

Diane Krueger is beautiful and the opera scene is one of the best scenes of the year.
Stehako's rating:
People who added this item 1480 Average listal rating (1039 ratings) 6.9 IMDB Rating 7.2
The Descent (2005)
A nice surprise. I like spelunking and I like the idea of several women discovering a new cave. What I typically don't like are the movies that think they are scary but adding jump-scares and gore. This one is actually scary and it treads in the Herzog's "Aguirre, The Wrath of God" territory of as far as progressing into madness.
The one thing that kept this from being even higher on the list is the very end. I think they should have had her be killed by freak traffic accident instead of the stupid jump-scare, you know, the ones I'm never impressed by.
Stehako's rating:
People who added this item 63 Average listal rating (33 ratings) 7.3 IMDB Rating 7.3
I love crosswords, so naturally this was entertaining.
Stehako's rating:
People who added this item 933 Average listal rating (556 ratings) 7.2 IMDB Rating 7.4
Two acting masters head off in this unusual film about unusual relationships.
Stehako's rating:

Tsotsi (2005)
Beautifully filmed bought a tough one to watch.
Stehako's rating:
People who added this item 2220 Average listal rating (1446 ratings) 7.2 IMDB Rating 7.6
A little venue for Ferrell, and a great supporting cast make this quarky dramedy worth a look.

Stehako's rating:
People who added this item 2466 Average listal rating (1606 ratings) 6.2 IMDB Rating 6.9

Certainly an improvement from the second, thanks to PS Hoffman and Keri Russell and more intelligent plotting and action.
Stehako's rating:
People who added this item 83 Average listal rating (39 ratings) 6.2 IMDB Rating 5.8
Stoned (2005)
The wild months leading up to Brian Jones' death are entertaining indeed.
Stehako's rating:
People who added this item 890 Average listal rating (521 ratings) 7.2 IMDB Rating 7.5
Such a beautiful film. Like 'The Fountain', I could watch it over and over; but the story was just too negative all the way through until the end when I didn't care enough about the characters to feel differently.
Stehako's rating:
People who added this item 1554 Average listal rating (1012 ratings) 6.3 IMDB Rating 6.6
Monster House (2006)
The first film I saw in 3D and it was fun family entertainment. A good set of voice talent and an interesting enough storyline.
Stehako's rating:
People who added this item 523 Average listal rating (337 ratings) 7.5 IMDB Rating 7.4
An Australian Western. The opening scene is great but it begins to drag by the third act.

Stehako's rating:
People who added this item 3847 Average listal rating (2495 ratings) 6 IMDB Rating 6.4
This was a fun movie with a good cast throughout. I hear they are making a second one with an even bigger cast, including Amy Adams and Jonah Hill.
Stehako's rating:
People who added this item 353 Average listal rating (187 ratings) 5.6 IMDB Rating 6
With such a great cast and concept this should have an amazing film; but somehow it failed to ignite enough interest and I pushed myself to watch the entire thing. I rank it this high because of Blanchett's acting and the direction from Soderbergh.

Bobby (2006) (2006)
A great cast of Emilio Estevez's friends and family(Nick Cannon kind of ruined an emotional moment by being too emotional) mix story lines in the Ambassador Hotel the night RFK died. LCD never looked like so much fun!

Messed up and beautiful... relentlessly messed up and beautiful
