HV Presents: 10 Most Vile Villains of Cinema!

Saw II (2005)
Jigsaw

An obvious choice. He likes to think of himself as a healer, the media portrays him as a deranged prophet of sorts. I call him "an inhuman sadist on a wheelchair". True, he has never directly killed anyone but forcing a gun into another guy's head and telling him to pull the trigger is still murder, and that counts.

His m.o. is that he puts victims who he finds unworthy of their lives in complex, torturous traps which reflect their sins. They can be either physical, psychological or a test, a series of traps to survive to the very end. Failure to pass results in death, obviously + he also gives them very little time.

What makes him so different from the others in this list is that he doesn't kill for pleasure or for money. He does it because he believes he is making a difference. He literally takes the worldly power of time and the worldly power of judgment in his hands and makes people suffer for their sins / laziness. Once they fail, he turns a blind eye to them in most cases.

No-one has the right to judge and play with other people's lives and make them go through such a torturous process. That is inhuman on such a high level. But of course, his rationality in his voice is what keeps from people calling him utterly insane.

Hell, some even call him a hero, a saviour... seriously? What the fuck?

Anton Chigurh

Anton Chigurh is modern cinema's most creepiest villain ever. A modern mask-less, captive bolt pistol wielding Jason Voorhees. Despite having human appearance, he is as soulless and heartless as the original Terminator. An unstoppable machine of bloody violence and paranoia.

Chigurh is a man with no solid ground under him; Just a knee-deep water of explosions, blood and violence. A man who could wipe out an entire city and not give a fuck about it.

The worst mistake you can do is look at him. That's all the reason he needs to kill you. 90% of all the people he meets in his way, he kills them, remorselessly. Hell, even Jason, Freddy or Pinhead look at their victims, whereas he just steps over them, with nary a change on his face. Also, that coin-toss...

Amon Goeth

What makes this character more vile, and disgusting, than all the others is because Amon Goeth actually existed, back in WWII.

The Captain

The unnamed Captain, masterfully played by one of yesteryear's best supporting actors, Strother Martin, is one of cinema's most hated character. A cruel, nihilistic, sadistic, and thin voiced son of a bitch who has little or no regard for his guards or the inmates. Even though the guards are as sadistic as he is, it is The Captain himself who has made everyone his sheep, or rather pigs, and doesn't give a two-second damn one way or another.

Also, his stubbornness and reluctance to drive a seriously injured Luke to the nearest hospital but rather to the prison, which is very, very far, results in the death of the much beloved blue-eyed hero. But does The Captain give a damn? No, not one stinking percent.

Also, when the dogs die, he just spits on the ground and leaves. Dude, seriously, a dog. Dog deaths always choke me up!

Hellraiser (1987)
Pinhead

Angel to some. Demon to others. Ultimate horror icon to me. Seriously, Pinhead was different than all the previous horror icons who were either bumbling, mute or comical. He takes things very seriously, has a humour only he can relate to, and always gets what he wants.

This very leader of hell itself is not only utterly quotable but a distinguished, if badly dehumanized, "gentleman" in a sense. He gives you both pain and pleasure but since he has a very wicked notion of pleasure, it is pain and pain. The whole Hellraiser story, masterminded by Clive Barker, is always drenched in blood, macabre, sickening violence and disgusting moments; So why not make a character vile and disgusting but noble to go along with it?

If you want to witness his near-unlimited power, but bound by his greed and lust, and an angle for surrealism, then watch the original or Hellraiser: Hellseeker", the only worthy film in the franchise.

That being said, I'm now afraid to solve this Rubik Cube that's next to me!

Alien (1979)
Alien / Xenomorph

This Ridley Scott masterpiece had a tremendous impact on sci-fi and action. H.R. Giger's titular character had an even bigger impact on screen monsters, making Alien (the character) one of the most recognizable movie creatures of all time. And also one of the most aggressive, ruthless and unforgiving.

The only non-human in this list, Aliens, or Xenomorphs as they are known in Cameron's sequel, are the merciless of killers with a devastatingly painful way of killing their host. Their inability of recognizing who is in their way and who their main target is makes them one of the most feared creatures in movie history. If you wanna know more about their one-minded behaviour, I suggest you watch Alien vs. Predator.

This is how they kill: They "inject" a "baby" in their hosts' mouth through their mouths and the baby alien is born through a violent birth. Within hours they mature and they repeat the drill.

Jane Hudson

The inclusion of Jane Hudson is quite a questionable entry in this list but consider these factors;

Driven out of the spotlight because of horrible aging (Note: just like the current burned-out actresses), and jealous of her sister's, Blanche, popularity, Jane breaks Blanche's legs and confines her in the upper room of the home where they live. As time progresses, Jane even starts feeding her rats and birds. More time progresses and Jane literally kicks around Blanche when she finds out she had been using the phone to call a doctor, and then ties her up, gagged and all, in her bedroom. When all that is done, she goes into her Annie Wilkes phase and kills the housemaid.

It may not seem much on paper but on reel it is quite disturbing to watch. Jane uses a lot of psychological and physical punishment against her sister.

How's that for a villain? Not only the character was vile, but also started the psycho-biddy sub-genre in horror. The character of Jane Hudson is also now one of the finest examples of horror-of-personality.

Percy Wetmore

Percy is cinema's most loser character. He is an annoying little prick with zero empathy and soul. The one guy I wouldn't mind bashing his head in with Tallahassee's baseball bat.

His child-like and diminutive facade hides a Mr. Hyde-esque monster inside. Not only he crushes Mr. Jingles with his foot, spits out slurs and makes life a living seventh-level hell for others, but also purposely botches up Eduard's execution because he simply wanted to see "what would happen if you didn't wet the sponge". The others can't touch him because of his powerful contacts and Percy takes pleasure in that fact. Not only he waves that fact around in their faces like a flyer but takes (dis)advantage of it and struts around like a school-bully just appointed class president, becoming hateful at each progressing second.

In the end, he meets his well deserved fate... a state much worse than death, if you ask me.

Saw V (2008)
Det. Hoffman

Hoffman is, in all senses, the Jason Voorhees of the franchise. He so shamelessly violates, and perverts, the rules and regulations of Jigsaw and the purpose of the traps / the purpose of the story that it is clear to everyone that the seemingly perfect Jigsaw made a mistake in "hiring" him as his apprentice.

He starts out as a Jigsaw-killer wannabe and gets tested by Jigsaw himself, to which he is set free. Not only is Hoffman a cruel, sadistic killer, but has no morals, no regard, and absolutely no sympathy or feelings for anything or anyone.

Jigsaw, technically speaking, is not a killer, but he is a villain all the same. The *true* killer is Hoffman. If you want more proof, check out his unstoppable rampage in SAW 3D and his eerie calmness in SAW V

Mr. Blonde

In one of the most coolest flicks ever made, played by one of the coolest actors ever, Mr. Blonde is the most sadistic and aggressive "dog" from the group.

This disturbingly volatile character was mistakenly given an unusually large amount of elbow room to show-off his craziness. When the others leave him with the doomed cop, he turns on the radio, dances to it, slashes the cop's face several times with the razor and finally cuts off his ear, making a cruel joke along the way.

But that scene (which has gone to become iconic) does not show you his craziness; it confirms it. Long minutes prior to that scene, we only hear about it through Mr. Pink and Mr. White. Also, the opening scene foreshadows his nature. His introduction and his calm, cool as a cucumber attitude also gives you some hints. By the time the above scene ends, you know you've just witnessed a sadistic mind in motion.

Hello and welcome to yet another list of mine!

10 is a perfect number for many but a painfully small number for me. I like stretching my lists to 20, 50, 100, 500, if I can mange it, or more. It gives me pleasure to make such a large list but since I was in the mood for something small, I came up with this!

Now, you may notice that many of the world's best known villains aren't in this list (Vader, Lector, Bates, just to name a few). The reason being I wanted to add villains who were unstoppable, an endless Rube Goldberg machine in motion. Their main raison d'etre is killing people, that's it. Be it philosophical, reasonable, for money, or for fun, these ten refused to step down and many continued long even after their death.

Villains come in all shapes and sizes, some are tragic, some are born that way. To me they are quite cliche, although you may find some in my list which may fulfill the above points. These 10 are so vile, so disgusting, that you have zero empathy for them and, if given a chance, would torture them as painfully as possible. Only a nutcase would call them heroes or "a killer with a rational purpose" or stuff like that!

So remember, this is a one man list and yes, Vader ain't here!
