A classic and suspenseful masterpiece!

"Leaning... leaning... safe and secure from all alarms. Leaning... leaning... leaning on the everlasting arms."

Charles Laughton's The Night of the Hunter is another definitive example of a monochrome masterpiece tragically overlooked and criticised upon initial release. Director Charles Laughton was reportedly so disappointed and saddened by the film's poor critical and commercial ... read more

The Night of the Hunter is truly a stand-alone masterwork. A horror movie with qualities of a Grimm fairy tale, it stars a sublimely sinister Robert Mitchum as a traveling preacher named Harry Powell, whose nefarious motives for marrying a fragile widow, played by Shelley Winters, are uncovered by her terrified young children. Graced by images of eerie beauty and a sneaky sense of humor, this ethe... read more

Since I kept hearing great things about this flick, I was really eager to check it out. Well, I have to admit it, it is a really odd feature, the only directing effort by Charles Laughton, Robert Mitchum’s favorite movies of his one, and, unsurprisingly, it was a critical and financial flop when it was released. Honestly, could you expect such a weird dark tale to reach an audience back in the 5... read more

Fantastic

“I love film and have done since forever. Night of the Hunter is not quite in my all-time favourite movies, but it is a film I respect very highly. The only disappointment was the final ten minutes, which felt tacked on and didn't suit the tone of the rest of the movie. Everything else though is fantastic. The story is compelling and managed to chill and shock me, the dialogue is both thoughtful and tense, the lullaby and opening sequence are hard to forget and Shelley Winters, Lillian Gish and Billy Chapin give fine performances. But I will remember Night of the Hunter always for the marvellous cinematography that remains interesting and and beautifully constructed while enhancing the mood, Charles Laughton's superb direction in one of his best achievements in either acting or directing an” read more

"“It’s a great thriller. It just kind of seeps into your bones…. It’s terrifying and heartbreaking and you’re on the edge of your seat the whole time…. Lillian Gish has this herd of children that she takes care of in the movie and each one is allowed a great personality.” - Rose McGowan “I love it because of Robert Mitchum. This, to me, is his definitive performance. He never got much attention from it because the film itself was not successful, but he is brilliant in it…. He m"

"8.11. Tallenne Uusintakatselu. Tämä viiden tähden elokuva ei kyllä sitten millään kuulunut siihen joukkkoon, jonka olisin olettanut uusintakatselulla päätyvän pisteytyksen laskuun. Sinällään kerronnallisesti ja kuvastoltaan yhä se ainutlaatuinen mallikappale, mutta ykstulkintaisesti yltiÜpositiiviseen vireeseen päättäminen tuntui minua häiritsevän. Kertonee minustakin jotain. Toisaalta Raamattua Oikein Tulkitsevan Lillian Gishin näyttäessä Jumalan Rakkauden Todellisen Luo"
