Western Perfection

If someone said to me, 'You can only own one Western DVD for the rest of your life', without a hesitation, this would be it. Not even the legendary 'Once Upon a Time in the West' or classics such as 'Magnificent Seven', 'High Noon', 'Stagecoach' and others would even be considered if there was just one choice. What I'm trying to say is this the ultimate western.... by a WIDE MARG... read more

"You see, in this world there's two kinds of people, my friend: Those with loaded guns and those who dig. You dig."

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is hands down the greatest western of all time - the third and final of Sergio Leone's trilogy of westerns with Clint Eastwood is the best of the bunch.

This film succeeds in every aspect where its predecessors failed, mak... read more

This film combines big operatic visuals and satisfying but unrealistic action set to the sound of a Morricone soundtrack that has a unique Spanish/Western feel...a true masterpiece by Sergio Leone. Leone does not care about the practical or the plausible or how long he takes to tell his story, but builds on his imagination and having an abundance of Western movie cliches, It feels like a tribut... read more

My Favorite Characters in Film (7 movies items)

"Tuco: You laugh at him, you laugh with him, you get angry at him, you get angry with him. When he visits his brother, the priest, you even feel sorry for him. With all his flaws (and there are many) Tuco is one of the most empathic characters in movies. You can't help but love that guy and hope he finds the treasure in the end. Sorry Blondie, this movie is Tuco's all the way through."

Films I've seen on celluloid in the digital era (134 movies items)

"FORMAT: 35mm PRINT QUALITY: ★★★½ NOTES: MGM’s 2003 extended English version, reprinted in 2008 by the BFI and Park Circus. Several light scratches and a straight line down the middle stuck through the entirety of the print. Changeovers did not have cue marks but did little harm to the audio except on the fourth. Fifth reel experiences some damage midway; these imperfections, however, very well suit spaghetti westerns like this. DATE: June 21st 2021 CINEMA: The Prince Charles Cinema LOC"

Larri's picks: My Top40 of All-time (40 movies items)

"The Good, The Bad and The Ugly directed by Sergio Leone Sergio Leone had quite possibly the most recognizable audiovisual voice in film's hundred-and-twenty-year history. The way he composed shots. How he found once-in-a-lifetime faces to be immortalized in both minor and major roles. How he incorporated graphic design to title sequences. How he took his time in a way that would be considered sinful in the economic Hollywood storytelling. Spellbinding storytelling with visuals. Spellbinding sto"

“Taking an entirely sardonic attitude in its depiction of the west, "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" is the final instalment in Sergio Leone's unofficial Dollars trilogy. "A Fistful of Dollars" and "For A Few Dollars More" were unequivocally episodic and exponentially expelled to classic status by Clint Eastwood's laconic, enigmatic Man With No Name. Central to the series and its distinctive visual language were the landscapes of New Mexico, explicitly showcased rough, bloody violence and highly ambiguous morals and mercenary motives of the characters. "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" deviated from the blueprint set by Leone in delivering more adeptly composed cinematography and a cohesive, substantial narrative worthy of its near-three-hour runtime whilst retaining and extending the showdo” read more

Slant's 100 Best Westerns of All Time (100 movies items)

"It seems inconceivable now that spaghetti westerns, specifically those served up by Sergio Leone, were once considered to be somehow less faithful to the western tradition than Hollywood’s crippled efforts of the same time period. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is surely one of the most compelling validations of the western genre’s most elemental touchstones: the quiet stoicism of men who were islands unto themselves, the necessity of according respect to that unforgiving bitch that is the L"

1001 Movies ... my own version (1960's) (101 movies items)

" Notes: Basically, it is my favorite Western. Indeed, I started to watch it as a kid with my father and I was actually planning to watch it again this time with my step-son but I ended up watching it on my own. I guess it is just too slow-paced for him. Anyway, I had recently watched again ‘A Fistful of Dollars’ and ‘For a Few Dollars More’ so I obviously had to round up this trilogy with this seminal classic. In my opinion, it clearly stands apart from the rest of the trilogy as the sc"
