Beautiful but smug

The cinematography is brilliant, and so vivid you almost forget you are watching a black & white movie. It's been well preserved and looks as if it could have been released yesterday. And the locales were so interesting that Vienna seems like another character (whether it was shot there or not). But maybe today's audiences are just too smart, but I never trusted anything or anyone, so any shock... read more

This film was a really good film-noir film. It is a really tense film because of the chemistry between the characters and the way this film is filmed. It made me feel really great because I never realised at first of how awesome this film really is. It is one of those films that is really loved because of its absolutely outstanding cast especially because Orson Welles is in it. This film is about ... read more

Wasn't quite enjoying this movie and I was just wondering what made people rate this movie more than 8. I was about it give it just a six star rating but again the last scene, may be just 5 last seconds of the movie made me give one more star.

I love these kind of movies that has such an unpredictable endings. Didn't love the whole movie but the last, of course.

An out of work pulp fiction novelist, Holly Martins, arrives in a post war Vienna divided into sectors by the victorious allies, and where a shortage of supplies has lead to a flourishing black market. He arrives at the invitation of an ex-school friend, Harry Lime, who has offered him a job, only to discover that Lime has recently died in a peculiar traffic accident. From talking to Lime's friends and associates Martins soon notices that some of the stories are inconsistent, and determines to discover what really happened to Harry Lime.

50 Moments of Cinematic Wonder (50 movies items)

"THE THIRD MAN - HARRY LIME APPEARS Carol Reed's 'The Third Man' pulls off a neat trick in making its villain, the elusive Harry Lime, easily the most charismatic character despite his vile misdeeds. A good deal of credit must go to Orson Welles' performance with its sly-eyed twinkles and the perfect timing of his famous, self-penned cuckoo-clock speech. But none of this would have quite the same impact without Reed's masterful introduction of Harry which imbues him with the qualities of a Puck-"

" Where: At Home, Netflix Instant Thoughts: Wow! I loved this movie. I didn't remember just from the title that this was considered a classic, though I figured if Orson Welles was involved there might be a worthwhile movie to spend time on while I was stuck in bed sick all day. I am glad I did because this movie was fantastic. I was so impressed at the cinematography, beautiful high contrast shots and framing and silhouettes, it really reminded me of those days in college when I'd watch 2-3 f"

Movie Reviews (301-350) (50 movies items)

" One of the best post-WW2 film noir movies that have ever been made where they even reunite the two best actors from the Mercury Theater, Orson Welles and Joseph Cotten. The hunt for the mysterious Harry Lime is gripping from the arrival in Vienna till it all ends in a memorable manhunt down in the city's sewer tunnels. The music hits like a bullet in the back of my bones and Alida Valli is gorgeous. A perfect film."
