Since this movie is a classic and since it was included in the '1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die' list, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, even though it was indeed pretty good, to be honest, it didn't completely blow me away. TCM’s Essentials Vol 2: Another 52 Must See Movies (52 movies items)

"“This is probably the most compelling I’ve ever seen Joan Crawford in a film…. Ann Blyth was a very interesting actress to me because she was so doll-like. She had a very ethereal, almost otherworldly kind of facial mask. You don’t know what is going to happen to her or come out of her. And she’s just this monster – your worst night as a kid.” - Alec Baldwin “I love Mildred Pierce. Besides it being a big comeback for Joan Crawford, I think it’s about as definitive a Warner Bro"

" Notes: Even though it was indeed pretty good, to be honest, it didn't completely blow me away. First of all, even though Joan Crawford delivered a solid performance and won at the time the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role, in my opinion, her character should have been more complex. Indeed, even though Mildred Pierce was first presented as a possible murderer, Crawford slowly removed any evidence that this woman was anything else than perfect and it backfired as it made this wom"

Slant’s 100 Best Film Noirs of All Time (100 movies items)

"American crime films and pulp writing aren’t normally considered as paragons of feminism, as they often see women as figures of asexualized competency or as femme fatales, those murderous succubae who use sex to socially empower themselves (though the potential necessity of that gambit in a world rigged against women is often under-considered). Distinguishing Michael Curtiz’s Mildred Pierce from many noirs, then, is its disarmingly and modernly casual sense of the reliable humiliation of lif"

Movies the giraffe watched in 2018: September (31 movies items)

"First viewing - Sept. 2nd Mildred Pierce is mostly worth seeing for Joan Crawford's performance, as she does a stellar job of bringing the titular character to life. There's enough going on to keep you invested in the story, and yet it runs a bit overlong. It also doesn't help that it uses the approach of starting with an important scene and then backtracking to give the full history that led to that moment, when a straight linear approach would've worked far better. Or maybe I'm just getting t"

Eventually, the more complex character turned out to be actually Veda Pierce thanks to a really stron” read more

100 Greatest Golden Age Hollywood Films (100 movies items)

"Based on the James M. Cain novel of the same name, Michael Curtiz's Noir Melodrama 'Mildred Pierce' simplified the psychologically-complex source material to create a striking, emotionally-engaging piece of cinema. Standing out as a Noir that focuses primarily on women, 'Mildred Pierce' benefits hugely from a glorious central performance by Joan Crawford whose hypnotic eyes and expressive face override any initial concerns about the film's potential for overwrought histrionics. Unusually, given "
