Now, Voyager

Really three films in one, Now, Voyager is an absolutely intoxicating experience. One part breathless romance, one part character transformation and one part kindred-spirit-soothes-all-wounds weepie, this is the Warner Brother’s melodrama to end them all. A towering acting achievement in Bette Davis’ illustrious crown in which she changes from dowdy and neurotic to glamorous and confident soci... read more

Because it’s hard to think what to say about ‘Now, Voyager’, I will say that while it’s hard it is still a good movie. It features a very good ensemble cast that includes Bette Davis, Claude Rains, Paul Henried and Gladys Cooper, and features an intelligent script about taking your own life back.

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since it seemed to have a decent reputation, I thought I might as well check it out. In fact, I just saw yesterday ‘Dark Victory’, another classic starring Bette Davis. Basically, back in those days, these movies were really tailor-made around her, and, to be honest, it takes a while to get used to the fact that these movies didn’t ha... read more

The love story of Charlotte Vale, a middle-aged spinster who suffers a nervous breakdown because of her domineering mother and is finally freed after a brief love affair with Jerry, a man she meets while on a cruise after spending time in a sanitarium. They never marry, but through a miracle of chance Vale ends up raising his daughter for some time.

1001 Movies Chosen By Johanlefourbe (1001 movies items)

" Notes: Basically, back in those days, these movies were really tailor-made around Bette Davis, and, to be honest, it takes a while to get used to the fact that these movies didn’t have much else to offer, at least, as far as I was concerned. Still, I was more able to enjoy this one though. Sure, the gimmick of the ugly duckling transforming into a gorgeous woman has never been really interesting but there is no doubt that Davis absolutely made the best of it. Indeed, she was so good when pla"

TCM's Essentials: 52 Must See Movies (52 movies items)

"“I think it’s such an essential Bette Davis because it shows all aspects of her – she can be the neurotic, overweight Aunt Charlotte, and then she’s the glamorous one, soft-spoken, tender. And she’s got these wonderful scenes with Gladys Cooper…were she’s very strong and forceful. You see all shades of her.” -Robert Osborne “It’s just one of the great romantic melodramas of all time…. What’s really fun about it on a girly level is one of the best makeovers in history. A"
