First watched a few years ago whilst taking my A level in German. It's quite simply one of the greatest war films ever made and possible one of the greatest films ever made. Stunning cinematography,brilliantly directed and a great performance by Jurgen Pronchnow. Also kick started the career of Petersen in Hollywood. Easily a 5 star masterpiece.

I already saw this movie but since it was a while back, I was quite eager to check it out again. The second time around, I watched the director's cut which last more than more than 3 hrs which was slightly disorienting as it gave me the feeling that I had forgotten most of the damned thing. It is 1942 and the German submarine fleet is heavily engaged in the so called "Battle of the Atlantic" to harass and destroy English shipping. With better escorts of the Destroyer Class, however, German U-Boats have begun to take heavy losses. "Das Boot" is the story of one such U-Boat crew, with the film examining how these submariners maintained their professionalism as soldiers, attempted to accomplish impossible missions, while all the time attempting to understand and obey the ideology of the government under which they served.
