Enthralling war movie!

"There are 80,000 Arabs in the Kasbah. Are they all against us? We know they're not. In reality, it's only a small minority that dominates with terror and violence. This minority is our adversary and we must isolate and destroy it."

The Battle of Algiers is a vigorously haunting, eye-opening cinematic recreation of Algeria's struggle for independence from France that unfolded merely... read more

Since I kept hearing some really great things about this flick, I was really eager to check it out and I had some rather high expectations. Eventually,  the whole thing turned out  be even better than I expected which is something that very rarely happens. Obviously, it was highly controversial in France where it was banned for many years which is not surprising since this movie was shot only 3 ... read more

A film commissioned by the Algerian government that shows the Algerian revolution from both sides. The French foreign legion has left Vietnam in defeat and has something to prove. The Algerians are seeking independence. The two clash. The torture used by the French is contrasted with the Algerian's use of bombs in soda shops. A look at war as a nasty thing that harms and sullies everyone who participates in it.

"February 23rd Directed by: Gillo Pontecorvo An extremely impressive and shocking film, it's really hard to know at times if what you're seeing is fabrication or not. You don't have to be ingrained in the politics of Algeria in the 1950s to get what's going on, it's really very simple, but I did feel like the focus was shaky after the first hour or so. I feel like there were too many scenes of French colonizers just talking, maybe I missed the point of those scenes. But overall this is a tremen"

"“I don’t have a conversation about the ten or fifteen best movies without The Battle of Algiers…. I know they didn’t use documentary or newsreel footage, and yet every time I see certain scenes, I think, ‘that’s obviously newsreel footage,’ and you cannot convince me otherwise – even though I know they’re not lying.” - Ben Mankiewicz “ is able to conjure a sense of time and place, but also energy, the revolutionary spirit. The filmmaking is so visceral…. Grand themes re"
