A good movie

I wasn't really sure what to expect from this movie but a year after Bowie's death, the BBC decided to broadcast this movie and since it had a decent reputation, I thought I might as well  check it out. Well, it must be by far one of the weirdest alien features I have ever seen. Basically, it was a little bit like 'E.T.', except that the alien character was not a puppet but was played by David Bo... read more

(MU) Bizarre, contradictory: in a way is interesting the normalization of the alien making a human life with a purpose of going back theme; but the style, and deviations with the support characters, is distracting

Thomas Jerome Newton is a humanoid alien who comes to Earth to get water for his dying planet. He starts a high technology company to get the billions of dollars he needs to build a return spacecraft, and meets Mary-Lou, a girl who falls in love with him. He does not count on the greed and ruthlessness of business here on Earth, however.

" Notes: Well, it must be by far one of the weirdest alien features I have ever seen. Basically, it was a little bit like 'E.T.', except that the alien character was not a puppet but was played by David Bowie and the makers were apparently running on acid. First of all, let's state the obvious, Bowie was basically born to play such a character. Back in those days, the rock star was actually a major drug addict but, even without the drugs, the way he looked and his attitude was just perfect to pl"

RS: 50 Best Sci-Fi Movies of the 1970s (50 movies items)

"Bearing no traces of the tropes that helped tame the genre throughout the decade, Nicolas Roeg’s adaptation of Walter Tevis’s novel remains a breathlessly in-the-moment, sui generis creation. David Bowie is Thomas Jerome Newton, a scarlet-haired alien sent to earth to secure water for his own dehydrated planet. After he hustles a multimillion-dollar fortune out of high-tech patents, the beanpole androgyne becomes waylaid from his mission, mesmerized by serial distractions such as a comely el"

Slant's 100 Best Sci-Fi Movies of All Time (100 movies items)

"Adapted from the novel by Walter Tevis, Nicolas Roeg’s The Man Who Fell to Earth finds the alien in alienation. The novel and film are melancholy studies in social estrangement and the depredations of alcoholism, loosely attired in the trappings of science fiction, that recount the disastrous attempts at earthly assimilation by an ambitious visitor from another planet. If anything, Roeg and screenwriter Paul Mayersberg enlarge upon the tragedy of ersatz human and eventual billionaire Thomas Je"

"Nicolas Roeg's sci-fi drama is a difficult watch, especially if you are not a fan of his particular style of filmmaking, yet if you can accept his approach, you will get a satisfying and intelligent tale of an alien who comes to earth in get water to save his planet only to be seduced by television, drink and greed. David Bowie is superbly perfect as the title character in a film that is challenging, interesting and a cult gem."

Concerning the movie itself, it was rather hit and miss, to be honest. I mean, it” read more
