Roobha
Powerful drama in which a young transgender dancer called Roobha has an affair with a much older, married man, offering him hope while destroying a marriage. This Canadian drama boasts impressive performances while dealing with a subject matter so relevant. Jesuthasan Antonythasan, who wrote the story, is impressive as the married man while Amrit Sandhu as Roobha is terrific. A moving tale of forbidden love.

Bernadett Tuza-Ritter's impressive first feature started out as a student film but grew when the story of a woman trapped as a slave became even more real when the woman called Marish, decides that after 10 years of being enslaved, she has the courage to escape. Incredibly powerful and heartbreaking, you really feel for this woman who has never found an opportunity to escape her captor. A tough film to watch yet Tuza-Ritter has a bright future as a filmmaker.

Paul Newman is on top form as a down-on-his-luck lawyer who is given the perfect case of a woman left in a coma after a hospital mistake. Written by David Mamet and directed by Sidney Lumet, this is a powerhouse of emotions as we see a man on the rise who can't help but make the right decisions. With a strong supporting cast, this is Newman's film and he has never been better.

I Love My Mum
Enjoyable comedy with Kierston Wareing and Tommy French as mother and son, who find themselves in Morocco with no money, no passport and in their pajamas, desperate to get home to London. Alberto Sciamma's film is very reminiscent to Planes, Trains and Automobiles as the pair find themselves crossing borders with everything going wrong for them. Loses its way near the end but on the whole, fun.

First Man (2018)
While this is the story of Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon, this is more about the journey to get there and a man coping with grief and loneliness. Ryan Gosling is Armstrong, giving a tremendous performance of a man desperate to get into space and yet dealing with his own personal demons, while Claire Foy is superb as his wife. Damien Chazelle's follow-up to La La Land is a very different creature and captures the details and human story brilliantly. Slightly too long, this still captures the heart.

Forty years after the release of the first and now classic John Carpenter horror and now we have a brand new film in which we have to forget all the other sequels and reboots. Michael Myers has escaped prison and is heading back to his home town where he continues his killing spree but waiting for him is Laurie Strode, hungry for revenge. While the gore factor has been raised, this has enough scares to keep horror fans happy and Jamie Lee Curtis is a towering force returning as Laurie.

Timothy Dalton's last outing as Bond is an underrated gem. As an old friend is left for dead by an evil drug baron, Bond is stripped of his licence to kill and goes it alone to seek revenge, finding himself needing help from unlikely sources. This a Bond beyond its time which is why they decided to move on from Dalton, although this would have been a perfect film in the Daniel Craig years. The set pieces and stuntwork is, as usual, top-notch and Gladys Knight's theme song is one of the best.

Terrific ensemble drama as a group of mismatched characters arrive at the El Royale, a hotel that straddles the borders of California and Nevada, yet the motley group all hold dark secrets, as does the hotel. Written and directed by Drew Goddard, this Tarantino-esque thriller has a cracking soundtrack and good performances all round. Slightly too long, it does manage to keep the interest, even if the film takes some unusual turns and twists.

A sequel no one asked for as Rowan Atkinson returns as the bumbling British spy, brought out of retirement to track down a computer hacker holding the British to ransom. While some of the set pieces are amusing as individual moments, as part of this they become a bore. Atkinson is a funny man but this material is pathetic and even Emma Thompson cannot save this mess. Time to put Johnny English to rest.

Hard to believe Bradley Cooper has never directed before as this is a superb revision of the classic tale of a singer on his way down, who discovers and falls for a torch singer who turns into a star. The performances from Cooper and Lady Gaga are magnificent, with a chemistry most romantic couple only would dream of. With a brilliant soundtrack this is near-perfect filmmaking with tremendous support from the underrated Sam Elliott. One of this year's best films.

Venom (2018)
Based on a Marvel character more related to Spider-Man and yet the web-slinger is nowhere to be seen, this stand-alone origins tale of the anti-hero is tonally a mess. Reporter Tom Hardy finds himself engulfed by an alien being who want to take on evil Riz Ahmed. The first half takes itself way too seriously and its only until Hardy gets to converse with the creature that some fun can be had. Michelle Williams is wasted as Hardy's girlfriend but Hardy lets rip with a pantomime performance.

Paul Feig's change of pace from broad comedy to thriller is a shambles, saved by the passion of the two leads. Anna Kendrick's single mother meets ballsy businesswoman Blake Lively and the two become unlikely friends. Until Lively disappears and Kendrick starts to investigate and discovers the truth about her friend. This is a film that doesn't know what it wants to be: a comedy, a thriller, a mystery and femme fatale. Sometimes it will change genre in the middle of a scene. Yet the whole thing is an enjoyable mess.

Night School (2018)
What a shame. This so-called comedy about a wise-cracking Kevin Hart having to attend night school in order to get his high school qualification and coming face-to-face with tough teacher Tiffany Haddish. This film's heart is in the right place, yet the humour is few and far between and even though the leads give it everything they have, it cannot save the limp and cliched script. However, it does treat learning difficulties with respect and it's gender politics are heading in the right direction.

One of those films that seemed so much better than you remember it. A small town is taken over by children with murderous intent as a young couple arrive and find themselves targets. Based on a short story by Stephen King, this has all the elements of a cracking horror. Yet it comes across as cheaply made with really over-the-top performances and the shocks are non-existent. It does have a young Linda Hamilton pre-Terminator but that is the only high point.

What starts out like a classic caper with a first rate cast soon turns very nasty halfway through. Michael Caine leads a team of thieves as they break into a jewellers in Hatton Garden. Once the crime is committed the thieves start to turn on each other. With a dream cast of Ray Winstone, Jim Broadbent and Tom Courtney you would expect an entertaining drama based on true events. Yet while it starts with good intentions, the turning of the characters leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

Eli Roth's first family film is a confused adventure about a young boy who goes to stay with his unusual uncle and his equally strange neighbour and the clock that is hidden in the walls of house. While its based on a book pre-Harry Potter, you can see that this is aiming at the Potter fans, although the story is messy and answers to questions are never clear. Jack Black and Cate Blanchett are fun together but they need a stronger script, while Roth does add some surprisingly nasty touches.

This should have been a full-throttle action thriller but instead it's a messy, incredibly inept and nasty film that is edited within an inch of its life. Mark Wahlberg stars as the leader of an elite CIA unit sent to escort a key witness to a plane 22 miles away. With its shaky camerawork and the editing all over the place, this Peter Berg directed thriller has the most unlikeable lead character and John Malkovich in an outrageous wig who has the look of a man waiting for the cheque.

Enjoyable romantic comedy about a New Yorker who is taken to Singapore by her ordinary boyfriend who just happens to be the son of one of the wealthiest people on the island. This shouldn't work and yet it does. There's a really sweet centre to this that is neither sickening or annoying. Michelle Yeoh as the strong-willed mother is superb being the only character playing the whole thing straight. It may be consumerism at its worse but it never feels that its being forced down your throat like Sex and the City 2.

A rom-com that didn't make me feel sick. Steve Carell is the widower with three daughters who spends a weekend with his extended family. When out, he meets Juliette Binoche and they hit it off. What he doesn't know is that she is dating his brother. A film full of awkward moments but you like spending time with the characters and so the romance, which isn't forced, works. The mix of the two leads helped as you couldn't hate them even if you tried.

John Landis does the impossible by mixing comedy with horror and making it stick. Two Americans on the Yorkshire Moors, are attacked, leaving one dead and the other badly injured. Hospitalised in London, he soon discovers that they were attacked by a werewolf and the line is still in him. The transformation sequence is still incredible considering it wasn't computer generated. One moment your laughing, the next screaming. A bona fide classic.

Slick, stylish and very cool, this all-star remake of the Brat Pack 60's classic has all the right moves as George Clooney and Brad Pitt pull a team together to rob three Vegas casinos. Director Steven Soderbergh brings together a mix of smart dialogue with a twisting heist movie that will have you scratching your head while loving every minute of it. The cast seems to be having a great time and so do you.

One of Norman Wisdom's later film starts to feel a little clunky as Norman plays an accident-prone man sent to a seaside town to work on a local newspaper, causing disaster everywhere he goes and upsetting the political community. A few of the set pieces work (a scene where Norman finds himself attached to a hanging lamp is amusing) but the pathos fails to work and it all comes across as laboured. A pity as Norman's previous films has charm. This doesn't

Repossessed (1990)
Terrible spoof comedy based around The Exorcist with Linda Blair as a woman who is repossessed by the devil and her exorcism will occur on TV. Leslie Nielsen plays the priest send to save her. You can see that some of the jokes could work if they weren't hammered home and delivered without a hint of good timing. It wants to be Airplane but it cannot even hold a candle to that classic. Uncomfortably embarrassing.

A dire sequel to the joyfully self-indulgent original has Burt Reynolds and the star cast going through the motions again, only with more slapstick Road Runner style comedy that often looks pathetic. Even the inclusion of Frank Sinatra cannot lift the film. It passes the time but if you are a fan of the 1981 film, then best to ignore this and move on. The outtakes at the end of the film manage to save this from being a complete disaster.

The Predator (2018)
If anyone could save this failing franchise, it's Shane Black. Sadly that's not the case, with an incoherent plot and characters you care little for, this violent yet drab sequel doesn't bring anything new to the table and Black's usual sharp dialogue is sadly lacking. A troubled post-production hasn't helped as it feels we are missing key scenes as it jumps from one dull action set piece to another. This year's biggest disappointment.

Low-key and very relevant tale of a girl (Chloe Grace Moretz) who is forced to go to a church camp after she is caught in the back of a car with another girl. his examination of gay conversion therapy is something that has come back in American politics, yet this tale, set in the 90's, like BlacKkKlansman, might as well be set now. Brilliantly understated performance from Moretz as well as the strong supporting cast makes this an enjoyable yet poignant tale.
