All That Jazz

Heavily indebted to Federico Fellini’s 8 ½ in its combination of reality and fantasy in exploring the artistic mind and temperament, All That Jazz is a reflective, energetic movie about a genius director/choreographer grappling with impending death. For such weighty material, All That Jazz feels incredibly alive, joyous even in its combination of self-examination and mordant humor.   Bob Fos... read more

A classic

Since this movie is a classic, I was really eager to check it out. To be honest, it took me a while to get into the damned thing. It probably had to do with the fact that I’m not a huge fan of musicals in general but Bob Fosse is one director who was really able to flawlessly combine musical numbers within a straightforward story. On top of that, his musicals were quite dark, at least, the ones ... read more

Description: Choreographer-turned-director Bob Fosse (Cabaret, Lenny) turns the camera on himself in this nervy, sometimes unnerving 1979 feature, a nakedly autobiographical piece that veers from gritty drama to razzle-dazzle musical, allegory to satire. It's an indication of his bravura, and possibly his self-absorption, that Fosse (who also cowrote the script) literally opens alter ego Joe Gideon's heart in a key scene--an unflinching glimpse of cardiac surgery, shot during an actual open-heart procedure. Roy Scheider makes a brave and largely successful leap out of his usual romantic lead roles to step into Gideon's dancing pumps, and su ... (more)

" Director: Bob Fosse Starring: Roy Scheider, Jessica Lange, Leland Palmer, Ann Reinking, Cliff Gorman, Ben Vereen, John Lithgow, Ben Masters, C. C. H. Pounder and Wallace Shawn When he is not planning for his upcoming stage musical or working on his Hollywood film, choreographer/director Joe Gideon is popping pills and sleeping with a seemingly endless line of women. "As a man who can't walk a step without confronting my fear of my own mortality with categorically extreme anxiety, there is no greater comfort than seeing this displayed as they are and finding some semblance of meaning from it. All That Jazz, underneath the glamor and fantasy it cakes itself with, is through and through a film of accepting the inevitability of dying and therefore accepting the joys of living. Reaching a mental state of that sort continues to be my own personal, unreachable fant"

“Since this movie is a classic, I was really eager to check it out. To be honest, it took me a while to get into the damned thing. It probably had to do with the fact that I’m not a huge fan of musicals in general but Bob Fosse is one director who was really able to flawlessly combine musical numbers within a straightforward story. On top of that, his musicals were quite dark, at least, the ones he filmed, much darker than your average musical and it made them much more interesting to behold. Finally, I was quite impressed by Roy Scheider who played something completely different than his usual characters and he gave here probably his best performance. To be honest, the whole thing still felt like a huge egotrip obviously inspired by ‘8 1/2’ from Federico Fellini but, eventually, what” read more
