Parasite (2019)
2.6. 2021

A young poor guy is hired by a rich family and the future is suddenly looking bright for the young man and his family, but slowly everything starts to change and some secrets are revealed. "Parasite" is slighty more exciting than an average thriller but it is still not quite memorable enough. The film also tries to say something about social issues but only manages to scratch the surface.

This plot in this film is so generic and mindless that I've no idea what was going on most of the time. I just wanted it to end and forget it. I hope that the company that produced these new awful Star Wars films would learn from its mistakes but I wouldn't get my hopes up.

Sarah Connor is once again fighting against a killer cyborg. Everything about the film is extremely forgettable, especially action scenes which is obviously a problem since this is supposed to be an action film after all. The plot is one of the dumbest I've ever seen. It includes the Terminator that is seriously trying to live a normal family life. This is mind-boggling because you would expect seeing something like this in some shitty parody film but not in an actual Terminator film.

A Kazakh war hero proves his courage by fighting against the gigantic Mongol army. The main subject of the film is quite unique but you can't say the same about the direction that very standard and cliched.

Your Name (2016)
21.3. 2021

A boy and a girl who have never met each other switch bodies. Both of them are obviously confused by this strange phenomenon and try to figure out what really is happening to them, but there aren't many clear answers. "Your Name" seems quite disjointed at times but the mysterious atmosphere easily captivates viewers. Unique love story is also very engaging despite its flaws.

Nagisa Oshima is known for his controversial and intriguing films. "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence" is one of his more boring efforts. David Bowie plays a British soldier who is stuck in a Japanese POW camp. Culture clash is the main topic in the film but the director doesn't say anything especially interesting about it. The film drags a lot and it also has some scenes that feel just too strange and confusing.

Harakiri (1962)
19.3. 2021

A man wants to commit suicide (harakiri) which is traditionally considered to be a honorable way for a samurai to end his life. However, he also has an interesting and thought-provoking story to tell. The director Kobayashi manages to accurately explaining the absurdity of the old Japanese culture. He made a powerful film about society where honour is considered to be more important than reason.

The mother of a feudal lord's heir is kidnapped by the lord which pressures her husband and his samurai father to make a difficult decision. Kobayashi was a master at explaining the complexicities and irrationality of the old Japanese culture and he succeeded this time as well even though the film feels a bit heavy-handed at times.

An influential yakuza boss happens to be a vampire and the whole world starts crumbling when he starts killing people. It is difficult to describe this film in any way because absolutely nothing that happens in it makes any sense whatsoever. There's also a martial art master in a frog suit who just beats and kills everyone he sees, and I'm not surprised that it is never clearly explained who he is, why is he doing whatever he is doing, and why he is wearing the frog suit. It's hard to make worse and more contrived film than this.

Onibaba (1964)
14.3. 2021

Two Japanese women make their living in times of war by stalking and killing soldiers. The younger woman starts a passionate sex relationship with a man but the older woman despises the man in spite of the fact the she is sexually frustrated as well. During the hard times people tend to rely on their natural instincts and focus on pretty much anything that would take their attention away from all the misery around them. "Onibaba" is a steamy melodrama inspired by Japanese folklore. The metaphors in the film might not be too subtle but the film is still very intense nonetheless.

A filmmaker meets an old man who takes his role as Don Quixote way too seriously. Together they engage in all kinds of surrealistc adventures. Terry Gilliam finally finished his problematic project and the end result is mostly just tedious. It's not a traditional film adaptation but the slightly unique main idea isn't enough to keep viewers interested.

Dante's Peak (1997)
14.2. 2021

A vulcanologist believes that a volcano may erupt at any moment but his stubborn boss isn't easily convinced. Can innocent people be rescued before it's too late? "Dante's Peak" is almost exactly like Spielberg's "Jaws" but instead of a shark there is a volcano. While "Dante's Peak" can be moderately entertaining at times, it still is annoyingly generic and predictable in every way possible. It's a typically absurd Hollywood film with a typical immortal dog. The dog in "Jaws" wasn't as lucky.

An officious motorbike cop meets all kinds of people in his job and often ends up searching for troubles from wrong places. "Electra Glide in Blue" is a cult film from the very productive and creative era of American film industry. It's a little bit like "Taxi Driver" with a motorbike cop. The film depicts many different levels of American society but the most fascinating thing about the film is how it exposes the connection between police corruption and cycle of violence.

Gremlins (1984)
8.2. 2021

Small but creepy creatures cause havoc in a small American town where people are preparing for Christmas. The first "Gremlins" film works better than the second one because it has a good balance between horror and comedy. The plot is really linear and unpredictable but the tense atmosphere and fascinatingly dark humour save the film.

First Blood (1982)
7.2. 2021

A mentally disturbed but skilled war veteran gets harrassed by corrupted cops but he manages to escape to the forest where he continues his desperate one-man war against his chasers. The first film in the famous series is the only one that actually makes some sense. Politicians always send young men to fight useless wars but they aren't interested in taking care of them when they return home, and "First Blood" reminds us of consequences of these kind of morally questionable political decisions.

10.1. 2021

A terminally ill author meets his family after avoiding them for several years but the meeting doesn't go so well when all the characters start revealing their true feelings. This potentially interesting family drama film promises more than it can deliver. It tries to explore some potentially engaging issues but it lacks truly insightful viewpoints.

The Babadook (2014)
9.1. 2021

A single mother living with her problematic son has to deal with her psychological traumas after her husband died. "The Babadook" isn't an especially unique psychological horror film but it deals with serious issues like a loss of loved one in a mature and admirably straight-forward way. The film also keeps viewers on their toes all the time.

2.1. 2021

A teenage girl gets sexually harrassed at house parties and bullies at school keep humiliating her and pushing her over the edge. "Hip hip hora" isn't as profound as it could've been and it also feels too short. It still tells about serious problems in a convincing manner and the main message is even more relevant nowadays because social media has made harassment even bigger problem.
