A very good movie

To be honest, it has been years since I have seen this movie and I should definitely re-watch it at some point. Anyway, I always thought it was just a fascinating picture. I mean, first of all, the people involved were just really interesting. Indeed, even though it was directed by Nagisa Ôshima, it wasn’t really a Japanese production, more an international project. Same for the lead characters... read more

Description: In this captivating, skewed World War II drama from Nagisa Oshima, David Bowie regally embodies Celliers, a British officer interned by the Japanese as a POW. Rock star Ryuichi Sakamoto (who also composed this film’s hypnotic score) plays the camp commander, obsessed with the mysterious blond major, while Tom Conti is the British lieutenant colonel Lawrence, who tries to bridge the emotional and language divides between captor and prisoner. Also featuring actor-director Takeshi Kitano in his first dramatic role, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence is a multilayered, brutal, at times erotic tale of culture clash, and one of Oshima’s ... (more)

" Date: 1/21/2022 Viewed: Criterion Channel First Viewing Note: Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence is one of those classic films that I'd heard about growing up but never had the opportunity to see it. I intended to watch it in December, around the Christmas season, but it slipped my mind. Thanks to someone recommending it for Film Club's Secret Cinema, I'm now watching it in January. I really liked it after seeing it for the first time on the Criterion Channel. Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence is a s"

"  In 1940's Japan, cultures are clashing at the same time that two kindred spirits are connecting when a young rebellious American soldier is admitted to a prison camp. The Japanese prison commanders believe in the way of the samurai, death before dishonor, while the Americans believe in that there is no shame in surviving in order to stand up for one's ideals.  Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence is a war drama that stars music icon David Bowie, who, after a few awkward starts in cinema, is now beg"

Mustanaamio7's Movie Diary 2021 (24 movies items)

"20.3. 2021 Nagisa Oshima is known for his controversial and intriguing films. "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence" is one of his more boring efforts. David Bowie plays a British soldier who is stuck in a Japanese POW camp. Culture clash is the main topic in the film but the director doesn't say anything especially interesting about it. The film drags a lot and it also has some scenes that feel just too strange and confusing."
