The list title is taken from Peter Biskind's excellent book on the rise and fall in the USA of director-led cinema mainly for grown-ups: something of a golden age that is seen as ending with the box office disaster of Heaven's Gate, compared to the success of Star Wars. In the 80s, reactionary politics and the power of the studios and big business were reasserted, with films aimed more at the teen market.
