For anyone thinking this is yet another WWII-era movie full of hardened dough-boys bravely fighting the Nazis or Japs, you're about to be surprised or disappointed, depending on your preconceived notions. It's not too difficult to view this movie in the present day, and realize how forward-thinking the screenplay was. While the movie was played out in 1946 post-war America and subject to the same... read more

"You know, I had a dream. I dreamt I was home. I've had that same dream hundreds of times before. This time, I wanted to find out if it's really true. Am I really home?"

William Wyler's The Best Years of Our Lives is a landmark post-WWII production. The collective Hollywood wisdom in 1945 was to halt the creation of movies with wartime themes. The movie-going public had just endured... read more

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this movie but since it had a really solid reputation, I thought I might as well check it out. To be honest, with such a title, I was actually expecting something rather cheesy. Well, I have to admit that the end-result turned to be not so corny after all and, eventually, I wonder what they actually meant with this title. Still, even though they did give ... read more

Description: The story concentrates on the social re-adjustment of three World War II servicemen, each from a different station of society. Al Stephenson (Fredric March) returns to an influential banking position, but finds it hard to reconcile his loyalties to ex-servicemen with new commercial realities. Fred Derry (Dana Andrews) is an ordinary working man who finds it difficult to hold down a job or pick up the threads of his marriage. Having had both hands burnt off during the war, Homer Parrish (Harold Russell) is unsure that his fiancée's feelings are still those of love and not those of pity. Each of the veterans faces a crisis upon h ... (more)

TCM's Essentials: 52 Must See Movies (52 movies items)

"“This is a real Hollywood drama…. There are no effects, no action scenes, it’s a pure spoken-word drama. It’s set in a postwar period but I think speaks to a lot of issues beyond World War II, issues about human relationships.” -Alec Baldwin “It’s still very relevant today, people coming back damaged from terrible fighting they’ve had to do somewhere…. This movie really does have a message, but it’s always entertaining…. One of the great, great films of all time, I think."
