Robert E. Sherwood was an American playwright and screenwriter. Sherwood was known for his Pulitzer Prize-winning plays "Abe Lincoln in Illinois" (1938) and "There Shall Be No Night" (1940), and for his screenplays for Alfred Hitchcock's "Rebecca" (1940), William Wyler's "The Best Years of Our Lives" (1946) and "The Bishop's Wife" (1947). He won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for "The Best Years of Our Lives" and was nominated in the same category for "Rebecca". He also served in the Canadian Army during World War I and was wounded in combat.
