Ex... read more

A good movie

Honestly, I find it rather difficult to judge this movie. Indeed, I have always had a weak spot for John Boorman's work and I wanted to watch this flick for many years. Furthermore, it had built up a decent cult following since its release so my expectations were pretty high up. However, I can't say that the whole thing was mind-blowing though. I mean, I did like this movie but there were many thi... read more

Description: The greatest Arthurian movie ever made. This lush retelling of the legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table is a dark and engrossing tale. Director John Boorman (Deliverance) masterfully handles the tale of the mythical sword Excalibur, and its passing from the wizard Merlin to the future king of England. Arthur pulls the famed sword from a stone and is destined to be crowned king. As the king embarks on a passionate love affair with Guenevere, an illegitimate son, and Merlin's designs on power, threaten Arthur's reign. The film is visually stunning and unflinching in its scenes of combat and black magic. Feat ... (more)

Pop Culture Phenomenon Films: 80’s (1473 movies items)

" A surreal adaptation of Sir Thomas Malory’s “Le Morte d’Arthur”, chronicling Arthur Pendragon’s conception, his rise to the throne, the search by his Knights of the Round Table for the Holy Grail, and ultimately his death. Excalibur is a 1981 epic medieval fantasy film directed, co-written and produced by John Boorman, that retells the legend of King Arthur and the knights of the Round Table, based loosely on the 15th-century Arthurian romance Le Morte d'Arthur by Thomas Malory. "21.1. This film reminded me what I love about John Boorman: it doesn't matter how silly of campy his subject matters are, they always feel larger than life and downright awe-inspiring."

Pros and Cons of Films: Vol. 1 (121 movies items)

"Pros: A dark, gritty, medieval movie. Great performances by Nigel Terry, Nicol Williamson, Helen Mirren, and Patrick Stewart. Earlier performances by Gabriel Byrne, Patrick Stewart, Helen Mirren, and Ciarán Hinds. The cinematography. Epic classic music, and Trevor Jones. The gritty, violent battle scenes. It effectively use the King Arthur Legend. The attention, to detail. Cons: It’s epically lengthy, and at times pretentious. Some of the actions in the film, can describe as questi"

Watched films in 2022 (175 movies items)

"25.1. Blu-ray Mulla oli pikkupoikana sen verran suuri innostus Arthurin legendaa kohtaan, että sillä on varmasti vaikutuksensa sille, ettei noin kymmenvuotiaasta asti juuri mikään keskiaikafiktio ole kummemmin jaksanut kiinnostaa. Siksi olikin suuri ilo huomata, kuinka kiehtovan elokuvan John Boorman on aiheesta loihtinut. Jos tämä olisi ollut osana lapsuutta, olisi varmaan innostus pysynyt. Veri ja tissit olisi silti varmaan pelottaneet. Unelias visuaalinen ilme tukee fantasiaa ja imee m"

Movies That I Changed My Mind About (51 movies items)

"Maybe it was because I found Excalibur at first to be way too overdone, and pretentious (it didn’t help that it was an extremely long movie), but at the time I didn’t like Excalibur. But now, it’s one of my favourite films about King Arthur and the Round Table."

250 Of My Favorite Films From The 80's, y'all (250 movies items)

" In an age where we now have film series like Lord Of The Rings and Harry Potter, Excalibur may seem, by today's cinema standards, as incredibly small (not to mention, kinda mashed) potatoes. But still, for a kid like me, who was craving for any film with a fantasy flare, despite the time-period's lack of CGI technology, Excalibur tried it's best to approach the belief-suspending subject matter with an epic sense of integrity. I'm not sure it holds as well as other works of the early to mid 80'"

"10.4 Iso-Britannia/Boorman John Boorman on kyllä outo jätkä. Kuningas Artturin kalistelut ja rypemiset mudassa käydään läpi alkuperäismytologialle (käsittääkseni) hämmentävän uskollisesti sekä Boormanille ominaisten camp-ornamenttien koristamana."
