They Live (1988)
23.11.
This film feels like it could've been made yesterday. Bunch of degenerated alien freaks live hiding within us, leeching off our resources and manipulating us via mass media. John Carpenter was pointing at yuppies and libertarian politics of his own time, but this phenomenon is still as real as ever.

Strangely enough, I didn't actually watch this movie. I had a dream where I watched it. It was so accurate and vivid that I think it counts.

Hitler: The Rise of Evil (2003)
30.10.
This film is utter shitshow and it makes me laugh out loud every time I see it. They tried to make these historical figures look and sound as over the top and insane as possible. Hitler barely has any other emotion than just hate, and he's just crazy. Everything here feels so oversimplified, like there's no story or history behind anything that happens, things just happen because Hitler is evil and he's rising and he's very angry and he hates everything and everyone.
In reality there's a huge and complicated history behind this thing that is still widely discussed among historians. The things that happened during the era and the way people thought had at least decades of complicated history behind them, not just political but also esoteric, neo-paganic and spiritual thinking. That's why they used swastika as their symbol.

After watching some other Daily Wire stuff, I decided to re-watch this early "classic" of theirs with more open mindset. I think Matt Walsh is a kind of Borat who goes around annoying people asking with this one impossible question. The problem is that the question of gender and sex are treated so superficially here, like sure, it makes good entertainment, but what's the point really? The only valid message here is that many people who make noise about women's rights seem to be just grifters, but then what?
That's just my point: Daily Wire or Walsh don't really have anything to offer other than the question. Too many people watch this stuff just because they think it's all black and white and this makes "the enemy" look really bad. This attitude in itself is the problem, the fact that opposites don't want to talk or understand each other and just try and push more conflict to hurt each other. That's just bullshit.

I case you really love The Who and Tommy, then this film is just what you need. I don't think it's that great, but as an ambitious spectacle for the fans it does the trick. Tommy even stars Elton John, Jack Nicholson, Tina Turner...

If Talking Heads is your cup of tea, then this concert film is mandatory. The way the whole thing is build goes from an empty stage to David Byrne playing solo while the scenery is built and the rest of the band join in. The longer it goes, the better it gets.

As far as I know, this prototype short was created mainly for experimenting then brand new coloring techniques and not for distribution. Sadly, only the black and white version exists today.

Around this time the series started getting really bad. All the good actors were gone, and so was the budget.

I miss the time when films could still be simple and smart. The Fly was so revered, even I knew it before I could read, and I didn't watch the film until I was 18.

What seems like a traditional crime-thriller turned out to be a man lost in a soulless corporate world ridden with greed and paranoia. John Boorman directed the hell out of this film.

The original ending you have to see. Without it the film is great, but the original restored version is the only true way to experience this.

Well, this was pretty tough film to sit through, honestly. There are no central characters or a story. Instead it's a one huge compilation of every revolution and revolt in Hungarian history and probably beyond. The characters are more like archetypes and symbols, and the way they use music reminded me of using art as a tool for justice and virtue in the world. In other words: hippy stuff.

This film reminded me what I love about John Boorman: it doesn't matter how silly of campy his subject matters are, they always feel larger than life and downright awe-inspiring.

Believe it or not, this film is not about a boy and a kestler. It's more about the bleak and hopeless life of a working class lad, his troubled family and the whole education system. The director is a devout socialist, so no wonder.
As usual, I don't like the pessimism. I can see what the director is trying to say, but the pessimism is what bites me.

There's not that much plot in this film: it's just the brutality of war. It's namely Russian Civil war, but the way they frame it, this could be anywhere and any time. That is, inhumane violence and suffering, are universal.

A historically significant documentary, even groundbreaking at the time it was filmed. This doc was supposed to be about the British conquest of the South Pole, but ended up showing a tragedy of the men sacrificing their lives for their expedition. The historical value of this document wasn't fully understood until recently, maybe because history hates failures.
