Rather disappointing effort from Tim Burton...
“I know that the 1971 musical was unfaithful to the book, but I did much prefer that version to this well-intentioned but somewhat disappointing effort from Tim Burton, the director of Batman and Edward Scissorhands, and this adaptation was in some way more unfaithful in spirit than the 1971 film. The film does have some lovely sets and inventive visuals, the boat scene is fun if not as much as in the Wilder version, a great job is done with the Veruca Salt/squirrel scene and I liked the performances of Helena Bonham Carter, David Kelly and Freddie Highmore. But I was disappointed with Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka. He just lacked the charm and grace Gene Wilder brought to the character, and I don't think Roald Dahl intended a characterisation that was more Michael Jackson than Willy Wonka. So” read more
“For the longest time I have wanted to talk about this I am going to have to say I really have wanted to give my own thoughts on it, I genuinely like this one and didn't look too hard into what it was about or why each of the kids met their ends since we know what they're like (Violet's competitive, Augustus is greedy, Mike's obsessed with the screen) and you really don't need to look too hard to find answers I know a lot of people pretty much prefer the Gene Wilder one but that one didn't seem all that memorable to me outside of the songs and that tunnel scene, but I prefer this one. Mainly because i'm a Burton fan, it's closer to the novel, and also I like Depp as Wonka. I know I know, all the comparisons to Michael Jackson which don't really make sense when you consider book Wonka hates ” read more
