Irreversible (2002)
Disturbingly beautiful and cruel with some absolutely fantastic camera work. Backwards storytelling really messes up your emotions.
upidipi's rating:

Lost in Translation (2003)
Peaceful but still full of suppressed tension. Depicts really wonderfully life's crossroads.
upidipi's rating:

Another gem from Kaufman's endlessly deep and meaningful stories. Really broke the romantic genre's mould.
upidipi's rating:

There Will Be Blood (2007)
Without a doubt the best epic big budget Hollywood film of the noughties. A real tour de force performance by Paul Thomas Anderson and Daniel Day-Lewis.
upidipi's rating:

Before Sunset (2004)
This and the predecessor are one of those films that possess so many outer movie elements to me personally that they are really hard to evaluate on an objective manner. That is why I won't even bother. But despite those elements this is still a wonderfully simple and intensive film with some really convincing acting by Delpy and Hawke.
upidipi's rating:

Sin City (2005)
Beautiful, tight and generally great movie version of the graphic novels. After seeing The Spirit I am really frightened what will happen to the sequel.
upidipi's rating:

Another great one from Tarr. Has of course some really great and beautiful long shots. Never thought that a crime movie could be done in this way.
upidipi's rating:

Dolls (2002)
The only thing I really remember about this film was the visual greatness of it. Suppose it was beautiful on the inside too. Yeap, it must've been.
upidipi's rating:

Spirited Away (2001)
Miyazaki has created such an unbelievably mysterious and lovable story and environment for this movie that I just can't understand people who don't praise this.
upidipi's rating:

Dogville (2003)
Stripping the set to a floor with some paint on it brought this movie to a whole new level where you only really focus on the actors and their relations.
upidipi's rating:

Another Kaufman, yes indeed. This movie-within-a-movie-within-a-play-within-a-life? (or something like that) is so utterly meaningful and beautiful that it breaks me even to think about it. In a good way.
upidipi's rating:

Dancer in the Dark (2000)
Harsh, cruel and sometimes (oddly) just so wonderful. Especially the ending is a straight kick to the stomach and the movie is built up to it fantastically.
upidipi's rating:

A great black comedy with some totally hilarious scenes. Great music and some neat sea creatures.
upidipi's rating:

Talk to Her (2002)
Wonderfully created story about two relationships that aren't what they seem to be.
upidipi's rating:

The Wrestler (2009)
Great movie in which director Aronofsky quite cunningly connects the real life battles of actor Mickey Rourke and that of his character Randy.
upidipi's rating:

Downfall (2004)
Extremely realistic (I would suppose) view of the final days of Hitler in his bunker. Great performance by Bruno Ganz.
upidipi's rating:

Watchmen (2009)
Never was a fan of the superhero genre but this blew me away. Brutal fight scenes and the depth of the story are only one of the few aspects that make this a great movie.
upidipi's rating:

The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)
Another quirky yet tragic and deep black comedy from Anderson. Great characters and story.
upidipi's rating:

Tragicomedy at its best - and this is a documentary. This is Spinal Tap! coming alive!
upidipi's rating:

The Station Agent (2003)
One of my early 'movieholic' favorites that I have seen so many times. Great story with some really beautiful moments and characters.
upidipi's rating:

City of God (2002)
Beautifully and vibrantly directed movie about the rising of drug centered lives in Rio de Janeiros' favelas in the 70s.
upidipi's rating:

Ping-Pong (2004)
Funny with some really wonderful music and some very, very beautiful scenes. And all this in a ping pong movie, bizarre.
upidipi's rating:

LOTR did something that Harry Potters and other fantasy films based on books don't usually accomplish: it brought the books to life on the screen. I guess this installment represents the whole series.
upidipi's rating:

Requiem for a Dream (2000)
In desperate need of rewatch but from what I remember, this was inventively shot and depicted drug abuse from various angles in a most interesting way.
upidipi's rating:

Wonderfully original romantic movie that has some really brilliant and beautiful scenes.
upidipi's rating:

Waking Life (2001)
A continuous flow of interesting thoughts about life and death.
upidipi's rating:

The Man Without a Past (2002)
An interesting story that is directed in an even more interesting way. Shows the underside of our so called "welfare state".
upidipi's rating:

Grizzly Man (2005)
An honest documentary with some really fascinating thoughts provided by Herzog and the protagonist Timothy Treadwell.
upidipi's rating:

Mulholland Drive (2001)
Who did what and when and huh? The structure of the movie messed up my whole attitude about movies for awhile. Again in a good way. Badly in need of a rewatch.
upidipi's rating:

Still camera works favorable in this documentary which tries to shine a light on the thoughts and lives of a few finnish people. Meaningful and beautiful.
upidipi's rating:

High Fidelity (2000)
Small and easy romantic film that brings up some new aspects to the whole genre. Great music.
upidipi's rating:

The Lives of Others (2006)
Masterfully built story about the surveillance done in East Berlin during the Cold War.
upidipi's rating:

My top 50 of the noughties. I acknowledge that I have kind of a deficiency on some of the (probably) great movies - especially from outside of the U.S. - but haven't had that much time or energy or interest to sink into the films of the noughties. Some brief comments of those movies that I still can remember something insightful (hah).
