Great visual beauty with an epic duration and an interesting story. Brilliant.
upidipi's rating:
A fantastic piece of storytelling with a nihilistic undertone. And again I think this couldn't have been done without Dogme -style.
upidipi's rating:
Well, I guess I'm a hopeless romantic because this and the sequel affected me very deeply. Still when I have doubts about my own love life, it's really easy to come back to this and have a reassuring feeling that everything will be okay. Great dialogue and lots of it and still so much is said non-verbally.
upidipi's rating:
Great acting, character development, settings, cinematography and music combined in a mystical mix.
upidipi's rating:
Funny Games (1997)
A truly shocking film in the best way possible - which means that it makes you think.
upidipi's rating:
Peaceful camera movements, philosophical monologues and the general mood left me with a "wow" -feeling that lasted for days.
upidipi's rating:
Chungking Express (1994)
Unconventional camera angles, great story and music (California Dreaming!) make this a very unusual romantic flick.
upidipi's rating:
Never was a big fan of Dogme -films, but this one changed that perception. Even that it sometimes feels over the top, the camera captures everything so tightly to it's grasp that it's hard to imagine how this movie could've been done without Dogme rules. Entertaining and tragic at the same time.
upidipi's rating:
Brilliantly crafted story with really beautiful cinematography. This movie has a feel of its own.
upidipi's rating:
The Black Panther Warriors (1993)
I'm not usually one of those that rate awful films as five star movies, but this one's an exception. One of the funniest movies I've ever seen. Contains a lot of totally out of place scenes with some hilariously cut action sequences. Great stuff.
upidipi's rating:
Princess Mononoke (1997)
Great piece of art by Miyazaki. Wonderfully delightful story and animation.
upidipi's rating:
Portrays in a very stunning way the links between self meditation, Yankee outbacks and brutal, almost blunt violence. Great black and white cinematography with Neil Young's guitaring create a very mystical atmosphere.
upidipi's rating:
Great action scene choreographies that won't propably be ever topped by anything. Just compare those with for example Bad Boys II.
upidipi's rating:
American Beauty (1999)
Haven't seen this for awhile but this may be THE film that started this whole hobby with movies. That's why it's near the top. I mainly remember the absurd feelings that Lester (Spacey) has and how it all starts to make sense as the film progresses - even in my head.
upidipi's rating:
Fargo (1996)
Great cinematography, story and acting. Coen brothers' black comicality gets me every time.
upidipi's rating:
Reservoir Dogs (1992)
Who did, what happened and huh? Nowadays I really can't seem to get over the fact that even those prepubescent teens that don't understand anything about movies think Tarantino is great. And Tarantino's face has been bugging me ever since that thought occured to me (some kind of notion towards elitism?). Still, this one's great.
upidipi's rating:
Haven't seen this for years. Sentimental in a good way and I remember that acting, settings and cinematography were great. May be that after a rewatch points would go down because at the moment my appreciation towards Spielberg is at an all time low.
upidipi's rating:
Great adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson's book. Psychedelic flow of moments that will stick in your mind.
upidipi's rating:
Sling Blade (1997)
Contains a lot of scenes in which the camera isn't moving and where all the pictures are integrated together harmonically. Doesn't take advantage of the main character's mental disability in creating a touching movie which is something to applaud to. Great music (southern soft rock and other mystical sounds).
upidipi's rating:
Fight Club (1999)
The summer I turned fifteen-sixteen and was introduced to alcohol we used to watch this almost every night. I still can hear those birds chirping outside early in the morning and the sun blazing through the windows at the same time the buildings were collapsing in the movie. Still beautiful.
upidipi's rating:
Dances with Wolves (1990)
Great adaptation of Michael Blake's novel and a really solid effort from Costner in every aspect.
upidipi's rating:
Delicatessen (1991)
Innovative, visually stunning and the sounds are exceptionally good. Really fascinating piece of film.
upidipi's rating:
Boogie Nights (1997)
Great script and acting. The general mood of the film is something quite magical.
upidipi's rating:
Great 90's depression era movie from Finland. Mildly tragic and funny at the same time. Makes you feel good at the end though.
upidipi's rating:
Microcosmos (1996)
Shows how magical and interesting life can be, even near the grass roots. Can't imagine how many man-hours the completing of this film has taken.
upidipi's rating:
La vie de bohème (1992)
Contains a lot of easygoing dialog with a twist of philosophical pondering and small but very funny comedical moments. The overall mood in this film is great.
upidipi's rating:
Captures the mood of the 70's so stunningly that even McConaughey's acting doesn't bother me!
upidipi's rating:
Zombie and the Ghost Train (1991)
Great depiction of alcoholism. The ending is one of the greatest I've ever seen.
upidipi's rating:
Can anybody name someone who didn't want to listen to CCR and drink White Russians after this? Great comedy.
upidipi's rating:
Cube (1998)
A truly fantastic setting for a movie and contains lots of small - but great - pieces of moviemaking that I adore.
upidipi's rating:
The concept of equality is shown from an unusual angle, which gets its force from music, great acting and effective cinematography.
upidipi's rating:
La Haine (1995)
Lively depiction of hatred building up in a Paris ghetto with some really powerful scenes.
upidipi's rating:
Great black and white cinematography with edgy contrasts. Has an interesting plot and a really unique general mood.
upidipi's rating:
Great animation that is suitable for adults also. In fact I've enjoyed this more and more as I've grown up.
upidipi's rating:
The "in your face" mentality of violence shown and the overall mood of the movie make this a very stunning flick.
upidipi's rating:
Rushmore (1998)
I've always adored Wes Anderson's comedies and this one isn't an exception. Some really, really great comedical moments with a heart warming effect.
upidipi's rating:
Great piece of art by Kar Wai Wong. Beautiful cinematography (as usual when talking about him), wonderful music and sounds and an unusual love story combined in something magical.
upidipi's rating:
What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993)
Depp wonderfully acts out the struggle of a young adult in the crossroads of a basic question: what is the right thing to do? Di Caprio's best performance as a mentally handicapped person, which isn't done in an obvious underlining way.
upidipi's rating:
Great satire and an examination of the American family idyl. Mmm, black comedies, mmm.
upidipi's rating:
Comments on those movies that I still have some kind of grasp of. Many of these I haven't seen in ages. A whole lot of Hollywood flicks but hey, what can you do? Still trying to dig my head deeper into the films of the 90's.
