I followed them since 2002, and they still are my favorite band, even if there are better bands than them. Excellent musicians, but also with a great level of songwriting. Most of their long themes are among my favorite themes of all time.
This band opened my eyes to appreciate the good things about Death Metal. Their music is brutal and sentimental music at the same time. Mikael Akerfeldt, the mastermind behind Opeth, is one of the biggest geniuses in music today.
Melancholic prog metal at its finest, to me they do it better than the also great Porcupine Tree. I adore Mariusz' voice and Michal' keyboarding style
Very similar to Dream Theater, in style and quality of its members. They did my favorite album of all time (V: The New Mythology Suite) and the singer, Russell Allen, is my favorite singer in Metal today.
The best neo-prog band IMO. Their music is one of the most beautiful I've listened. Their mastermind, Nick Barrett, is an underrated genius.
Another similar band to Dream Theater, but with less virtuosism and more sentimental songs. I'm not a big fan of their post-2007 works, but their previous albums are overall recommended to listen.
Emotional music at its finest. Their earlier works are boring, but since Alternative 4 they have reached levels of excellence.
Brutal, technical, nihilist and radical music. Excellent musicians, especially the guitarist, Jeff Loomis and the singer, Warrel Dane
Being objective, this is IMO the best metal band in the world today. Brutal and complex with thought-provoking songs, and innovators in every album they do.
Probably my current favorite band, very innovative in my opinion, and have the potential to be the best prog metal band of all time. His 3 albums are all excellent and everyone different of each other.
My favorite band from my country, Chile. Deep, melancholic and powerful music that they did. Unfortunately, they splitted, but they reached levels of excellence that few Chilean music artists did.
Their first two albums were good but I felt that looked too similar to Dream Theater. However with "The Mountain" they did a more original album, with a really unique sound. In my opinion, the natural successors of Dream Theater.
My favorite Power Metal band, and also creators of my favorite song of all time: "And Then There Was Silence".
This band is the perfect example on how to do "sexually explicit" songs in a good way. Their defunct songwriter, Peter Steele, is in the same level as Mikael Akerfeldt or Steven Wilson.
Great Gothic Metal, very deep songs. Not the best musicians, but they work so perfectly in the band's style.
I have a kind of love-hate relationship with this band. Their first albums were atrocious to me, but they improved a lot in their following works and became one of the most interesting prog metal bands today.
Great psychodelic rock music, with a lot of influences like electronic music and Asian folklore.
An interesting prog-metal opera project, because of the creativity of their mastermind, the great Arjen Lucassen
