There's still debate about who directed The Thing From Another World, Christian Nyby (listed as the director) or Howard Hawks (listed as producer). I like to think that Nyby directed it, but he took his marching orders from the Shadow King (Hawks). As many have said and I'm repeating, Hawks' fingerprints (boy's club, overlapping dialogue, etc...) were all over the film. Regardless of who directed ... read more

Wonderfully kitsch piece of Cold War paranoia in which a team of American scientists dig up an alien being from the North Pole only to be terrorised by it once it defrosts. Famously the inspiration for John Carpenter’s The Thing, there is little to compare between the two aside from the concept and setting.

In this film the alien is rather interestingly revealed to be plant-based,... read more

1001 Movies ... my own version (1950's) (99 movies items)

" Notes: Back then, they didn’t have monstrous budget (as a matter of fact, it was made with only 40,000 dollars) and they didn’t have such complex special effects or CGI like nowadays. In those days, it was all about the characters and what they were going through. Basically, there were 3 group of characters : the military, the scientists and the press (solely represented by Scotty). Each group had their own reaction towards the ‘thing’ and it was pretty interesting to see them discuss "

Slant's 100 Best Sci-Fi Movies of All Time (100 movies items)

"Legend has it that The Thing from Another World was helmed not by its credited director, Christian Nyby, but by producer Howard Hawks. The film certainly provides ample evidence to suggest that such a covert switch occurred, as the its controlled atmosphere of dread and abundant rapid-fire repartee between the primary players seem to have been molded according to Hawks’s trademark template. Regardless, what remains most remarkable about the film is its continued ability to function as both a t"

Slant’s 100 Greatest Horror Films – 2018 Edition (100 movies items)

"Though Howard Hawks’s frequent editor Christian Nyby received the directing credit, some historians believe Hawks actually directed large portions of The Thing from Another World—but maybe Nyby simply learned everything he knew from the master. After all, the film is in the mold of Only Angels Have Wings: a tight ensemble of flyboys and others rapidly firing off overlapping dialogue, providing wit and romance in between the action—here, the fallout from the discovery beneath a sheet of arc"

"Classic sci-fi from Howard Hawkes as a team of scientists discover a giant spacecraft frozen in the Antartica, only for them to release the creature who starts to kill the crew one by one. This low-budget sci-fi still has plenty of creepy moments and fans of John Carpenter's remake will enjoy the similarities and yet enjoy it for how terrific this is. James Arness makes for a great alien."

"The original, while great, was not able to live up to the story from which it was derived. the 1982 sequel "The Thing" made up for its shortcomings and then some."
