There's still debate about who directed The Thing From Another World, Christian Nyby (listed as the director) or Howard Hawks (listed as producer). I like to think that Nyby directed it, but he took his marching orders from the Shadow King (Hawks). As many have said and I'm repeating, Hawks' fingerprints (boy's club, overlapping dialogue, etc...) were all over the film. Regardless of who directed ... read more

Wonderfully kitsch piece of Cold War paranoia in which a team of American scientists dig up an alien being from the North Pole only to be terrorised by it once it defrosts. Famously the inspiration for John Carpenter’s The Thing, there is little to compare between the two aside from the concept and setting.

In this film the alien is rather interestingly revealed to be plant-based,... read more

1001 Movies ... my own version (1950's) (95 movies items)

" Notes: Back then, they didn’t have monstrous budget (as a matter of fact, it was made with only 40,000 dollars) and they didn’t have such complex special effects or CGI like nowadays. In those days, it was all about the characters and what they were going through. Basically, there were 3 group of characters : the military, the scientists and the press (solely represented by Scotty). Each group had their own reaction towards the ‘thing’ and it was pretty interesting to see them discuss "
