"You're gonna need a bigger boat." Though decades have passed since it first entered theatres in 1975, Steven Spielberg's Jaws still assuredly holds its position as one of the greatest thrillers of all time, and remains an important cinematic artefact. Central to the film's brilliance is the riveting suspense, the colourful cast of characters, the humour, the terrific dialogue, the unforgettable s... read more

Today Great White Sharks are on the endangered species list. We now know that even the humble toaster in your kitchen is far more dangerous to mankind than these wondrous creatures, which have changed so little since prehistoric times. But in 1975 the world was a different place and for anyone watching this movie the sea quickly became a fearful place with sharks the hidden killer of the deep. read more

When a young woman is killed by a shark while skinny-dipping near the New England tourist town of Amity Island, police chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) wants to close the beaches, but mayor Larry Vaughn (Murray Hamilton) overrules him, fearing that the loss of tourist revenue will cripple the town. Ichthyologist Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and grizzled ship captain Quint (Robert Shaw) offer to help Brody capture the killer beast, and the trio engage in an epic battle of man vs. nature.

"“Nobody taps into human feelings better than Steven Spielberg…. One of the scenes that is so quintessentially him is…where Roy Scheider and his son start imitating each other…. It’s a familial, human behavior that’ so heartstring-pulling but so unmanipulative.” -Drew Barrymore “It’s the perfect summer movie. It’s fun to watch, exciting, entertaining, full of shockers, full of suspense, a lot of laughs…. Richard Dreyfuss is wonderful kind of everyman, and I don’t think h"

"I will never forget watching this at the movie theater, when I was ten. I was scared but also excited. It was scary and I loved it! I have since, through the years, watched it over 20 times (at least). The first scene set the movie up magnificently for audiences to be scared out of their wits by a great shark. I still have issues with deep bodies of water (I just don't). • The girl being jerked under the water. The leg bouncing from the ocean floor. Quint in the mouth of the shark. • Most w"

Movies...Most Memorable Movie quotes (43 movies items)

"'You're gonna need a bigger boat.'In 1975, "Jaws" made America afraid to go back into the water. Roy Scheider's sea-weary and terrified character Chief Brody makes this statement after seeing Jaws for the first time. Now someone might say it when a bad situation is beyond their ability to handle."

Best Picture Nominees (in Ten Sentences) (478 movies items)

"In the town of Amity, Chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) encounters a barrage of spontaneous shark attacks and is on the urge of closing the beaches for people’s safety. He recruits Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and Bartholomew Quint (Robert Shaw) to hunt down the undersea eating machine once and for all. Hearing everyone talk about how incredibly scary "Jaws" was and its impact on modern cinema, I was expecting a movie somewhat entertaining with a ton of shark attacks and witty dialogue. To m"

1001 Movies ... my own version (1970's) (123 movies items)

" Notes: It is obviously the first masterpiece directed by Steven Spielberg and also a huge milestone in motion picture. We all know the story by now, Spielberg didn't have such a huge budget back then but he still managed to make one of the most thrilling flicks ever made. Indeed, because the budget was so small, the shark really looked cheap and just plain terrible so Steven Spielberg decided to show the beast as least as possible but it turned out to be a blessing. Since then, virtually every"
