"While I usually try to keep only films that were released in movie theaters on these lists 'o' mine, every once in a while I come across a piece of TV cinema that's so good, that for me, it's quality ranks up there with the best of theatrical releases. Duel is a good example of this type of cinematic excellence. Not surprising, considering that it is Steven Spielberg's major film debut (well, at least from my memory it is). And with just the use a big ol' rusted semi-truck, a lone driving Dennis"
" What was it about? A business commuter is pursued and terrorized by a malevolent driver of a massive tractor-trailer. My two cents: What was supposed to be a rather small TV feature became a surprising success, one of the most heralded directing debuts and the start one of the most impressive career in motion picture history. Honestly, the plot was rather thin and you can't say that the characters were very well developped but the directing was just really impressive, especially when you"

“To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this movie. Anyway, this movie was and still is the stuff of legends. Indeed, what was supposed to be a rather small TV feature became a surprising success, one of the most heralded directing debuts and the start one of the most impressive careers in motion picture history. Honestly, in my opinion, the plot was in fact rather thin and you can't say that the characters were very well developed either but the directing was just really impressive. It is even more impressive when you think that it was Spielberg's very directing effort. Back then, he didn't have such a huge budget as nowadays but I think it gave this feature some kind of purity, a simplicity which was sometimes lacking in the movies he made later on in his career. “In any setting, the vast southern California desert alone could pass as a malevolent force. Placed into the hands of an up-and-coming young director named Steven Spielberg, that force morphs into an aging fuel tanker driven by a man Spielberg described as "...a dirty, rotten, no-good son of a bitch! The movie itself, based on a short story, was the product of a network mandate to churn out weekly movies that basically served as time filler during the broadcasted sport off-seasons and handed over to Spielberg almost as a practice exercise for what excellence would come from him in the future. Dennis Weaver, a seasoned everyman actor, made the exercise all that much easier. Quaint and somewhat dated after 50 years (Santa Clarita has basically grown out into the northernmost portions of LA's ” read more

"Re-watch - Oct. 10th After dinner I put Duel on, which I haven't seen since I first caught it at Alamo Drafthouse 10 years ago. I bought it on Blu not long ago, and it looks great. I gave my daughter an introduction before playing it, telling her the tale of how it launched Spielberg's career & made its way from TV in the U.S. to theatres overseas. And it was just as intense the second time around, and she was really into it. It's so well plotted and staged, and Dennis Weaver gives a terrific p"
