Brilliant action thriller
Director John Carpenter is distinguished for classic genre-defining films such as The Thing and Halloween. It's little known that in 1976 Carpenter directed Assault on Precinct 13: this taut, fast-paced, thoroughly riveting low-budget action film. The aptitude of Carpenter's film is the way he cleverly takes inspirat... read more

" Notes: Since I have seen every single major movie directed by John Carpenter except this one, I just had to watch it really bad. Indeed, I finally managed to secure a 2nd hand DVD while vacationing in France but, when I was back home, I discovered that it was actually a French dubbed version with no original version with or without subtitles... "18.7.
“Aside from the slow-paced exposition built during the first thirty minutes, an armed gang and a prison van converge at the titular police precinct, enabling the nail-biting action to unfold at a sustained yet breakneck pace. With grimy indoor and outdoor scenery, suspense-driven interplay and ever-looming threat elevating the dark atmosphere, the film's taut plot resembles the "outnumbered siege" structure of "Rio Bravo" and "Night of the Living Dead", albeit with outgunned vengeful gangs in place of mindless zombies, however, an effective synthesizer score enhances the unsettling mood of the film into near-horror territory.” read more
"John Carpenter's modern western is a masterclass of low-budget thrillers as a deserted police station comes under siege, with a cop, a secretary and two prisoners having to fight to stay alive. Borrowing from Night of the Living Dead and Rio Bravo, this builds the tension nicely with dark humour and brilliant use of light. It also has one of the most notorious scenes, the ice-cream van sequence. Still managing to pull no punches, even after over 40 years."
