Suspiria is like a ride through an amusement park funhouse with candy-colored lights, eerie music, and scares that come out of nowhere. Hitchcock is on tap here as well as Bava, both an obvious influence on Argento. Never has horror been so gorgeous and artistically rendered. The cinematography, set design, and lighting are all oscar-worthy. Yes, the gore is extreme, but balances out evenly with t... read more

A young American dancer travels to Europe to join a famous ballet school. As she arrives, the camera turns to another young woman, who appears to be fleeing from the school. She returns to her apartment where she is gruesomely murdered by a hideous creature. Meanwhile, the young American is trying to settle in at the ballet school, but hears strange noises and is troubled by bizarre occurrences. She eventually discovers that the school is merely a front for a much more sinister organization.

Hated or Divisive Movies That I LOVED (47 movies items)

"Often Hated For: Its weak dialogue, over-dependence on visuals, and razor thin story. Reason I Love It: Suspiria is not so much a film as a descent into an audio-visual nightmare fugue. It's a feeling rather than a strong narrative. It's a hodge-podge of inventive shots, stunning color, dissonant sound, and ghastly grue. In short, it's an experience. "

Bml93's Film Experiences for 2018 (140 movies items)

" You just got to love those visuals. The inventive camera work, the gorgeous color palette and the atmospheric lightening - add to that an amazing musical score and you've got yourself a film that is just pleasing to watch in a haunting, or sort of dream like state. The story is not as layered as its 2018 remake, but it's an atmospheric masterpiece that ought to be felt more than anything else."

Slant’s 100 Greatest Horror Films – 2018 Edition (100 movies items)

"Suspiria is overwhelming in the breadth and intensity of its aesthetic, offering a radical departure from the sporadic surreality of Dario Argento’s prior gialli. The aesthetic weds with the irrational and sketch-like narrative to fashion an abstract horror film that’s more closely aligned with A Page of Madness than with the American slasher genre that arose in the 1970s, partially in response to Argento’s early films. Argento plunges the audience into Suzy’s (Jessica Harper) fragile co"
