A great sci-fi story that doesn't spell everything out. It has a gentle horror feeling throughout, where the antagonist isn't a villain, or even thinking being, perhaps. In fact, no malicious intent, just matter-of-fact is fresh. Weird and enjoyable, I will probably want to go see this one again. 8/10

"Annihilation" is a sci-fi thriller set in a mysteriously altered natural landscape. As such, it's more than a little reminiscent of Andrei Tarkovsky's 1979 classic "Stalker." Both films are striking in their haunting images and conflicting impressions of imminent dread and wondrous discovery. Where they differ is that Stalker focuses on self exploration while Annihilation shines brightest during ... read more

A good movie

Since I really loved 'Ex-Machina', I was really eager to see Alex Garland's 2nd directing effort and it was definitely one of the my highest priorities for 2018. On top of that, it was suddenly available on Netflix which was a really nice surprise. Well, eventually, even though it turned out to be pretty good, I can't say I was really blown away though. The big difference between this movie and 'E... read more

" There where certain parts of this movie that where almost formulaic: any knowledge of traditional ensemble thriller or horror films lets you see the order in which all the characters die and will telegraph their deaths minutes ahead of time. The characters themselves are more a series of tropes thrown together than actual, developed characters. Fortunately the great things about the movie don't rely on those things I mentioned above. The beginning of the movie spends all its time developing N"

" Note: After Ex Machina came out in 2015, I waited for the next movie from Alex Garland and this movie did not let me down. I love how dark, sick, and beautiful this movie was. I love the story in the movie with the idea of an alien forest taking over the planet and causing evolution to take a different path on Earth. This movie was so breath-taking to me, I had to own it on day one when it came out on Blu-Ray."

Top 20 Films of 2018 (20 movies items)

" There are certain stories that just instantly hook me and I can't quite explain why. This is one of those stories. There's a lot that the film talks about: duality, change, depression, loneliness, and what it means when it feels like our bodies are betraying us. But I think what struck me most about the film, was how it shows just how resistant humans are to change. Natalie Portman portrays that perfectly. A lot seem to have problems with her character and I don't get it. This is a woman who h"

Movies Watched In 2018 - To Infinity & Beyond! (365 movies items)

"This is another solid entry in the dark, cerebral sci-fi genre for director Alex Garland. The movie's somber atmosphere and otherworldly visuals are its major strengths. There are some truly striking and memorable images in this movie that manage to be alien, haunting, and disarmingly beautiful, often all at the same time. The plot gets you invested, and it certainly wasn't uninteresting. Even the ambiguity of the movie isn't off-putting, but rather satisfying. The final act of the movie is cert"

I'm probably not watching much this time. (100 movies items)

"12/03/18 Directed by: Alex Garland So just about every technical aspect of the film is dog shit, most notably the colour correction, editing and sound mixing, and its also just boring and badly paced. It improves in the final chapter but even then all the cool stuff is stuff I could get out of music videos. "

" DVD- 1hr. 55min. First Viewing Though it doesn't reach to heights that Garland was able to reach with his directorial debut Ex Machina, Annihilation is a beautiful enigma that poses some heady questions about human nature and it's impact on environment (and vice versa). If there's one major problem with the film, at least to me, it's that Garland doesn't really invest much into character work; while the actors all do exceptional work, they're doing it for inert characters that don't have much h"
