I don't need a trailer to be excited for this one. All I need to know is it's the latest film from Edgar Wright, who is easily one of my favorite writer/directors working right now. I'll be there opening weekend or as close to it as possible if I've got the kiddo when it comes out.
the giraffe's rating:
This is the latest film from Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead, the genius team behind Resolution and Spring. Both those films earned perfect scores from me, so it's no surprise that I'm eagerly awaiting their next film. I'll be watching this ASAP.
UPDATE: The Endless got picked up for distribution as it made the festival rounds in 2017, but will not be released until 2018. Bummed, but at least I know it'll be worth waiting for.

Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)
This should require no explanation. It looks like Marvel will finally do Spidey right, and best of all they're not going to force us to sit through another retelling of Peter Parker's origin. I've watched the trailer a few times now & still get super excited on each occasion. Oh yeah, and the kiddo wants to see it too, so we'll get to go together. July 7th can't get here fast enough.
the giraffe's rating:
Even though I was underwhelmed with Snowpiercer, any Joon-ho Bong film is always going to be highly anticipated by me. It'd be cool to see this in the theatre, but apparently it's going straight to Netflix instead. Then again, Pittsburgh is lacking in dedicated theatres for foreign & indie films, so that may be for the best as it's more likely I'll get to see it. There's no trailer yet, but rest assured I'll be watching it ASAP once it hits Netflix.
the giraffe's rating:
A horror movie from the director of Trollhunter? Say no more.
the giraffe's rating:
The trailer for this has me highly intrigued. Let's hope the story is as impressive as the visuals, as it's tough to get a grasp on what's really going on here.
the giraffe's rating:
Aren't we all excited to hang out with these guys again?
the giraffe's rating:
I'm a fan of Luc Besson and holy crap this looks visually outstanding. OK, so it also calls to mind The Fifth Element to some degree...I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing though.
the giraffe's rating:
James McAvoy is clearly going all out here. It's weird as hell for me to be this excited about a film from M. Night Shyamalan. I don't know that it'll be great, but I have no doubt it'll be worth watching.
the giraffe's rating:
The Lego Batman Movie (2017)
This looks like a lot of fun, plus it's the kiddo's most anticipated film for next year. We'll be catching it ASAP after it comes out.
the giraffe's rating:
Alien: Covenant (2017)
I mean, yeah, I'll go see this. The trailer definitely impresses, so hopefully Ridley Scott's proper return to the world that launched his career will be great. If Prometheus had been a better film I'd be more excited though, and really I'm more intrigued by Neill Blomkamp's idea for a film in the franchise.
the giraffe's rating:
How to Be a Latin Lover (2017)
Y'all know I love the guys from The State, so I try to check out what they do. This looks genuinely funny, and I can't remember the last time a comedy trailer had me laughing multiple times. I'll be seeing this one for sure.
the giraffe's rating:
This looks like it'll be a lot of fun, and Neon is distributing films that I'm interested in so far. Count me in.
the giraffe's rating:
A few years back I fell in love with a little film called Bellflower. That film's writer/director/star is Evan Glodell, who is also starring in this film. If he had written & directed it it might be higher up this list, but the trailer promises some insanity and high-octane action so I'm definitely interested in seeing the rest of it.
I've been a fan of Martin McDonagh's films (In Bruges, Seven Psychopaths) and he's got Sam Rockwell on board again for this film. I'll be there. Oh, and the trailer has me even more on board.
the giraffe's rating:
Mother! (2017)
I'll go see anything Aronofsky does. Some concrete details would be nice though if this wants to move up my list.
the giraffe's rating:
Hell Or High Water was one of my favorite films of 2016. The writer of that film was Taylor Sheridan, and this is his next film which he's also directing. If it's as well-made all around as the previous film then I'll gladly put down money to watch it.
the giraffe's rating:
Ferdinand (2017)
The kiddo & I saw the trailer for this & we're both looking forward to it.
the giraffe's rating:
Stephen Chbosky is directing another film? Looks like there's a great mix of heart & humor in this, so I'm interested for sure.

New Doug Liman is a potentially good thing. This is another film though where I want a trailer before I make up my mind about it.
UPDATED: There's the trailer & it looks like it'll be worth my time despite Cruise trying to maintain a Southern accent.
the giraffe's rating:
Coco (2017)
A new Pixar movie that's not a sequel, and it's looking at Dia de los Muertos? Yep, I'm interested. Until a trailer drops though I'm not sure how much, but definitely more than the other Pixar film coming out this year.
UPDATED: Ok, so this is reminding me a lot of The Book of Life, but it still seems like it'll be worthwhile. The kiddo & I will definitely see it, but whether it'll be able to find its way out of The Book of Life's shadow remains to be seen.
the giraffe's rating:
New Alexander Payne is usually worthwhile, but there's no trailer yet for this so I can make up my mind. And Nebraska was kind of a let down in my book, so I'm reserving my excitement for now.
Dunkirk (2017)
Christopher Nolan and a strong cast make me feel like I should see this one. The fact it's set in WWII which is a subject that's been mined to death makes me not care though. I'll probably give it a chance just to see what I think, but I'm not excited about it.
the giraffe's rating:
So I'm definitely curious to see the director of The Lobster reteam with Colin Farrell, but this is also the director of Dogtooth which I haven't forgiven him for. Could go either way on this one, so hopefully a trailer will help me make up my mind.
the giraffe's rating:
I liked the first film all right, but really don't need a sequel. Matthew Vaughn returning to the director's chair helps me feel a little better about the quality of this one, however, so perhaps I'll give it a chance. Until I see a trailer and/or some positive feedback on it though I'm not getting excited.
UPDATED: It looks like more of the same, so my excitement level isn't much higher I'm afraid. The September release date doesn't help either, as studios tend to dump crap in September so they can spend the rest of the year delivering films for Academy consideration. I'll wait for the feedback/reviews.
the giraffe's rating:
The Lego Ninjago Movie (2017)
At this point I'm willing to sit through any LEGO movie they put out, but the more I watch this trailer my enthusiasm drops. Plus it's set for a September release which is generally not a good sign. The kiddo wants to see it so we'll definitely go, and I'll hope it's better than I'm anticipating.
the giraffe's rating:
Logan (2017)
The trailer isn't selling me on this film at all, though one of the biggest strikes against it is the decision to use Johnny Cash's cover of "hurt". That song is so overused at this point that it grates on my nerves. Let's also keep in mind that Wolverine: Origins was total crap & from most reports the other Wolvie movie was only marginally better. So do we need another one? I'm not so sure, but I understand that the audience for the 2016 Butt-Numb-a-thon got to see 40 minutes of the film and were upset they couldn't finish it. So maybe it'll actually be worthwhile?
the giraffe's rating:
The trailer suggests they're going all out for this film, which is hopefully a good thing. It looks like a better film than the other recent Universal monsters films did. I skipped all of those, however, so there's a good chance I'll sleep on this one too.
Hmm...I mostly enjoy PT Anderson's films (still haven't seen Inherent Vice yet), but I have zero interest in the fashion industry where this will reportedly be set. Thus I'm withholding my excitement until I see a proper trailer.
the giraffe's rating:
A 40 second teaser isn't quite enough to help me make up my mind, but I like what I'm seeing here so far.
the giraffe's rating:
Yeah, yeah, I'll certainly wind up watching this one. I just wish it wasn't already coming out. Some breathing room of more than a year between Star Wars movies would be nice. Of course with their insistence on including the old cast members they have to film these fairly quickly I guess to avoid anyone dying off before they're completed. Too bad they didn't jettison that idea for Force Awakens. But hey, this time we've got Rian Johnson in charge instead of JJ Abrams, so that's hopefully a good sign. I'm especially hoping he focuses more on the newer characters who should be driving these films.
UPDATED: Admittedly the trailer looks pretty damn good. But I'm still not super excited for it.
the giraffe's rating:
Suburbicon (2017)
Directed by George Clooney & he co-wrote the script with the Coen brothers...plus the cast has some excellent actors. So that's enough to get me interested. There's no trailer or release date yet though, so how excited I am is yet to be seen.
the giraffe's rating:
Does Trainspotting need a sequel? Not really in my opinion, though I understand Irvine Welsh did write more books about the characters. The fact that the cast is returning along with Danny Boyle suggests this will be well worth my time, but the trailer isn't really grabbing me for some reason. Hopefully as its release date approaches I'll be more enthusiastic, or else some reviews can encourage me toward it.
the giraffe's rating:
Wonder Woman (2017)
The trailer for this looks like they've done a good job here, though I'm pretty indifferent to the entire DC franchise (which is why you won't find Justice League on my list). Wonder Woman has also never been a favorite of mine. I did watch some episodes of the TV series growing up, but never got into her books. Odds are I'll wind up skipping this just like the rest of the DC films so far, but if the overall feedback is more positive then I could be persuaded to check it out.

I don't need a sequel to a film that's 35 years old. Especially one that I find more overrated as time goes by. I'm sure plenty of people will insist it's worth seeing, but I genuinely do not care.
Despicable Me 3 (2017)
Really? Do we need this? I have no doubt the kiddo will insist on going & I'll wind up taking her, but I really don't need any more films from this world. One was enough, two was a stretch...everything else is overkill.
the giraffe's rating:
Thor: Ragnarok (2017) (2017)
The Thor films are among my least favorite in the MCU, so it's unlikely I'll force myself to sit through another one. I'm sure I can find something better to waste my time on.
the giraffe's rating:
Here are the films I'm excited about which are set to be released in 2017. If it's not here I'm either not interested (and there are many films I'm not interested in coming out this year) or I'm not aware of its existence.
Updated 7/10/2017 - Added a few films that weren't present before & some trailers for the upcoming films already on the list that were previously missing them with new notes as needed.
