Most anticipated films of 2019

Sort by: Showing 42 items
Decade: Rating: List Type:
Of course the new Tarantino tops my list. If you thought anything else would, you just don't know me. I don't need a trailer to tell me this, and I'm doing my damnedest to avoid any details about it as they leak out. I just want it in the theatre so I can watch it.

It's uncertain whether Synchronic will pop up where I can see it in 2019 or 2020, but just in case it does earn a release this year I'm including it. This is the fourth film from Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, which is all that matters to me. Their first three films are all thoughtful and unique, and you'll never hear me say I don't care about a new film from them.

I don't even need to know anything about this other than it's from Laika, my favorite animation studio. I'll be there opening weekend with the kiddo.

Jojo Rabbit (2019)
Taika Waititi has won me over, so yes, I'm seeing this. It can't get here soon enough.

New Joon-ho Bong? And it'll be in Korean? Say no more.

New Rian Johnson? Yes please. I don't need to know anything else, just put it in front of me so I can experience it.

I'm all in on this series, and catching the trailer recently only reinforced my excitement for this film. Here's hoping it makes a ton of money so Michael Dougherty can keep making the films he wants to.

Coming in May
the giraffe's rating:
Joe Cornish directed Attack the Block and is returning with this film. Need I say more? Alright fine. The trailer totally won me over, and my daughter was so excited when she saw it that she was bouncing in her seat. We'll catch this one ASAP.

The MCU can put out a film with literally any character at its center at this point and I'm there. I'm genuinely excited for this one, and have high hopes that their first, long overdue, female-led film will be at least as well-realized as Black Panther or Wonder Woman.

Even if Shyamalan wasn't back in my good graces these days, I wouldn't miss this for anything. Thankfully I won't have to wait long to see it either.

I don't need to explain this one, right? Go on Marvel, just take all my money. You've got me.

Us
We should all be excited for the new Jordan Peele movie. I haven't even seen the trailer, and I can guarantee I'll be there when it comes out. Hopefully he follows up on the promise of Get Out, and if he does he'll ensure I keep coming back for each new thing he does.

Of course I'm seeing the new Linklater film. I can think of no reason not to. The only thing that might happen is my seeing it being delayed if no theatres here pick it up. Hopefully that's not an issue.

Another one I shouldn't have to explain.

Coming in September

More Tom Holland Spidey? I'm there. So's the kiddo. This does not require discussion.

Coming in July
the giraffe's rating:
Look, I'm already invested in this series, and so's my daughter, and thus we'll both be there opening weekend. Should I be concerned though that it's dropping in February which is typically when studios dump their worst films? Hopefully not.

Coming in February
the giraffe's rating:
Of course I'm seeing this, though I'd be more excited if it had a more interesting director behind it. Hopefully JJ follows Rian Johnson's footsteps and delivers a higher quality of film than Force Awakens.

Brightburn (2019)
I'm curious about this film, which is apparently a sci-fi/horror version of Superman and James Gunn is producing it. Waiting for a trailer before I confirm how excited I actually am for it.

*EDITED Jan. 9th* Saw the trailer thanks to aLittleTyger, and I'm now officially excited (technically just part of the trailer, but it sold me pretty quickly). Go check that out, it's linked to in the comments below.

I loved The VVitch, so I'm definitely interested in this film from Robert Eggers. Throw in Willem Dafoe and I'm guaranteed to show up.

Our own PvtCaboose91 is responsible for this one, and from what I've seen I'm very excited for it. He's grown as a filmmaker from one project to the next, and unlike his previous films it's going to be feature-length. It should arrive some time this year, and I'm sure he can tell you when before I'll be able to. For now there's a trailer on its Listal page if you're curious.
the giraffe's rating:
Unsure if the present title above (Scary Stories: A Documentary, for the record in case it gets modified) is accurate, as it's supposed to be Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark based off the book series. André Øvredal is directing (Trollhunter, Autopsy of Jane Doe) and that's reason enough for me to be on board for it. Guillermo del Toro also contributed to the screenplay though, which further amps up my interest.

Coming in August

The February release date is concerning. But it doesn't matter, because most of the same cast and crew are returning for this sequel which is a good sign. I'll definitely see it and just to be safe maybe I'll keep my expectations low.

Shazam! (2019)
I wasn't sure about this one at first, but the trailer won me over. I'll definitely check it out.

Coming in April
the giraffe's rating:
Of course I'd return for another Zombieland film, especially one that reunites the cast and director. Time will tell whether it lives up to the first film, but as long as it's as much fun as the original I'll probably be fine with it.

Under the Silver Lake was supposed to be released last year, but it's been quietly pushed back a couple times now. Supposedly that's a decision A24 made to give it a better chance at finding an audience, but hopefully it's not a sign that it won't be worth waiting for. Mitchell's last film It Follows was quite impressive, so I'm curious to see what he's created here.

I have mixed feelings about this, but I'm hopeful it will be done well. At least they're not attempting a live-action film again, as the two that exist are perfect.

Dark Phoenix (2019)
Look, I figure this can go one of two ways. Either it's worth sitting through or it's a trainwreck. I'm hopeful for the former, but given the failures of Apocalypse and the fact that all other mutant films have been pushed back farther and farther down the calendar, there's enough evidence to suggest it'll be the latter.

My daughter has no interest in the live-action remakes Disney wants to force upon us (and I feel the same), but this is the rare exception for her. My inner child keeps hoping Tim Burton can deliver some magic into the world again, and the trailers for this one show some potential. I'll be seeing it for her sake, and with any luck I'll walk away satisfied.

The Kid (2019)
A film about a boy who witnesses the meeting between Billy the Kid and Pat Garrett sounds interesting, and these days I'm tempted toward Westerns. The cast is pretty impressive too. I'm not super excited about it now, but a trailer could change that.

Coming in May

I really enjoyed Mudbound, so since this is Dee Rees's next film I'm curious about it. As more details emerge it may move up this list.
OK, so the trailers for this are not impressing me at all. And it's dropping in February which isn't a good sign. All signs point to this being an epic fail on the level of Ninjago. But I can't talk my daughter out of it, so I'll be sitting through it regardless. I don't promise I'll enjoy it though.

Coming in February

The fact that this was pushed back a year so it could be reworked is not a good sign at all. Supposedly it'll be released this year finally, and while I'm still curious about this film being more of a horror movie than a straightforward superhero jam, I'm reserving my excitement. I may even hold off until I start seeing some feedback about it before making up my mind.

Pet Sematary (2019)
I don't really think we needed another version of Pet Sematary, but since it's from the team that gave us Starry Eyes I'll give it a chance.

Toy Story 4 (2019)
I've got mixed feelings on this one. I don't see any need whatsoever for another entry in this series as the third film perfectly ended it. And yet here we are, and I suspect that even if I wanted to opt out of seeing it the kiddo will insist we see it. Sigh.

Good Time was a very interesting film, so I'm curious to see what the Safdie brothers come up with next. Evidently Adam Sandler will be in this one, no doubt giving one of his rare performances that proves he's a better actor than we generally give him credit for. I'll most likely see it, though how quickly is yet to be determined.

The animation in this looks stellar, and my daughter is really excited for it so we'll definitely check it out. I don't expect it to be great, but we'll see.

As a long-time fan of Danny Boyle, I'm always going to be interested in what he does. Waiting for more details on this one to emerge, however, before I decide just how excited I am for it.

I'm often on board for a Robert Rodriguez joint, but holy crap does this look terrible. The CG is astoundingly awful-looking in the trailers, and there's nothing about this film that generates my interest. Add to that a release date in February, and you're guaranteed an ill-advised trainwreck I'll gladly avoid.

Hellboy (2019)
Do we need a reboot for Hellboy? And no del Toro? Sorry, I'm not sold on this one. Course I didn't think del Toro's films would be worthwhile either and was proved wrong, so perhaps there's hope for this one. For now though I pretty much don't care and the trailer didn't help either (it looks well-made but I'm not feeling it at all).

Coming in April

OK, so you probably wouldn't think I'd be excited for this. And you're probably right. I mean, I'm not a Pokemon guy so this has no appeal for me. However, my daughter saw the trailer and freaked out about it, so I may wind up having to take her regardless. Maybe I can talk her mom into biting that bullet for me?

Coming in May
the giraffe's rating:
I know, I know. I sat through the first film in this series and when it ended I was like, that's it? This is the film everyone's freaking out about? Really? It had moments, but nothing that really made me love it, much less made me excited about the prospect of it being turned into a franchise. So unless something odd happens and I actually sit through AND enjoy the second chapter I won't even give this a look.

OK, so first off 2019 is going to be a huge year movie-wise. There's a ton of movies coming out to be excited about, which makes this one of the longest anticipated lists I've had to come up with. And like every year there are plenty of films that haven't been announced yet which may generate as much excitement as the films I'm able to include at the start of the year. That's fine, though, as I can always return to update the list as needed.

I'm not including any trailers this year, for three very good reasons. 1. They cause the list to load slowly, and sometimes they stop working or disappear entirely. 2. I don't want to feel obligated to return to this list to add more trailers as they're released. 3. I'm finding that more and more I'd rather go into a movie without seeing a trailer at all so my expectations are not misplaced.
