The Exorcist (1973)
Who hasn't seen or at least heard of William Peter Blatty's The Exorcist? This is the type of horror movie that paves the way for the whole genre.
Poltergeist (1982)
Poltergeist is about a family being attacked by "noisy ghosts" and was wildly successful. It prompted 2 sequels, and though I think Poltergeist 2 is creepier than the first, this is the movie that started it all.
Cube (1998)
Odd little Canadian film which seemed to predate the wide-spread "cube" fascination now seen in our culture, and also had elements of the "Saw" movies in it... long before Saw was made.
The Fly (1986)
Classic horror sci fi. This one kind of bores me, but it is a horror classic and has earned its rightful spot on this list.
These are sorts of the basics, including the "lesser known" basics. Some of them I didn't enjoy as much as the hype should suggested I should have, but all of these were important to the horror genre in different ways.
