Ser Brynden Tully, or the Blackfish, is the younger brother of Hoster Tully, the head of House Tully. Brynden is a respected knight and the uncle of Catelyn Stark, Edmure Tully and Lysa Arryn.

Edmure Tully, the son of the late Lord Hoster Tully and younger brother of Catelyn Stark and Lysa Arryn. He is the new head of House Tully and Lord of Riverrun and the Riverlands.

Olenna Tyrell, née Redwyne, the matriarch of House Tyrell. She is Loras and Margaery Tyrell's grandmother.

Beric Dondarrion, the Lord of Blackhaven and the head of House Dondarrion, a vassal house to House Baratheon. He became the leader of the Brotherhood Without Banners after he was sent out to the Riverlands by Eddard Stark to bring the king's justice to Ser Gregor Clegane.

Thoros of Myr, a red priest of the Lord of Light from the Free City of Myr, and a member of the court at King's Landing. He later becomes an influential member of the Brotherhood Without Banners.

Anguy, a skilled archer hailing from the Stormlands and a member of the Brotherhood Without Banners.

Locke, a man-at-arms sworn to House Bolton, is sent in pursuit of Jaime Lannister after the Kingslayer is freed from Northern captivity by Catelyn Stark

Selyse Baratheon, née Florent, the wife of Stannis Baratheon, the Lord of Dragonstone and claimant to the Iron Throne. They have a daughter, Princess Shireen Baratheon.

Shireen Baratheon, the only daughter of Stannis Baratheon and Selyse Florent, and Stannis' only heir. She was left disfigured on the left side of her face after contracting the disease Greyscale as an infant.

Grey Worm, the commander of the Unsullied, the warrior-eunuchs of Astapor whose reputation for combat is without equal.

Daario Naharis, a Tyroshi sellsword and one of the three leaders of the mercenary company known as the Stormcrows, who are active in the Slaver's Bay region of Essos.

Prendahl na Ghezn, is sellsword of Ghiscari descent and serves as the commander of the Stormcrows under the lieutenant Daario Naharis.

Mero, a Braavosi sellsword known as "The Titan's Bastard" in reference to the colossal statue that stands astride the entrance to the harbor of Braavos. He is the captain of the Second Sons mercenary company.

Lothar Frey, referred to as "Lame Lothar", on account of his crippled leg, and serves as the Steward of the Twins. He is the twelfth son of Lord Walder Frey, the first from his marriage to his fourth wife, Lady Alyssa Blackwood.

Roslin Frey, the fifth daughter of Lord Walder Frey, Lord of the Crossing and head of House Frey.

(Black) Walder Frey, the great-grandson of his namesake Lord Walder Frey, Lord of the Crossing and head of House Frey.
