Escape from L.A. (1996)
A terrible sequel to the great Escape from New York. This film should never have been made.
Don't let it affect your judgement of Escape From New York though as it is a real classic of dystopian cinema.

3rd Viewing. An engaging drama from Spike Lee, with solid performances from Harvey Keitel and Mekhi Phifer.

Cat Chaser (1989)
I'm a huge fan of Abel Ferrara's work, but Cat Chaser is an absolutely terrible film. It doesn't really display any of the traits that make Ferrara's films so unique. It's plot is trite and predictable, the performances are flat and unconvincing. I find it very difficult to understand how he made the transition from this film to King of New York and Bad Lieutenant, two exceptionally made, provocative films. In short, Cat Chaser resembles nothing more than an indistinguishable TV movie, which for me is by far Ferrara's worst effort.

Sorcerer (1977)
An exceptional film from William Friedkin, utterly gripping from the opening scene right until the end. Spectacular visuals and another memorable score from Tangerine Dream.
Brilliant!!
Can't wait to catch this on the big screen when it's rereleased next year and for the Blu ray release!

I have little positive to say about this film and to be honest I would rather refrain from writing anything lengthy to express how weak it is. The lead characters are far too uninteresting to care about, and their performances lack quality. The cliched, cheesy one-liners are so cringe-worthy that I was close to switching it off: "I have orgasms, he has wargasms!". The dialogue is poorly written at times and the plot is dull. Apart from Blake Lively looking very pretty, this film offers very little else. Surprising, coming from Oliver Stone.

McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971)
McCabe & Mrs.Miller is an unforgettable masterpiece. It is beautifully photographed by Vilmos Zsigmond. The graininess of the images effectively transport the viewer to this particular period in American history. The story is told with such subtlety and at the same time it conveys so much depth beneath the surface. Hilarious at times and also melancholic. Great lead performances from Warren Beatty and Julie Christie. A poetic Western and love-story and a landmark of American cinema.
I'm looking forward to watching a lot more of Robert Altman!

Robert Altman's 3 Women is a masterpiece. It's images are incredibly hypnotic and affective, and the performances of Sissy Spacek and Shelley Duvall are astonishing. It has strains of Ingmar Bergman's Persona (1966) and David Lynch's Mulholland Drive (2001), and there is clearly a deep artistic connection between these three films.

2nd viewing. An absolute masterpiece from Michael Cimino. Subtle, understated performances from Walken and De Niro. Completely gripping throughout, it also captures so much emotion and pain by simply showing the characters' expressions or the haunting beauty of the Pennsylvania landscape. Another beautiful piece of cinematography from Vilmos Zsigmond.

Django Unchained is probably one of Tarantino's best films. Dicaprio and Waltz deliver brilliant, nuanced performances, helping to effortlessly shift the film's mood back and forth from the comedic to the intensely dramatic. It displays some beautiful cinematography. At nearly two and a half hours, the film doesn't lag. It's pacing is strong and the characters are genuinely interesting. Although it occasionally breaks into the obligatory messy, over-the-top, fully fledged Tarantino mode where the protagonist becomes invincible, it also shows an interesting development in Tarantino's style. His maturity as a director is on display throughout, particularly in terms of the visuals and the way tension accumulates in scenes.

Wes Anderson makes very pretty looking pictures. Each frame is precisely composed and contains a lot of revealing details. The cinematography is ordinarily very static and exact and the characters are most often eloquent, emotionally troubled individuals. I can see why people find his films charming, but they are not to my taste. I don't really get anything from his films, with the exception of The Royal Tenenbaums.

Lincoln (2012)
Linclon bored me to tears.
Yes, Daniel Day-Lewis is an exceptional actor. But the subject matter of this film is so dull. This Spielberg film is clearly tailor made for those conservative folk at the American Academy. It's very interesting that Lincoln came out at theatres around the same time as Django Unchained. At least Tarantino had the guts to use his imagination to explore the issue of slavery.
Long live cinema that celebrates artistic merit. It's not as if the world needs any more Biopics. They're boring as hell!!

Ordet (1955)
Ordet is absolutely amazing. The combination of great camera work and exceptional performances give the film a real intensity. Whilst being very restrained in all aspects of its narrative, characterisation, visual compositions and structure, it attains an incredibly hypnotic and haunting style. Its images convey so much emotion in the characters by allowing their expressions to work in tandem with masterful compositions and lighting. A truly memorable work that will continue to resonate long after its seen.

Kagemusha looks absolutely beautiful. It is a very quiet and patient film, and it builds up slowly to the climatic battle. Although there are battle sequences, more prominence is given to its calm atmosphere and beautiful visuals. The most striking scene in the film is the dream sequence where the lord's double encounters the lord himself, or rather his ghost, amid a rainbow of lucid multi-coloured clouds. My impression is that the film will become even more impressive upon repeated viewings.

This film blew me away with its uncompromising style and singular use of colour and set design. Michael Gambon is terrifying in the lead role, while Helen Mirren's performance is subtle and relies on her expressions and sheer physicality.
The soundtrack is very powerful. It works perfectly with the film's images and its general structure, and towards the end of the film it acquires a great deal of emotional weight.
Anyone who is looking for a film that is truly unique, but at the same time, is a great piece of filmmaking should consider The Cook, the thief, his wife, and her lover. An unforgettable film!

The Conversation (1974)
2nd viewing.
Watched on Blu ray on March 1st.
The picture and audio quality are superb on this blu ray release.
The film itself is incredibly atmospheric, and after a second viewing it is actually even more impressive. The cinematography is beautiful, very carefully constructed and full of great touches and subtleties. The score is very affecting and hypnotic, and it becomes essential to film's overall mood and its lonely protagonist (played to perfection by Gene Hackman).
Winner of the P'alme d'Or in 1974.
