I highly recommend Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. If you haven't seen it yet, all I can say is that if you like serial-style movies, or Max Fleischer cartoons (the old superman cartoons), or movies set in a Pre-world war II era, go see it. Or even if you like Gwenyth Paltrow or Jude Law. That's all I can say without spoiling anything.

This movie is amazing. Angelina was ... read more

Back in 2004, there was not one but for 4 movies released which were entirely shot against blue screens. I have seen all of them : ‘Immortal (Ad Vitam)’, ‘ Casshern’ , ‘Sin City’ and this movie. Even though 10 years later, this process doesn’t sound really impressive, I thought it was quite fascinating back in those days and I watched all of them. Eventually, except for ‘Sin City... read more

The correct title for the film should be Sky Captain & the World of where lipstick never runs out, heroes are heroes, villains are dead and where 1 minute equals to 5. Anyway, visual-wise it is impressive. It is set in an imaginary 1939 and has a pulpy feel to it. Sky Captain is a retro-future film, so that means a lot of CGI and Blue Screen was put into it, and while some age correctly, even impr... read more

The future kind of sucks. (430 movies items)

"Reason for the future sucking: Super robots arrive, creating destruction everywhere, and scientists are also disappearing, for seemingly no reason at all. Year it takes place: Alternate year, 1939. "

Fun, entertaining and visually outstanding

“A pulpy, visually striking throwback to classic Hollywood adventure pictures, 2004's Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow is a fascinating forgotten gem that deserves reappraisal and rediscovery. Taking its cues from comic books, Indiana Jones, science fiction serials and many more, Sky Captain is an undeniable case of style over substance, but the style is so impressive and aesthetically pleasing that it hardly matters. Written and directed by first-time filmmaker Kerry Conran, the picture has an intriguing premise and appealing (though one-dimensional) characters. However, the visual stylings take priority here, resulting in an altogether unique big-screen experience that miraculously holds up two decades later but does not resonate as deeply as it should.

An intrepid reporter” read more

" First Viewing Viewing Date: March 25th Via: Apple TV Plot: After New York City receives a series of attacks from giant flying robots, a reporter teams up with a pilot in search of their origin, as well as the reason for the disappearances of famous scientists around the world. Rating: 7.1/10 Why Did I Watch It? I wanted to watch this when it first came out, but it somehow eluded me. When it was cheap on Apple TV, I jumped on it and made it a priority."

300 & 99 From The 1st Decade Of The New Millennium (399 movies items)

"The classic sci-fi serials of the 30's and 40's are bought back to life on the silver screen, but presented here as full length feature extravaganza. And despite it's homage-like center, this dieselpunk production is filmed with the advanced digital technology of today. Sharp, crisp, clear generated artifically visuals provide the reality of Sky Captain, and builds a world of tomorrow that would make even more experienced captains of the sky, like Flash Gordon or Buck Rogers, go "Wow". " Painful to sit through. Where the actors are bored making this film as I was watching it? It wasn't a bad idea, I love the alternate history steampunky vibes. There where some parts that would have even been fun. But it was like Gwyneth Paltrow was doing line readings instead of actually acting. Others where a little more animated, but with such a low bar does that even count for anything? It was a drag and it made the 1hr 45m runtime feel like three hours."
